@ Bank (yet again): You seem to have made it your personal mission to go onto several of these blog threads and twist my comments until they’re unrecognizable. You’ve become a master of misrepresentation.
For the third time at Mid-Valley Sports.com, I was not comparing Coach Bergstrom to John Wooden. But, yes, I was advising a little more patience from Alhambra’s concerned fan base.
I used Coach Wooden and former AHS head football coach Gil Ruedaflores as examples of individuals who labored many years to build successful programs. My point was that if they had to start their coaching careers in today’s social climate, they probably wouldn’t have been allowed enough time to get established.

As for beating Keppel, Alhambra will most likely win by a lopsided margin. But, we get it; it’s Keppel.
I hope for the day when a league championship in football, or at least a playoff berth, will be on the line for both teams when they meet.

You might benefit from a course in ethics. Have a nice life.

@ron the biggest problem with Eric is that he thinks he is still coaching college kids when Alhambra has kids that have never played football. Keep the scheme simple and let the kids play.

Principal Russell needs to see that Eric has not adjusted to the high school game. And maybe it’s time for eric to make some adjusts to the football program
And if can’t then maybe it’s time for a change.

@ Almont Guru: Your comments are generally on target.
Sean Aguilar (#55) anchors Alhambra’s defense at inside linebacker, and he’s been our leading tackler. The Araiza brothers, Dylan (#5) and Jared (#7), have generally played well at wide receiver, and they’ve been simply outstanding as kick returners.
Our tailback, Salman Gurung (#2), is a great athlete. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season, but he hasn’t gotten a lot of traction this year for a couple of reasons. First, we’re throwing the ball more—and doing it with some success. Second, our line play has regressed; Salman is not getting the blocks he did last season. (You got to see that for yourself on Friday night.)

AHS has a principal in Duane Russell who is highly supportive of the athletic program, including football. He was the head football coach at Mark Keppel High in the 1990’s, when the Aztecs actually won some games. Mr. Russell understands things from a coach’s perspective, and I’m sure he’s anxious to get the situation turned around.
Alhambra also has a dedicated and hardworking athletic director in Jerry DeSantis, who gives our teams all the support he can.
San Gabriel High has a dedicated athletic director named Keith Jones, who is a former head football coach there. However, I have no idea what’s going on with the school administration. I wish Coach Encinas the best of luck in rebuilding the Matadors’ program.

@ @ Oiler Grad: A comprehensive reorganization of the high school leagues in the San Gabriel Valley is long overdue.
Your proposed league might be viable, but the distance between the Glendale schools and those in the San Gabriel Valley could be a problem for some.
I’d suggest the following league: Mark Keppel, San Gabriel, Blair, Gabrielino, Marshall, and, perhaps, Mountain View or Sierra Vista.
The big problem is getting athletic directors, principals, and school boards to make such a radical break from their long-established leagues.

It’s not just the Almont League. Look at all the other scores on this page. There are a few close games and a few more watchable games, but about 80% of them were on the spectrum from convincing win to humiliation. It won’t happen, but probably ever league in the SGV needs to be scrapped, and an entirely new system put in place, if only just for football. I don’t think it is hyperbole to wonder if this would make the future of the sport a lot more secure at plenty of schools. Put the likes of San Gabriel, Mark Keppel, La Canada, Glendale, Hoover, and Marshall in one league, and every one of them would be better off – and everyone else as well.

I wish the Alhambra kids every shred of luck as they take on Keppel, a team that needs to taken just as seriously as the comments of Alhambra’s statistician. I obviously hope the squad has been uplifted by Vrooman’s invocation of John Wooden’s name in reference to their much-maligned coach, and that they too believe Bergstrom has it in him to emulate the Wizard of Westwood’s feats after only 10-15 years of losing. I personally salute Ron for this injection of hope into what might otherwise be considered a disintegrating program.

Time for a history lesson; what did Montebello do when they needed a new football coach – – they went after Pete Gonzalez (who was just let go by St. Paul) and got their man. What did Schurr do when they needed a new football coach – – the AD wanted Coach Ramos and he got his man. What did Bell Gardens do when they needed a new football coach – – they went after Coach Beltran (who was just let go from La Serna) and they got their man. All three programs are in the mix for both the playoffs and a Almont League title.
What did San Gabriel do when they needed a new football coach – – flew the position twice and WAITED for people to apply. Did they get their man, don’t know but he wasn’t hired until July. San Gabriel has guys, they had 3 offensive/defensive lineman over 6’1 and a LB who were legit.
Alhambra is not looking for a new coach but has some guys, I was at their game on Friday. #55, #5, and that Soloman kid are legit. Alhambra had no adjustments/plan on offense, they had a Kickoff return for a TD and a punt return that placed them in great position for another.
There are two things a high school needs to have a well run/winning football program, 1. an administration that knows what they want and is supportive 2. a head football coach that has a plan and understands what it takes to win as a program not just a year here and a year there but win consistently.
Hopefully Alhambra and San Gabriel get administrators that understand the importance of having a successful football program can bring to their campus as a whole!

Congrats to Santa Fe, that game was intense and I’m sure SF has nothing bad to say… they got the W … fair and square .. congrats to both teams as the boys left it all on the field .. that is a great rivalry … I think it even has the makings of being as big as the classics … mtb schurr, Arroyo SEM, etc and so on … for the most part , no matter the record of the teams … the game is always physical and intense! Comes down to wire…
sF deserves the Del Río crown this year, surviving the adversity before season , taking its licks o pre season …

Look at the facts all you ER haters!!! The Ranch is 2-plays away from being undefeated in the Del Río League! Don’t act like ER is getting manslaughtered … ER will still win the crappy League you belong too .. as will LS, SF, CAL , and whittier … … I’ll give you victory over Pioneer and that’s still being nice lol ..

    @knightKnight
Hahahah … sit down! Be Humble!!! Don’t forget ER punked Arroyo this year in our scrimmage ! Lol … only momentum you got was on our subs! You guys got so frustrated your boy even began to cheap shot and cry for penalty flags lol .. “p-I” , “late hit” .. lol just play! Then go push our players after whistle … your lucky medrano teaches this young men to be the bigger person bc if it was back in my day … I guarantee you would have had a helmet upside your ear hole and party started … but that’s the mentality before.. medrano is teaching this boys the right way … regardless… Knightknight – do as your name and just go night night

ER has no chance at League … SF is in driver seats … but we still have Playoffs! That’s the goal now ! Beat LS and get in Playoffs … LS will still be a good game ,
The Ranch still has my vote!
Stay true to your team fellas! Let the boys Enjoy their HS career .

I am a Montebello alumnus and former football coach at a couple local schools. For the past 3 or 4 years the Almont has been looked at as a garbage league because of the dominance of one program and the lack of playoff success by all the teams that qualify. Last year having Schurr and Montebello make runs in the playoffs and now having at least 3 dominant programs fighting it out should be seen as a great thing for this area and league. All 3 schools have good coaching staffs and are hard hitting, it can only improve the league as a whole. Good luck to Montebello, Schurr and Bell Gardens the last two weeks and the playoffs. Do this league and area proud!

The talent that the Wildcats have they can go places. But unfortunately with the current coaching staff they’re not going to go very far. Way too many internal problems that haven’t been resolved. The resolution to this problem is get rid of the coaching staff bringing a new head coach preferably younger with no ties to Monrovia, so they can stop living in the past and look to the Future and rebuild this program.

@ Anonymous: That’s exactly how it happened. It was a good game through three quarters, and then the Moors got crushed.
Two pass interceptions really hurt Alhambra; both were converted into TD’s by the Lancers which enabled them to go ahead, 27-21, late in the third quarter.
Bell Gardens has become the real deal again, or is very close. Coach Beltran and his staff deserve a lot of credit.
As I said before, anyone who disregards the Bell Gardens Lancers is making a big mistake.

@Jon F.B. I agree it was a dumb decision, the real question is when are they getting rid of Chou. No matter what talent you have without good leadership the team will go nowhere. Chou has destroyed the team morale. The whole staff needs to go, and bring in a new maybe even a younger coach with no ties to Monrovia with his own staff… Maybe then Monrovia cam begin to rebuild it’s self, instead of these tired coaches living in the past…
