Pacific League Roundup: Arcadia, Burbank, Pasadena Win

By Corey Kwok

Arcadia 3, Crescenta Valley 2
David Dominguez (1/3, 2 RBI’s, BB) tied the game in the second inning on an RBI walk before belting a decisive and eventual game winning RBI double at the top of the sixth that drove Arcadia (14-6, 5-2) onto a convincing 3-2 victory over arch-rival Crescenta Valley (13-7, 5-2) at Stengel Field Friday to conclude the first round of Pacific league play.

Austin Georgen (6-2, 0.89 ERA, 47.0 IP, 48 K) started on the bump for the Apaches and fell behind 1-0 in the first after walking a batter and pegging two more to load the bases with one out, before Nolan Rea (1/3) singled in Bryan Wang (1/3, R, HBP) to put the Falcons ahead. Georgen then navigated out of the conundrum without further damage and nixed 11 of the next 12 he faced (including a pickoff to end the ensuing inning) from that point on to the end of the fourth.

Joe Torres (1/2, R, BB) led off the fifth on second base for CV after a single to left was mismanaged, and later scored to tie it at 2-2 when Michael Russo (0/2, BB) poked it back to Georgen, who afterward caught Jonny Psaltis (0/2, HBP) looking for the third out, before leaving after back-to-back walks with one out to start the seventh.

Joey Harmon (2 SV, 0.00 ERA, 2.1 IP, 3 K) then took the pitching reins and got the job done in just five pitches, inducing a 6-4-3 double play at the end to notch his second save of the season and secure the win for both Georgen and Arcadia.

The victory brings the Apaches one game out of first with a 5-2 mark in league for third place, behind an all-Burbank city affair atop the standings. Just one game separates the top four teams.

Elsewhere In The Pacific League:

Burbank (11-7, 6-1) hung on to beat Burroughs (13-7, 6-1) 8-6 and take first place by a half game in a homer-friendly fiesta which featured five shots going yard combined. Ricky Perez of Burbank led the barrage with two jacks, first a solo shot before smoking a three run blast. Both cleared the high fence short porch onto the football field in right.

In the Hardball Tussle, Pasadena (10-9, 3-4) finished round one of league by pummeling its arch-rival Muir (1-10, 0-7) 15-0 in a mercy-shortened five inning quick in and out. Individual highlights for this game were not available at time of this post’s publishing.

And in the battle between two Glendale-city schools, Hoover (4-12, 2-5) came out on top, defeating Glendale (2-13, 1-6) 6-3. Orlando Marin hurled six quality innings en route to the win, yielding three hits and three walks, while helping his own cause at bat by batting 2 for 3 with two RBI’s. The Tornadoes, on a roll of late, have won three of its last four, including victories of 8-7 over San Gabriel and 7-4 on Muir.
