Game Night Mid-Valley Division: Week Two

Darryl Thomas takes his Colts into El Monte

All game times are 7:00 PM unless otherwise indicated

Thursday September 15

Rowland (1-1) at Rosemead (0-1)

Last Year: Rowland 48-14

Rosemead needs to get it going offensively. Last week the Panthers managed just three field goals in a loss to Montebello. Rowland opened with a win but was humbled last week by Cal.

If the Panthers can do anything on offense, the defense can provide a way to win. It looks like a rebuilding year for Craig Snyder and the Raiders.

Rosemead 17 Rowland 14

Alhambra (2-0) at Temple City (0-1)

Last Year: Alhambra 20-14

All-Time: Temple City 12-7

The bloggers are blowing up the Moors. Some think we have them too high, one guy thought we have them too low. I think we have them just right. They have an efficient quarterback in Josh Mendoza and a solid runner in Ezra Broadus. Chris Caraveo anchors a sold defense.

Temple City’s O-line did a good job last week. The Rams’ problem was they just couldn’t stop Steven Rivera. Given time quarterback Mikal Quintanilla and TC will be fine.

Moors should be at least a touchdown better.

Alhambra 24 Temple City 14

Friday September 16

Montebello (2-0) at Arroyo (2-0)

Last Year: Arroyo 12-8

11-16-2001: Montebello 27-14 – CIF Playoffs First Round

It’s another Mission Valley League opponent for Montebello. The Oilers started off well last week with a 20-9 win over Rosemead. Matt Saenz led the way with 10 of 14 completions.

Rosemead didn’t score a touchdown. Arroyo quarterback Steven Rivera threw for six last week. Montebello will have a hard time finding an answer.

Arroyo 31 Montebello 14

Covina (1-1) at El Monte (1-1)

Last Year: Covina 31-0

2009: Covina 13-0

The Lions haven’t scored in two years against Covina. The good news is the offense behind Brandon Martinez has been proficient this year. El Monte put up 43 two weeks ago on Baldwin Park and scored 21 last week in a loss to La Puente.

Covina took out its frustrations last week on Gladstone. Gevontray Ainsworth, Billy Livingston and Vinny Venegas were in a groove.

The Lions will score but they won’t win.

Covina 34 El Monte 13

Sierra Vista (0-1) at Mt. View (1-1)

Last Year: Sierra Vista 10-7

The Dons and Giovanni Rivera were stopped cold last week by Salesian. Mt. View got off the floor with a win over Bassett. Last year Rivera ran wild in a close win over the Vikes. That will be the Mt. View’s main objective all night- shut down Giovanni.

It could come down to the wire again. Rivera will get his yards but the Vikes need to at least contain him to keep it close. Ignacio Casteneda is running well for the View. Sierra Vista wins in the fourth.

Sierra Vista 14 Mt. View 10

Monrovia (1-0) at Arcadia (0-1)

Last Year: Monrovia 37-7

2009: Monrovia 27-13

This is the game of the week. The best team in the Mid-Valley squares off with one of the top five teams in the Southeast. Monrovia trailed early but turned it on in the second half to beat Glendora. Arcadia led early but lost it late to St. Frank’s.

There’s a lot of matchups here – The Arcadia O-Line vs. Ellis McCarthy, Taylor Lagace vs. Anthony Craft/ Monrovia secondary and fourth year Coach Ryan Maddox matching wits with the experienced Jon Dimalante.

Arcadia has the heart, I just don’t know if they have the speed. They have the guts, I just don’t know if they have the strength. Monrovia has it all. Note to Apaches: get the ball to Lagace early and often. But it still might not be enough.

Monrovia 27 Arcadia 20

La Salle (0-2) at San Marino (0-1)

Last Year: San Marino 48-6

2009: San Marino 35-13

San Marino raised some eyebrows in week one with a rout of Eagle Rock. La Salle has played two solid Mid-Valley opponents but came away empty both times.

A healthy Kwame Do is rolling for the Titans. Rachel Albright is having a kick of the Lancers. Titans get their second win.

San Marino 24 La Salle 17

San Dimas (1-1) at San Gabriel (1-1)

First Meeting

The Saints were back in the groove last week in a rout of Azusa. Despite the Zero Week loss to Bonita, everybody knew the Saints would get it going -too much talent and good coaching not to.

Eric Alvarez is back behind center for San Gabriel and it worked last week in a win over South Pas. Will it work against a tougher, stronger San Dimas D?

Also can San Gabriel’s offense stop Shawn Kennedy and the high powered Saint offense?

Both teams can score. The stat keepers will get a workout. San Dimas will score more.

San Dimas 35 San Gabriel 28

Azusa (0-1) at Maranatha (2-0)

Interesting match up here. Maranatha is a rising star in the Mid-Valley with a very talented quarterback in Andrew Elffers. Azusa has owned the Montview the last few years but needs to get over the hump come playoff time.

Azusa looked vulnerable last week in a loss to San Dimas. Elffers had a rough night despite a win over La Salle.

These two could meet again in the playoffs. Maranatha wins the first one.

Maranatha 28 Azusa 17

Los Altos (2-0) at Wilson (0-2) – The Wheel

Last Year: Wilson 33-10

The bitter rivalry continues as these two teams battle for “The Wheel.” When the season started most people thought it would be Los Altos that was seeking its first win and not the other way around. The Conquerors are undefeated while Wilson is still on the outside looking in.

It was a struggle last year for both teams and they both have new head coaches trying to kick start things.

Wilson has the talent. It’s just a matter of putting it all together. Los Altos is beginning the first game of a tough three game stretch. Wildcats get it done.

Wilson 21 Los Altos 14

Quick Hits

Friday September 16

Whittier Christian (1-1) at Kern Valley (1-0) – Whittier Christian

South El Monte (1-0) at Workman (1-0) – (La Puente) – South El Monte

La Canada (0-1) at Glendale (1-0) – La Canada

Hoover (0-1) at South Pasadena (0-1) – South Pasadena

Schurr (0-1) at Downey (0-2) – Downey

Bell Gardens (0-1) at El Rancho (1-1) – Bell Gardens

Gladstone (0-1) at Bosco Tech (2-0) – Bosco Tech

La Puente (1-0) at Northview (0-2) (Covina District Field) – La Puente

Cantwell (1-0) at Baldwin Park (0-2) – Cantwell

I watched film on this Pomona team and the SGV has a very rude awaking when this team gets into league play. Take notes, Anthony scheduled all of his non-league games against inland empire teams, why is that? That Chino team that Pomona just beat is very good, way better than any VVL team. Pomona didn’t just beat Chino they dominated that game, the score is misleading. Monrovia has competition and it isn’t Covina?

The truth is many of us don’t like Pomona. The fact that their fans are pretty open about the recruitment of their players is a big reason why they are not respected. It’s why other teams that are not as good, but have done it with neighborhood kids are currently ranked ahead. Is Pomona a viable team? Yes. Are they better than Arroyo? Yes, but does anyone respect what they are in comparison to what has been created at Arroyo? No. People do not respect shortcuts, even if they win.

    Tim,

My point based on your comment, where would you rate Chino in the mid-valley. I have come to the realization that Pomona is on the outside looking in, it really doesn’t matter we control our own destiny.

To put Pomona below La Puente is a Joke and I stand by that comment. Do you think La Puente can compete with Damien or Diamond Ranch, we all know the answer to that question don’t we. Based on scores we would be ranked higher than both those teams.

Like I said what every, its not about earned, some of the teams above Pomona how did they earn their spots? By beating weak a@@ teams, so what ever. I’m done here Tim and the rest of you are clueless.

Two games into the season and Pomona is acting like they already won CIF, please its too early in the season to start claiming anything. Have you even seen Arroyo? Please they can play with just about any team around and that quarterback is the real deal. I would like to see Pomona do good because I really do not care for teams like San Dimas

Just as a rule of thumb for all of the Pomona fans. Getting respect doesn’t come easy especially in the SGV. Monrovia has had to take its lumps for years playing in the shadows of Muir, Arcadia, and even TC at times. But as the years roll on the Cats have made themselves an undeniable contender not only in the RHL but the CIF as well. Even in 2007 when we lost 5 all CIF players to Charter Oaks and they benefited to go on and win 2 championship rings and the kids at Monrovia had to endure more ridicule about never being the team that would ever reach the top of that CIF mountain the kids on the other hand didn’t believe that to be the case and in the years following went on to become one of the premiere programs in the San Gabriel Valley and now hoping to become one of the premiere programs in the state. I believe what most of these fans are saying is that until you earn that respect it wont just be handed over in any form or fashion. Monrovia is a prime example of a team that has earned the respect of its rivals along with schools that they have never played. So good luck Pomona, let your team prove to everyone that they are as good as you and your fans think of them and then you wont have to come to the blog rescue every 5 minutes to try and prove your point with a keypad!

That would be stupidest “response” not respond. When you’re talking about somebody’s previous comment it is a response. When you are then answering that said comment it means you are responding and you are going to “respond.” When you say stupidest about someone else and then look stupid in the same sentence it makes you look….well…stupid. It’s basic English junior.

That was the stupidest respond I got this year. First off I’m not the one that made that comment you were. I’m not stupid enough to make a comment like that. I have seen some of those teams play and believe we can play with them. I will take that one step further I don’t think Arroyo can play with Monrovia, Covina, and Pomona. I’m basing that comment on seeing all those teams play except Monrovia.

That’s the difference between me and you I will give my opinion on what I have seen. You still haven’t told us what you base your opinion on. We all know you haven’t seen Pomona.
    We are still waiting…….

Watched the show last night, I’m going to address only one comment. “I know for sure Pomona can’t beat my top six”.

My question to you is how do you know that we can’t?

I have asked this question before and you didn’t answer it. You have no idea what talent is on this team since you have never see

Somehow, the Rams need to find greater urgency and aggression in their defense. It is not enough to look to prevent things…the best defenses are disruptive and push offensive players out of their comfort zone and into situations where mistakes are possible.
The Moors will be looking to get physical with TC and this means our O and particularly D lineman need to grow some serious huevos and start going head to head with people. You can’t have your secondary constantly coming up and making tackles – as the game wears on the “little people” get beaten up and worn down and eventually big plays are the result.
I think this year Mac has had the time needed to get to know his players and it is clear those players are working hard and want it. We need some “big plays” of our own and last week though the Rams fought hard, they looked at time tentative and unsure.
This is a winnable game for TC, but we need to approach it with the same level of aggression the Moors are going to bring. Your 24-14 prediction ain’t bad based on what has been seen so far.

Can anybody find out if the South Pasadena game is Thursday or Friday night. It is listed as Thursday in Maxpreps but Friday here. There are changes because of officiating problems with scheduling. Hoover plays on Thursdays at Glendale but this one is @ South Pass.
Don’t be surprised if Roland does Rosemead in and upsets them. and Montebello brings its defense against Arroyo they have a lot to prove from last years close game. Remember that game may have knock them out of the playoffs. Can Schurr bounce back against a SGV team. This will tell how good they are. If Mt View does not turn the ball over they will win. The Dons are young too. Salesian and Alhambra are good teams. Azusa might be blown out again if they don’t come to play. Good luck and stay healthy.
