Game Night: Week Nine

Cathedral QB Bryce Young and the Phantoms have a huge game vs. St. Francis

Cathedral QB Bryce Young and the Phantoms have a huge game vs. St. Francis

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated

St. Francis (8-0) at Cathedral (8-0)

The two best teams in the Angelus League are finally getting together. Both are undefeated and both are chomping at the bit. The Golden Knights can score and their defense hasn’t been bad either. The Phantoms struggled last week to beat Salesian by a point but St. Francis only beat the Mustangs by a touchdown. Another common opponent, La Salle, was shut out by Cathedral but scored 28 on St. Francis. The Phantoms look a little better defensively but they do need to avoid the penalties that plagued them against La Salle. Cathedral also has the home field advantage but there’s something about St. Francis. The Golden Knights win in a close call.

Los Altos (8-0) at Charter Oak (8-0)

Another battle of unbeatens – this one in the Hacienda. The Conquerors have been rolling over everything in their path. They really haven’t been tested all year with their closest game being Glendora in a 42-34 win. The Chargers, despite losing their starting quarterback, have been cruising as well. Los Altos can run the ball. Charter Oak can throw it. Well actually they can run it too. This will be the Chargers toughest test of the season by far but they’re always up for challenges. They’ll meet this one as well. Charter Oak holds on to win.

South Pasadena (6-1) at San Marino (3-4)

At first glance this one doesn’t really get the blood boiling. But South Pasadena is still battling for a Rio Hondo League title and San Marino is fighting for second place. The Titans fell short at Monrovia and they need this one to get re-established. South Pas is 6-1 overall but more importantly 2-0 in league and a win here would give them the confidence for a possible undefeated Rio run. The Tigers will use that carrot to carry them through. San Marino hangs around but South Pasadena emerges with the W.

Crescenta Valley (7-1, 5-0) at Burbank (6-2, 5-0)

All the marbles are on the line in the Pacific League in this one. Both teams are undefeated in league action and would like to remain that way heading into their season finales. On offense the Falcons and Bulldogs have put up similar numbers averaging 40 and 39 points a game respectively. On defense while both have been solid, Crescenta Valley has been a little more stingy giving up 9 to Burbank’s 14. The Bulldogs get this one at home which will be the difference.

West Covina (5-3, 2-1) at Chino (4-4, 1-2)

Both the Bulldogs and the Cowboys need this game to keep playoff hopes alive. A loss for West Covina means a win against Los Altos in the season finale will be a must to get at-large consideration.  A loss for Chino and they can phone the last one in as playoff hopes will be dashed. It’s a cliche but the team who makes the fewest mistakes in this one will come out on top and neither can afford to let the other get more than a two score advantage.

Duarte (6-2, 3-0) at Nogales (7-1, 2-1)

At 7-1 the Nobles are having the best year they have had in a while which makes the loss a couple of weeks ago to an Azusa team in a down year a head scratcher. The Falcons have cruised so far through the Montivew winning three straight and only Nogales stands in the way of a league title. Can Nogales prove that the Azusa game was a fluke and contain the athletes at Duarte. They can this time.
