The Peterson Principle: 10/22/2017

Tim Peterson

By Tim Peterson

We still have two weeks left in the regular season but it looks like everything is settled. Let’s take a league inventory:

The Almont was settled last week when Schurr beat Montebello. Bell Gardens fans may disagree, and I admire their loyalty, but the Lancers won’t beat the Spartans. Not this year. They’re on the verge but this year Schurr will win league. In fact the Spartans did last week at Montebello.

Santa Fe won the Del Rio Friday night with a win over El Rancho. The Chiefs set the tone with a huge victory over La Serna on October 6. The Chiefs are in.

The Hacienda race is over. Charter Oak will run the table. When the Chargers beat Diamond Ranch two weeks ago that was it. Everyone else has been just a pebble on the road that Charter Oak has kicked aside. Lou Farrar’s crew is waiting for their playoff assignment.

Pomona owns the Miramonte. La Puente was 2-0 in league before Friday night and Pomona beat the Warriors 42-0. The Red Devils are league champs.

Arroyo won the Mission Valley League crown with a 14-13 win over South El Monte October 6. The title was on the line that night and Arroyo secured it. Like Charter Oak, the Knights will also clear the table and go 10-0.

Burbank wrapped up the Pacific League Friday night with a win over previously undefeated Crescenta Valley. The Bulldogs have already beaten Arcadia, which sits in third. They’re not losing to Muir or Burroughs. You can bank on that. Congrats to first year HC Adam Colman on the Pacific championship.

Palomares League? Yeah it’s over. South Hills rallied past Glendora to win it Friday night. The Huskies have Bonita and Diamond Bar left. Raise the banner now.

San Marino will win the Rio Hondo. No, the Titans won’t lose to Monrovia. It will be confirmed this week when M-Town travels to San Marino. It’s settled already though. The Rio Hondo League belongs to the the Titans.

The San Gabriel Valley League has been decided as well. Paramount beat Downey 21-20 in overtime two weeks ago to win the title. The Pirates still had four games left at the time but everybody knew that was the title game. The Pirates have outscored their two opponents since then, Warren and Dominguez, by the combined score of 98-7.

The Suburban has been over since September 22 when Mayfair beat La Mirada. The Monsoons are your 2017 Suburban League champs.

The Valle Vista? Some think it’s up for grabs this Thursday when San Dimas travels to Covina District Field to face Northview. San Dimas lost to Covina, while Northview beat the Colts by two touchdowns. A possible three-way tie? Nah…it’s Northview’s league to lose and the Vikings aren’t about to lose it.

Okay, so not everything is etched in stone. Cathedral and St. Francis are headed for a showdown on November 3 for the Angelus league title. Nogales and Azusa, both 3-0 in the Montview, will also vie for the crown at Citrus College on November 3.

But for the most part it’s done. That’s a wrap! Can we start the playoffs now?

That’s my principle.

Tim, in the Pacific league both Arcadia and CV are 4-1 so how does that put Arcadia sitting in 3rd place?
From T. Peterson: In the standings Arcadia is in third place currently based on overall records. CV is 7-1 and Arcadia is 5-3.

People tend to forget Ramos beat Schurr in 2000 with Tovia Sala and Raymond Ochoa leading lancers.

2001, same thing BG beat Schurr.

2002, BG won and scored in the 50s.
2003 was the first time Schurr beat BG in a long time. Since then the tables were turned until 2012.

Bottom line, Schurr owns BG! Straight out! I might be off a year or two, but BG rarley beats Schurr. And Ramos has nothing to do with it.

    BGHS Coaches versus Schurr

    Ramos 1 win -11 losses
    Ackerman 0 wins – 3 losses
    Beltran 0 wins – 1 loss

So those touting Ramos being the savior of Schurr, ha ha! He only beat Schurr 1 time in 12 years as head coach!

I hate to put in on kids, anyone who has followed this specific senior class has always known that QB play was going to be our Achilles heel and boy has it been..

Any fan from ER who wants to blame Medrano you are a retard, All he has managed to do is change the culture of the program, increased numbers, get his players to leave it all on the field every game, a quarterfinal appearance his first year with 5 all cif players. Name another coach who has had that kind of success after a 1-9 season.. I dare you to.

Since you want to make excuses. The first year Ramos was at Schurr he had 9 sophomore starters and a bunch of kids who only had JV playing experience. BG had the better team by far and guess what Schurr beat BG! 20-17 final score. They didn’t get 68 hung up on them. Maybe the DC for Schurr was better than Beltran who knows. Just to let you know those 9 sophomore starters are the same ones put 68 up and I feel like they took it easy on BG last year. This year don’t they will take it easy with all the talk you guys are doing. Schurrs OC has no ties to BG and probably won’t feel bad about running up the score

Yes 68 on a very heavy 8 sophomores on defense and 7 on offense that year. Yes 68 on basically a JV squad. Yes you do have more talent at the skill positions and all around better team but we all know that when BG, Schurr, Montebello play each other records get thrown out. Hope for a good game and the team that wants it more will win. And Montebello you should cheer for BG we win this week and loose next week you guys can still share a league championship. Hey can we carpool with Ramos or #5 since they live in BG and are headed that way anyways.

    @Mr. Peterson,
You are absolutely right. We did not look good at all against San Marino. That was almost 5 weeks ago.
I do feel we have grown and have improved through out the year. I do believe a substantial amount of improvements can be made in 5 weeks. Especially with a coach like Mr. Beltran. By the way, I don’t think Schurr is better than San Marino.

I’m just saying that you can’t count us out that easily. Early in the year, we played well against El Rancho and Norwalk even though we lost. Our kids learned a lot from those games. A couple of less mistakes and we could be 7-1 right now. I know, should have or could have but we didn’t. But we did learn a lot from those games.

With our improvement over the last 8 weeks, the confidence our players have developed and with a few mistakes by Schurr (taking us lightly, dropped passes, turnovers, penalties, etc…), I would say we have a pretty good chance of upsetting them.

Again, Im not on hear to talk trash or predict a win, I’m just saying that we do have a pretty good chance of upsetting Schurr. Its going to be a closer game than you think.

I just though that you as a well respected sports analyst would have taken all that into account before you made your statement that the Almont League Championship has already been decided.

There are two more weeks to go sir.

@ Bank: Man, you’re relentless about twisting other people’s words to fit your agenda, which is to remove the football coaching staff at Alhambra High.
As I said in response to you on another MVS thread, I wasn’t comparing Coach Bergstrom to John Wooden.
What I actually did was to bring up two coaches who took quite some time to achieve greatness (in the case of John Wooden), or near-greatness (in the case of Coach Gil Ruedaflores at AHS). They wouldn’t have been given enough time in today’s world, where there is a much greater emphasis on instant gratification.
Coach Bergstrom is not John Wooden, but he is a capable individual in his own right. Two character traits that he happens to share with Coach Wooden are hard work and trying to keep things positive—even in what looks like a sea of negativity.
I believe you’re the one who’s in fantasyland if you think that Bergstrom is solely responsible for the problems affecting the football program at AHS. There are several issues in play which I’ve already discussed at some length.
An assessment is made about the state of the football program after the end of every season, and I’m sure that this year won’t be any different.
I agree with you about Coach Beltran. He was a proven winner at La Serna High, and he’s now instilling his winning methods at Bell Gardens. Beltran also has some very talented athletes at his disposal.
But, even Beltran has had his second-guessers and detractors. We certainly have no shortage of them in Alhambra.

Soooo. for the second week in a row special teams really hurt the Eagles. onside kicks and muffed punts. Eagles were down 21 points in the first quarter actually the first 5 minutes of the game. The kids regained control thanks to Sal Tovar who rushed for four Touchdowns and seemingly 500 yards . Frank Gallardo…. address your special teams before it ruins your season.
On another note, The Eagles are proving incapable of generating a pass game. The QB completed more passes to Rosemead than to his own team. Corners who played so well vs Arroyo played flat out awful vs Rosemead. with the griffin bowl coming the coaches have a lot to correct.

The battle between BG and Schurr is very much up in the air, but BG is going to beat Montebello. It’s no secret among knowledgeable fans that BG is rising fast, getting better not just for next year, but from week-to-week. If, as Vrooman has fantasized, John Wooden’s coaching abilities will someday burst from the bosom of Bergstrom, then we’ll have a challenger to Beltran. If not, Bell Gardens is the new La Serna, and who in the Almont could dream of besting that action?
