"...A journey we all must take."---Gandalf

“…A journey we all must take.”—Gandalf

“We must cut out all that is different like a cancerous growth…It is essential in this society that we not only have a norm, but that we conform to that norm.”

Kick it!

Alhambra and Arcadia open their seasons this Friday at Salter Stadium. Did you know the last time the Moors beat the Apaches was on November 10th, 1972? They beat them, 7-0, at Arcadia, in a rain storm, when quarterback Paul Hernandez slipped into the end zone behind his left guard with 29 seconds to play.

Last Add Arcadia 1972: Even though they won the following week against Muir, the loss bounced the Apaches, 7-2, from a playoff berth.

Who would have thought nine years ago, going into the 2014 season, former USC quarterback/fledgling tight end Matt Cassel would be set to start for his third NFL team and 15,302 yards, 93 touchdowns, into his career?

Former USC starting quarterback/ballroom dancer/Heisman Trophy winner/tenth overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft Matt Leinart has not thrown a regular season pass since 2012 and looks like he’s going to finish with just 4,065 yards and 15 touchdowns.

I want to believe in Pomona…I’ve given my heart before…You understand? I believe the Red Devils can be great, but I don’t know if they can really be great. This is a hard one because they have talent.

Next Add Alhambra 1972: A week after winning at Arcadia, they won on the road at El Rancho to close out the Pacific League schedule. Moors kicker Joe Tatone booted a 30-yard field goal with 1:38 to play for a 10-8 victory over the Dons. The Ranch had taken an 8-7 lead with 6:30 to play in the fourth quarter when quarterback Don Millan hit Dick Alberls for a 45-yard touchdown pass and Ed Balley added the deuce on a run.

Former Charter Oak linebacker and San Jose State standout Keith Smith is in the Dallas Cowboys camp as an undrafted free agent. He is attempting to make the squad as a safety.

Warren alum George Wickens is now playing at East Los Angeles College and has made the move from defensive line to offensive line (left guard).

“There is going to be a learning curve,” Wickens said. “With many mistakes before I get the hang of it, but I am eager to learn, and get better.”

Brother Andy Wickens, a sophomore, will be starting at tackle for Warren this season.

Last Add Alhambra 1972: The Moors finished second in the Pacific League, behind Pasadena, with an 8-1 record. La Serna also finished 8-1 and in second place in the Whitmont League behind Santa Fe. Come CIF selection time on Sunday the committee couldn’t decide which team would play in the first round…and which team would turn in its gear.

The California Tie Breaker, adopted for use in the CIF playoffs, was put into effect and on Monday, November 20th both La Serna and Alhambra met at Gahr High School to decide the deadlock.

The ball was placed at the 50 yard line, the teams alternated eight plays (expanded from four), and at the conclusion whichever side was in the opponent’s territory was declared the winner. No kicking or punting was allowed.

At its own 47, La Serna, down to its last play, gave the ball to C.J. Bernal who went off left tackle 53-yards for a touchdown. The Alhambra season was over.

As a Rams fan I’m happy to have Shaun Hill. He’s not Kyle Boller, Kellen Clemens, Jaime Martin, or Pete Beathard and for that I am grateful.

Remember when USC’s Winston Justice was the promising newcomer to the NFL? Now he’s just unemployed after being released by the Broncos and weeks away from turning 30. He was in Denver last season, Indy the year before that, and started his career in Philly where he played from 2006-2011.

They come and they go so fast.

Last Add La Serna 1972: The tie breaker victory over Alhambra earned them a date with St. Paul the number one ranked team in the 4A Division. The Swordsmen beat them 47-0 at El Rancho High School.

Regards:
In regards to Logan Mankins: New England traded the Pro Bowl guard to Tampa Bay today.
In regards to Brandon Sermons: The Diamond Ranch/UCLA alum was cut by the Arizona Cardinals today.
In regards to Chase Rettig: The former Boston College quarterback and a starter at La Salle in both 2007 & 2008 was released by the Green Bay Packers today.
In regards to Arroyo stat keeping: I can personally vouch for the character and professionalism of Arroyo stat guy Steve Singiser. Plus, in the 11 years I have known him, I have never appeared in the Knights stat box with a recorded tackle. Over the years I have made tackles at Temple City, Baldwin Park, and West El Monte Poly.
In regards to Ethan Westbrooks: Have you heard his name?
