Spartans Sharp In Win Over Bulldogs

Miguel Aguero was on fire for the Spartans Friday night.

(Montebello) The Schurr Spartans and the Garfield Bulldogs battled for the first time in the schools histories. The two teams traded early touchdowns until the Spartans broke it open with 32 unanswered points and belted the Bulldogs 46-14 before a packed house at Ken Davis Field.

Miguel Aguero had a huge night for the Spartans throwing for 353 yards and five touchdowns and added 26 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

While Aguero had a great night, it was the Bulldogs who got on the board first. Adam Polanco found Jalen Lawrence from 13 yards away to cap an eight play 54 yard drive and give Garfield the early 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs were set up with good field position when Kevin Lopez, fighting for extra yards, coughed up the ball at the Garfield 46.

Schurr answered right back with a score on the ensuing drive. The Spartans traveled 61 yards on six plays finalized with Aguero getting his first td pass on the night to Miguel Torres.

Francisco Remigio score three times for Schurr in the win.

Garfield returned the score with another of their own late in the first period on a 10 yard run by Polanco. The score was the last of the night for the Bulldogs as the Spartan defense shut Garfield out the rest of the way.

The Spartan offense caught fire and did most of their damage in the second quarter. Three more touchdown passes by Aguero, two to Francisco Remigio and another to Aaron Silva and a seven yard touchdown scamper by Remigio pushed the Schurr lead to 34-14 as the teams headed to the locker room at the break.

The Spartan defense put a pounding on the Bulldogs.

Just past midway through the third quarter, Schurr got on the board again when Aguero found Lance Babb II on a 39 yard catch and run to paydirt. The Aguero to Remigio connection played a key roll in the the drive as faced with a third and 35, Aguero found Remigio over the middle and the senior receiver picked up 40 yards on the play.

Non other than Aguero would finish off the scoring the evening calling his own number from seven yards away capping a 10 play, 89 yard drive with 10:12 remaining in the game.

Remigio finished the night hauling in nine passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns and carrying the rock six times for 36 yards and another score. Babb II had 10 catches of his own for 111 yards and the lone score.

Not much on the highlight film for Garfield as most of the damage was done by Polanco who threw for 61 yards and a score and carried the ball 16 times for 149 yards and another score.

The Spartans will have a big test next week when they travel to Arroyo to take on the 2016 Division 12 Champs. The game will be a rematch of last years Division 12 quarterfinals match in which the Knights beat the Spartans 42-28.

@ Lancer Alumn / Not so smart

You are the one that keeps throwing names out hiding behind your name Lancer Alumn even though you probably didn’t even graduate from that prestigious school of academia. This was a column about Schurr High School’s victory over Garfield. How about you little lancers just keep your garbage on the other side of the tracks where you belong!

Wow, Tony Bentley! Let it go!

Your three amigo group didn’t have much success! Next you are going to tell us how Al Cuevas was an awesome coach also. Approximatley 30+ wins and 70+ losses in 11 years as head coach.

Yes, it’s awesome that you guys graduated from BGHS, graduated from college and came back to the community and became teachers at your alma mater. That definitely is commendable! Congratulations on that.

But you all sucked as coaches!

As an Alumni and former football parent I’m not sure what you base your statement on accomplishments on and who you are comparing Ramos to. My son played and graduated along with all of his team mates in the late 2000’s, not his most successful years as far as wins and losses, but his teams were always competitive and they graduated which is huge at a school like Bell Gardens that loses over 60% of its incoming freshman class every year. (1200 incoming and graduating a little over 500). He provided discipline and structure for a generation of young men as an assistant and head coach. As far as accomplishments, again who and what and whose expectations are we comparing him to? I could only say lets compare him to Bell Gardens History of coaches and then let the chips fall where they may.
    Marshall Latimer 1948 – 1950, (5 – 22) .230%, 0 league championships, 0 playoff games
    Mike Smaha 1951 – 1953, (11 – 16) .390%, 0 league championships, 0 playoff games
    Gene Goebel 1954 – 1964, (39 – 59) .420% 0 league championships, 0 playoff games
    Mike Kuklenski 1965 – 1966, (0 – 18) .000% 0 league championships, 0 playoff games
    John Mcnichols 1967 – 1969, (7 – 18 – 2) .260% 0 league championships, 0 playoff games
    Merlin Driggs 1970 – 1971, (5 – 13) .275% 0 league championships, 0 playoff games
    Chuck Manuson 1972 – 1976 (22 – 25) .460% 0 league championships, (1 -1) .500% in playoff games
    Dave Newell 1977 – 1999 (189 – 75 – 5) .720% 11 league championships, 3 CIF finals, (22 – 20) .523% in play
    Dave Ramos 2000 – 2012 (82 – 59 – 3) .581% 5 league championships, 0 finals, (4 – 9) .444 in playoffs
    Geoff Ackerman 2013 – 2015 (17 – 15) .531% 0 league championships, (0 – 2) .000% in playoffs
    Margarito Beltran 2016 – Present (2 – 9) .181% 0 league championships, 0 playoff games

In addition to his record compared to Head Coaches in Bell Gardens of its 16 league championships he was either a player, an assistant or head coach on 12 of them and in the program for 2 more. So he had a hand in 14 of 16 league championships. So as an alumni and parent of a former player I’d have to disagree with you when you say he didn’t accomplish anything. Can’t comment about the “clowns” other than Ramos gave 26 years of service to BGHS including getting a college degree so he could coach and have a career there. In my opinion cut the guy some slack and realize that he is gone.

I agree with you it was time for change but you and I know the hiring process was a fraud when it was up for grabs between Jude Oliva and Ackerman. Jude was more qualified for the job but Juan Hererra already knew he wanted Ackerman over anybody. Ackermans heart was never in it why do you think he hung it up after 2 seasons leaving the program in turmoil. I believe the hiring of Beltran was great for the program unfortunately he inherited a program in turmoil. He will and already has the program heading in the right direction but it’s going to be another couple years they will be able to compete with Schurr and Montebello. If Juan Hererra would of done the right thing the BG program would of been contending for rings already. Jude Oliva deserved the job and he was not even given a fair chance.

ROTF! Coming from a real BGHS alumnus and parent, that was the best thing he could have done for BGHS. What did those guys accomplish for BGHS! Nothing!

In about 12 years as head coach, what did Ramos accomplish? Nothing. Maybe 2 league titles. Those clowns thought they owned the school. The only good thing about those clowns was their loyalty to each other, not BGHS. They ran together, and fell together.

Believe me, it was time for a change. The majority of my alumni association agree and so does our football parent group.

The real truth that the BG program is where it’s at right now is because of the crooked stuff the principal did, he forced Coach Ramos to resign after a 8-2 record for whatever reason, then he decided to hire his compa Coach Ackerman to take over who never really wanted to take over. If he would of done the right thing in hiring the best man for the position he would of hired Coach Oliva who was the top candidate but he already had his compa in line for the job. This all falls on Mr. Juan Hererra look what he has done he has his compa as the A. D for Bell Gardens who really never deserved the job, his Admin team are all his boys. BG has loss so much over this man great coaches and players he’s the person at fault. I do believe that BG finally does have some good leadership with Beltran but it’s going to take them a couple more years to being able to compete with Schurr and Montebello. Juan Hererra has to go put it all out in the open Juan you failed by not hiring Jude Oliva if you would of done the right thing BG would of been on top by now, shame on you Mr. Hererra for what you have done to BG. You got what you wanted you removed Ramos, Sanchez, and Bentley why because you did not like them. BG is in turmoil with all sports, please resign and bring in someone that want’s to be at BG for the long run.
