1. Former TC National Little League Dodger Brian Serven was named first team all PAC 12 at Arizona State as a catcher and was drafted in June in the 5th round (pick #140) by the Colorado Rockies. He is now playing for the Grand Junction Rockies.
2. Former El Monte Eastern Little League Giant Alyssa Villalpando is now playing for the Mexico National Team.
3. Melvin Durslag, a former sports columnist for the Herald Examiner who covered sports in Los Angeles since 1939, passed away last Sunday at the age of 95.
4. Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor will not be charged with a crime following accusations that the former USC receiver sexually assaulted a dancer at a Philadelphia club in June.
5. Cornerback Charles Tillman, who spent 12 years with the Chicago Bears, and last season with the Carolina Panthers, announced his retirement. Tillman was named to two Pro Bowls.
6. The Dodgers shut down ace Clayton Kershaw due to more back discomfort. It is uncertain when he will return.
7. Giovani dos Santos of the LA Galaxy is the team’s lone representative on the Major League Soccer All-Star team.
8. The NFL will test computer chips in footballs in the preseason to determine how well the balls perform.
9. On this date in 1970, the Dodgers’ Bill Singer throws a no-hitter beating the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0.
10. Happy Birthday to former NBA guard Ray Allen who turns 41 today. Allen, who played for Milwaukee, Seattle, Boston, and Miami, is the NBA’s all-time leader in career three-point field goals made in both the regular and postseason.
