Covina-South Hills Scrimmage

Covina Quarterback Darren Torres

(Covina District Field) – “We look a lot better now than we did in the spring. That’s for sure,” said first year Covina Coach Joe Brown. The Colts are coming off of a season in which they reached the semi finals but have since been hit hard…really hard, by graduation.

Emilio Zertuche is also in the QB battle

“Yeah that team last year was special. They all were seniors at the same time. We have only one starter back on defense,” Brown said,

The Big Boys taking a break

Although they are not the name players that stepped on the field last year, Covina isn’t completley void of talent. Darren Torres, who has been the kicker for Covina the last couple of years, is now in a battle for quarterback with Emilio Zertuche.

It all gets under way “for keeps” next week

“Tonight will go a long way in deciding on the starter. We’ll go back and watch some film,” Brown said.

South Hills QB Adam Goss and first year HC Albert Rodriguez

Both players saw time in the scrimmage Friday night against South Hills. Evan Stretton, who started last year is back at wide receiver along with David Gonzalez. Frankie Ramirez will be the feature back. Justin Turner, Elia Sema and Albert Naranjo will be the guys along the front lines.

Naranjo played last season with a hole in his heart…literally. He had heart surgery and thought that he would never play football again. But has has fully recovered and is now a living breathing miracle and starting for the Colts.

Ready to rock

“It’s quite a story,” Brown said. “Unbelievable.”

Defensively Covina is led by Turner, who will play on both sides of the ball and A.J. Oserio.

Covina opens the season with West Covina next Friday night in  game that is going to be televised by Fox. ”At first I was thinking oh no, not in my first game as coach. But then I started thinking the kids are excited about it so it’s good,” said Brown.

Covina then faces La Puente, El Monte ,Walnut and then Northview to start Valle Vista League play.

As for South Hills, quarterback Adam Goss looked good and the skill players made some plays but when you compete in a league with the likes of Charter Oak, Chino Hills, Damien and Ayala, it makes it tough.

    Tpeterson,

Idk what scrimmage u were watching,
But the Colts made SH look really bad.
SH was huge physically, but the Colts
Looked decent size compared to them,
The Colts were much quicker and more aggressive
I don’t see SH winning more than 2 games.
If the Colts stay healthy, they will give SD all
    They can handle.
