San Gabriel HC Joe Ledesma is out at San Gabriel.

By Tim Peterson

(San Gabriel) – Joe Ledesma is out as the head coach at San Gabriel multiple sources confirmed Wednesday.

The head football coaching job is listed on the CIF Southern Section website and also comes with a teaching position.

Ledesma went 7-23 overall in three years at the helm. This past season the Matadors went 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the Almont which was good for fifth place.

San Gabriel hasn’t made the playoffs since 2011 when the Mats, under then HC Jude Oliva, advanced to the Mid-Valley Division Championship game against Monrovia.

Schurr last won a CIf Title in 1980. 8 Straight League Titles in a weak league. That was also 40 year’s ago. Schurr Sucks.

SG is already at the bottom. They have nobody in the stands and 3 0f 5 league games they lost by running clock. They maybe have two athletes in the whole program but they might be transferring out soon. This will be a tough job with no athletes and bad demographic for football. The admin must get creative in order for SG to compete in league and no chance they make the playoffs. Montebello and Schurr battling for 1st and BG and Alhambra for the other playoff spot. SG and Kepple last.

lets get it straight , politics in SG will not bring a good coach much less a smart or great one, the parents are so obnoxious and think they know football, also they scream at coaches acting tough, gangster like attitude is not bringing good coaches either , so the only option they have is hire within , hire a desperate previous HC, and loose for a couple of years to humble them bleacher coaches, , so when they finally get a smart guy who can coach and they start winning the can be appreciative instead of being anal and jerks to him. sometimes a program has to get to the bottom to start the climb back up.

I think Coach JC Lopez would be a great choice for the position. He has coached at SG before and also at Alhambra. He knows the Almont league and has coached at other higher divisions as his last coaching gig was at Pacifica high which is in division four.

We all know that you have to win, it doesn’t matter where you are coaching, the name of the game is winning! Every head coach ACCEPTS this when he agrees to become a high schools head coach. Let’s not be fooled, Coach Ledesma knew and understood what he was getting into when he ACCEPTED the San Gabriel position. When you ACCEPT a head coaching position you have asked and answered the one and only question that matters, “Can I win here?” And if you ACCEPTED the position you have said yes, every head coach I would assume has a three or four year plan (depending on how much work is needed) and when that time has come did the plan you put in place work. For San Gabriel it did not, time to move on. This question and time frame is happening all over the San Gabriel Valley, here is a list of schools who’s coach has the clock ticking on their plan:

    Rosemead
    Temple City
    Cal High
    Diamond Bar
    Gabrielino

Jude has decided not to take over at Buena Park. It means that he will probably lose his teaching job there as well since he is not tenured there. There is a very real possibility that Jude could be lured back to SG, besides he was always playing checkers with coaches who were playing chess in Orange County.

Please tell us what PR Dons coaches were at SG? No one ever said the kids were better, they are simply tougher hard nosed kids. Which coach specifically have you tried to discuss offense with? Joe learned the Wing-T from legendary Dick Shelko and has ran it the same way for decades, it worked at ER and Cal. Everything is always about El Rancho because the Ranch will always be one of the only schools in the area that has a national title and an unmatched tradition so all these losers love to hate. When you let BG put up 47 this year that’s all heart or lack thereof. The punchline is when you can’t differentiate between their, there and they’re.

But hey, if you have something for the “readership” to enjoy about those powerhouses named Cal, Whittier or Alhambra, we’re all ears.

When anonymous says that anyone who has coached at, or are from El Rancho, will never be on his staff, does that mean he would turn-down Adrian Medrano, Vinnie Lopez and Ernie Johnson? Sounds like a real winner.

  31. January 5, 2017 - 7:55 pm | Permalink

Just read @LOL’s posts clear indicator of what I’m talking about. Our kids are so much better than anywhere else, our coaching is superior you can’t coach the “Pico” way without “Pico” kids lol. It can’t be that ledesma just failed it has to someone else’s fault. Those SG kids are just soft lol. OMG. It’s embarrassing to hear but that is the these dudes reality lol they truly believe that. Pico myopians, classic comedy. If you ever want a good laugh go talk offense with those coaches over 40, and just ask a fundamental question and the punchline will be they’re response. Haha

Don’t worry no one from El Rancho will ever go to San Gabriel, Joe tried multiple times to get head coaching positions and settled on San Gabriel a place where you’re lucky to have 1 or 2 kids with football experience, it was never going to work out anyway. Heck you could get Medrano and your kids would all quit in spring football.

Joe Ledesma hasn’t coached at the Pico Rivera Dons for who knows how many years. None of the Pico Rivera Dons run the Wing-T in case you missed it. Stop blaming Joe Ledesma for having no athletes, no heart, no agressive kids, the admin had to know he ran the wing-t before making the choice, it simply would never work with that kind of kid. Erase the couple of good years under Jude and Jones and San Gabriel continues to be a bottom feeder, quit talking like there is some kind of tradition other than “SG You Know.” Medrano runs a very dynamic RPO offense however if he choose to run some Wing-T it would work because Pico kids are tougher than SG kids there is no other explanation.

  36. January 5, 2017 - 5:02 pm | Permalink

Ledesmas wing-t was the worst version I’ve ever seen. People forget how incredibly difficult it is to run the wing-t all the adjustments needed to counter stacked boxes. There’s a reason the offense is fading it takes years of working with someone with a high knowledge of the offensive workings before you can even think of running it. In theory it’s a powerful offense but so hard to execute. These Pico Don coaches really think ” hey, it worked in jr all American ” No! You had a stud Runningback who was the best player on the field that made you look good. Lol San Dimas for example runs this offense better than anyone in the area. Ledesma, go sit with them for a season and you’ll find out how little you know about the offense. Hey fellas, You ever have a conversation with wing-t coach? They answer every question with running through a brick wall… 10 man box ” I don’t care I’m still pounding it” errr! Lol Now imagine having a conversation with a Pico Don wing-t coach lol. OMG talk about myopia! These dudes will question Nick Saban himself ” uh imagine Alabama in the wing t hu hu” just go away already! At least Medrano was smart enough to stay away from it realizing that he doesn’t know it well enough to run. SG, was a finalist in the air raid system under Olivia his departure brought in wing-t and worse off Pico Don Wing t which had equated to 4 league wins in his tenure. SMH. You Pico boys need to get over yourselves those youth days are over in high school coaches actually know how to make adjustments so you need to follow suit! Lmfao this is from a former Pico coach D.A in case you were wondering.

@Almont in order to bring back the spread you need the right kind of athletes. SG is more of a pro offense if you ask me and also they need the support from administrators and the District witch we all know they don’t have. Good luck with whom ever they bring in this time.

The problem isn’t the El Rancho coaches, the problem is an El Rancho coach that does things the El Rancho way needs tough hard nosed no quit aggressive kids which he simply couldn’t get at San Gabriel. San Gabriel needs to run a spread, no other offense will work, wing-t at San Gabriel was doomed from the start.
