@Big T: If getting your degree and then getting hired is a strength I’ll give you that one I guess. What I really feel is lacking though is content. If you put all their original writing together the last few months it would not fill a post-it. Most is just re-print with maybe a one sentence opinion and then hopes for blog hits. I thought to be called a journalist you had to actually write something. If their duties at the paper also require that they work cleaning the office or printing the paper then I get it but if thats not it then I have no idea what they do to fill their day over there.

    @BobbyKnight

Just a little clarification, when I said they know their strengths, I was referring to the ability to do this career. You don’t just walk into a newsroom and call yourself a journalist, you have to possess a certain amount of training in the field to reach a position like the ones they have. Believe me, finding a job like theirs is next to impossible in this day and age.

I also can’t speak for Aram, I don’t know him. I’ve interacted with Freddie and Steve in many other venues outside of Friday nights. That’s where I base my “professional feelings” comment on.
I didn’t know about Aram’s “sneak attack” methods, but that’s not a professional way to go about things. That’s all I can say about him.

Thanks Big T for the response. You must have thought awhile about whether you would make one or not on this subject. I agree with most of what you said but one thing I don’t agree with are the supposed strengths of Fred, Steve etc. What strengths? If looking like cry babies and taking cheap shots is strong then I stand corrected. The one strength they had for a while was access to local HC’s and their ability to get a quote from them. That has gone up in smoke. The site that can get HC’s to finally talk IN SOME DETAIL about their squads will win this battle of the 2012 coverage season. You guys specialize in getting bites from assts but its the HC’s we want to hear from. And a personal note to the HC’s, we the fans would love to hear from you when contacted with a little more than stale old sayings. I think you can trust the Mid guys to treat you fairly as well as the Mid bloggers but anything can happen. But us folks that buy tickets and hotdogs and support High School football would like something. If not X’s and O’s maybe just a human interest story about one of your guys on your team. Last year Aram made sneak attacks on team practices and got a few coaches to talk but I’m afraid with his point spreads and sarcasm he would be run out on a rail if he tries it this year. Of course we wont hear about it if he does because he will not report it. It used to be coaches liked a little publicity for their teams but not so much right now. Anyway thanks again Big T.

It’s time for the Southeast Swami to swoop in and make a few pronouncements on the eve of my trip East to see my fiance and her daughter. First of all, let me say that the top 10, like all polls, are a subjective matter. That’s the nature of the business. This isn’t “Back to The Future II” and Marty McFly hasn’t accidentally brought back a Sports Almanac from the future (which incidentally, is supposed to be in three years, so come on Chicago, get ready!!).
That being said, I’ve taken to this forum before when people argue about who’s number 1. We went through this during the great Mid Valley Draft, which I still maintain had no winners or losers.
It’s the same with a pre-season poll. Ask yourself this, how many Tide fans in Tuscaloosa are pulling their hair out over being ranked second in the pre-season AP Poll, even though they got more first-place votes than LSU. Think of how many USC alumni think that their beloved Fightin’ Methodists should have been ranked higher than the aforementioned Tigers. You can go down the line, someone is going to have a problem with where their school is ranked.
I could personally give you my top 10, but it won’t matter because someone will have a problem with it, but that’s not the point of this thread. The point is that our “distinguished colleagues” over at the LA Newspaper Group, rather than take the poll as our opinions and provide their own as a counterpoint, decided that it would make them look better by belittling our opinions.
By all means, they have the right to say, “we’re out of our minds,” and no doubt the staff here would defend their right to do so, as is our constitutionally-protected right. However, it still makes them look somewhat petty that they have to write that they are embarrassed by something they have no control over.
So we didn’t put West Covina Number 1 in the Southeast, so what? Championships aren’t won in August, That comes in December, especially now that we have two more playoff games to consider for a “True State Champion.” Our good friend SGV said it best. Drama only makes for more drama.
And for those of you who are asking How could we possibly pick ANYONE over West Covina, it’s simple. When the season starts in three weeks, the slate will be wiped clean from EVERYTHING that happened last year. Last year’s title means nothing, because West Covina has to play every game in front of them one at a time, just like every other school in the Southeast. They have only one way to prove this poll wrong; win. That’s what EVERY school has to do to prove us wrong or right. And there’s nothing that ol’ Freddie, Aram or Stevie-R can say that will change that fact.

And now a final personal note, I’ve known Fred and Steve for over a decade, going back to my time with the “World Champion” LA Times. Professionally speaking, they know their strengths and they do their job as best as anyone can in this time of change for the Journalism Trade. But personally speaking, Freddie’s afraid of us. They all are, because we aren’t beholden to a giant news operation like they are.

So let them trash our picks, we’re going to keep going, because the Great and Powerful Oz knows we’re peeking behind the curtain. Goliath knows there’s a rock in the sling with his name on it. The Ewoks are taking it to the Empire.

    Now where’s my tanning oil?

Calpreps said “Cal preps has been setting a line for years by picking final scores of games, what’s the difference?”

you have to love these kind of questions.

The general purpose of spread betting is to create an active market for both sides of a binary wager,

On the other hand, just picking a winner in a proposed contest is just that. Picking a winner.

I’m sure you get that. If you don’t, grab your checkbook and we can meet.

The trib now has high school betting lines with the caveat”for entertainment only”. Thats the same thing football betting cards say on them. I think they are getting desperate over there.

No they are not Solomon and Frazier. Just like when Ricky Johnson graduated, nobody really knew who Solomon was. And when Bj Lee graduated, nobody saw Frazier coming. Etc.etc… The cupboard is far from bare. And if you’re from any Panther team pertinent to the Southeast Division, nobody cares. You will not even be in the discussion come playoff time.

Josh Best and Deshon Love are Jimmy Frazier and Chris Solomon? haha ha ha …yeah that’s a good one. You’re defense of West Co is to rip the Panthers? What is that? Do you even know what Panthers you’re talking about? I didn’t think so…nice try!

    Panther Pride,

We have plenty of guys stepping in. We return a 1000 yard back in Salgado, plus Josh Best and Deshon Love are very good backs that will be juniors this season. Justin Hornsby will be eligible this year to take Meaders spot as the leader on defense. And Muleck Henderson returns as our primary DB. The real question is, who do the Panthers have returning from their average team from last year? Oh right…who cares anyway?

Robledo is a jack ass. Who cares if MVS picked LM #1 and WC #2?!! Isn’t everyone entitled to their opinion? The Trib guys do good work but they are so dramatic about this kind of stuff. Fred’s post was extremely unprofessional IMO.
