(South Pasadena) – A tough defensive backfield that caused three turnovers and 17-0 start to the game was enough for South Pasadena to hold off Alhambra, 24-10.
The Tigers offense survived a flag fest during its most crucial drive as it was called for six penalties. It destiny in its hands late in the third quarter and staring at a third and 17, David Madrid threaded the needle to Nathan Lee, who showed incredible focus as Moors defensive back Jonathan Rojas jumped the route and appeared to intercepted the pass only to watch it go through his hands.
Four plays later South Pasadena found itself in the end zone for the game clinching score as Madrid hit Hector Fernandez on a post route for a 21-yard touchdown reception.
Madrid went 12 of 22 for 191 yards with two touchdowns to lead the Tigers offense when it counted the most.
South Pasadena opened the scoring as Bryan Bednarski evaded three Alhambra defenders on his way to a 43-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. Bednarski finished with 75 yards receiving.
On Alhambra’s next possession Armando Amaya threw one of his three interceptions of the game as he forced a pass into coverage that was picked off by Hector Fernandez.
South Pasadena methodically went down the field and scored on a broken play as Madrid had trouble with the snap and as the Moors were trying to jump on the loose ball, Nathan Lee scooped it up and ran 24-yards for a Tiger touchdown.
With the Tigers already up 17-0 late in the first half, Madrid went for the jugular to end the game in the first half, but was intercepted by Sebastian Espinosa at the Alhambra 23-yard line. Espinosa nearly scored on the play only to be caught at the four yard line.
Two plays later, Ezra Broadus scored from three-yards out to send the Moors into the halftime break down by 10.
Broadus finished the night rushing for 92 yards on 11 carries.
The Tigers defense bent but didn’t break at the beginning of the third quarter as Brandon Barbera was called upon to hit a 30-yard field goal to cut the lead to seven.
With the win South Pasadena improved to 3-1 as they head on the road to face Beverly Hills. The loss by Alhambra drops them to 2-3 heading into the bye week.
