Rio Hondo League at a Glance

One preview? Let’s have three weeks of previews.

Former Temple City defensive lineman Justin Sutton had an entire career in the second half against Arroyo in the 2009 “Mid Valley Classic”…Rumor has it Steven Rivera still has nightmares about this guy.

    @rhlfan,
Not sure about CIF clearance for the Bayles, they transferred less than a week. At worst, they will sit out first five games if they played varsity last year. Regarding the Madrid kid, pretty good QB that wasn’t going to play behind three years returning starter Paul Telles at St. Paul. He is more than adequate in replacing Joel Harmon.

Wow, both bayle’s transferred to St. Francis? any word on if the transfer went through CIF clean?

in terms of how it will affect San Marino, I doubt it will hurt them that much. SM still has strong receivers that will back up their quarterback well. Neither are seniors either. Don’t think it’ll make too much difference this year, maybe in upcoming years.

Hmm, St. Paul is a legit school, but I can’t imagine anyone that good transferring from St. Paul to South Pasadena…we’ll just have to wait out and see how this plays out in the RHL. South Pas still needs strong work on their defense and run game, pass game, if this Madrid kid is legit, will be more then enough however. I’d put them above LC, SM more of a stretch.

    @MVS Staff,
Don’t hold me to the last name, Chris and Matt Bales. Chris, a junior, plays WR and LB and Matt, a Sophmore, plays QB and DB. From what I heard, both were projected starters for San Marino. The QB transfer from St. Paul to South Pasadena, his name is David Madrid, a junior. Good size kid with a strong arm and nice touch, he will give the wing T offense another dimension.

South Pasadena will finish second in the league this season. St. Paul QB transfer taking over for Harmon has good arm and touch and new DC, Armando Gonzales, will maximize the Tigers potential on defense. His vast coaching experience includes prior stints at Harvard Westlake and St. Francis. Head coach Marty Konrad is doing a good job of changing the culture of the program. San Marino recently losing two starters to St. Francis will hurt.

MVS Staff: Who did San Marino lose to St. Francis?

SM has been a one man savior team for too long….going back to a kid I can’t even remember,,,Troutman, something like that, followed by 3 years of Yortsos, who saved probably 20 plus TD’s (2 or 3 against Rosemead alone) on defense – and always came down with key catches on those floaters hurled out of the SM backfield into a crowd of players. Guess you can add Hung and Do to the list as well. This year Gott will be a major stud, but the Titans have some skill sprinkled in many places in the line up.
TEMPLE CITY – Reed and Starling could transpose into a Ruckle/Stewart combo —-if TC has a serious line and a line coach who knows how to motivate. Starling has good speed and Reed is one reason I will find myself returning to watch another season of TC football.
Reed’s stand up, get in your opponents face protection for a fallen TC player last year – may have been the highlight of the entire season.

    SP Tiger Fan,

i’m going to guess you are a student or a player at South Pas, because for you to have to go back two years to cite a major SM blowout is pretty pathetic. in fact, i’ll direct your attention to one year ago, when SM blew SP out on your homecoming night.

Maybe losing Joey Harmon won’t be the worst thing in the world, who knows? Anyone know anything about the new quarterback?

and yes, SM does seem to be looking pretty good, I wouldn’t say best squad in a decade but they’ve got the tools.

First off, thanks to MV for the Sutton photo and remembrance of the days when TC had a D line to fear, which also included Matt O’Malley, Steven Fei and a young Carlos Mota. Rivera proved himself a seriously tough dude that night, taking bodily abuse again and again as his O line was steamrollered and forced to hold on every passing down. Rivera hung around long enough to win the game with a wounded duck hail mary late in the 4th, as the TC secondary got lost in rookie-ism and watched the game slip away. What an opener it was though, starting 7-7 with barely a minute elapsed in the 1st quarter.

Losing Harmon will not cripple South Pas, they have some studs and their off season lifting continues to pay off. However, I agree with RHL fan about the Titans – SM may have the best squad in a decade. much more than a QB and Gott, they are loaded this year with returnees and upcomers and have some speed on the roster as well. Beware the BMW boys……

RHL Fan, clearly your know nothing about SP football. Losing Joey Harmon will not be a significant factor in the team’s performance this year. I look for a third consecuetive 6-4 season. and by the way, what happened to SM in 2010 versus SP?! can anyone spell blowout!

projected standings, schedule strengths, a real preview of the RHL, and my own trivia because the trivia for this preview is weak:

    1.) Monrovia (9-1)
Schedule: Strong. Monrovia really put a lot of effort into expanding their preseason schedule yet again. St. Francis v. Monrovia should be a great indicator as to which team really is the powerhouse in the Pasadena area. (4-1)
Why Number One: Who else? Monrovia seems poised to once again to run through the RHL like its own running bag. Bringing back Blake Heyworth, as well as an extremely strong linebacker corps will add to their chances to a three-peat for CIF Champs.
Trivia: Ellis McCarthy will be entering his freshman year at UCLA coming off a surgery. Wonder how he’ll do.

    2.) San Marino (8-2)
Schedule: Strong-medium. San Marino will revamp their entire preseason with this entirely new schedule with the exception of Eagle Rock. Crescenta Valley will present a very formidable challenge, as well as answer any lingering questions about the Titans from last season. (4-1)
Why Number Two: While SM loses key talent including Kwame Do, they will still bring back powers like Matt Wofford and Nick Gott, to head their offense. Don’t see any team besides LC giving them a strong run for second place in the RHL.
Trivia: SM was CIF Champs their first year of existence.

    3.) La Canada (7-3)
Strength of Schedule: Strong. Crescenta Valley and a decently strong Arroyo team will present challenges for this LC team. I still firmly believe Alhambra to be overrated. (4-1)
Why Number Three: LC is a team that doesn’t have many stand out talents, but work very well together. The loss of seniors won’t be that bad on them, and while I believe they won’t be able to get through SM, the rest of the RHL should be okay.
Trivia: LC’s unofficial mascot is a cat named Spartaca, who will be in need of a new home this coming year.

    4.) South Pasadena (5-5)
Schedule: Medium-Low. San Gabriel is the biggest threat on the schedule, but after that this is another typical South Pasadena pre-league schedule, schedules that usually include only one or two strong teams. (3-2)
Why Number Four: Losing Joey Harmon will be huge on South Pasadena as they seek to return to the playoffs. With LC the main roadblock in that quest, they’ll need their defense to be functioning on high capacity, but senior losses will not bode well for South Pas. As for their offense…it needs work.
Trivia: South Pasadena had another school split off them in the mid-fifites. That school, now known as San Marino, presents one of the better rivalries in the area.

    5.) Temple City (1-9)
Strength of Schedule: Medium-low. I shouldn’t say medium-low though, because this schedule, if looked at subjectively, will still all prseent challenges to a TC team reeling from a horrible 1-9 season. (0-5)
Why Number Five: Temple City simply has no new weapons, and nothing new to bring to the table to in league play.
Trivia: “Legendary” HC Mike Mooney left to San Marino High School.

    6.) Blair (0-10)
Schedule: uh…will they even be playing this year? (0-5)
Why Number Six: They might not even play this year. With a reported only 7 players showing up to practices in AUGUST, even if they were to field a team, it’d be dangerous to their own safety.
Trivia: Blair was the last team to beat Monrovia in league play in 2007. They won league that year. Five years later they can’t field a team..
