(El Monte) – Arroyo showed no signs of rust after the Spring Break, jumping on Gabrielino in the third inning for three runs enroute to a 4-0 Mission Valley League win on Monday.
Jasmin Martinez went 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs for the Lady Knights before leaving the game with an undisclosed injury.
After a scoreless first inning, Arroyo broke open the game in the second after Jaclyn Wagner reached second on a throwing error with no-outs. Natalie Mota moved Wagner to third with a nice sacrifice bunt. Wagner scored on a grounder by Audrey Serna to give the Lady Knights a 1-0 lead with one out.
Kianna Torres and Vivian Cassanova each reached safely before Martinez drove a 3-1 pitch to left-center field to score Torres and Cassanova.
The Eagles may look back on its base running errors early in the game that would have changed the complexion of the game.
Wagner looked shaky early through three innings before getting into a groove the final four innings by striking out seven of twelve outs. She finished the game striking out ten.
Gabrielino’s Melissa Ledesma hit a rocket to center field that netted her a triple. With Jaime Martinez at the plate, Ledesma was caught leaning toward home. Arroyo catcher Felicia Gonzalez threw a perfect strike to Serna to gun down Ledesma.
The Lady Knights dodged another bullet in the fourth after Eagle leftfielder Breanna Delgado attempted to stretch a double into a triple only to get thrown out after a perfect relay throw from Lorena Holguera.
Paige Medina added an insurance run for Arroyo with a home run to right-centerfield in the fifth inning.
With one game remaining in the first go-around of the Mission Valley League, the Lady Knights have managed to put some distance between them and Rosemead, Gabrielino and South El Monte who are tied for second at 3-2.
