During the course of the 2015 season, there were several times that Cathedral head coach Kevin Pearson was criticized for not running the ball enough. Even down in the red zone the Phantoms would drop back and throw the ball instead of giving it to one of the backs.
But when you look at the kind of season that Cathedral quarterback Andrew Tovar had this year you can begin to understand the philosophy.
Tovar torched the Southeast Division completing 247 passes for 3,712 yards and 47 touchdowns with only six interceptions in 367 attempts.
Tovar averaged 285 yards passing per game and fired six touchdown passes on three different occasions. Against Verbum Dei in October he threw for over 500 yards.
Tovar went down swinging. In the final game of the season, a 38-7 loss to La Mirada that knocked the Phantoms out of the playoffs, Tovar completed 28 of 39 for 277 yards and a touchdown. Tovar had a QB rating of 133.1 for the year.
Only a junior, Tovar still has another year to torture defensive coordinators but for this year Tovar is our Southeast Division Player of the Year.
