So, when the quarterback of a passing oriented offense of one of the top ten programs in the valley leaves school for a Continuation school, its news! There is no hiding the fact Ernesto Camacho is no longer an Arroyo student. So you like to comment on Eagle news, whats your opinion of your Qb situation? Also hear he was a no show at practice the entire week leading up to your quarterfinal game…any comments on that? Since were on the subject, there’s been horrendous rumors from Arroyo the last three years…whats going on there? Why are so many negative rumors hanging over Arroyo. At least Frank Gallardo and company do things the right way!

I can say emphatically and with the utmost confidence that yes what Coach Mooney did over 10 years ago can be a reason not to hire him. Harvard Westlake has no JV or Frosh Football Teams. The Students that go there are Rich and Their Parents are well to do. It costs $32,000 Per Year so a lot of kids cannot afford to go there. Also, Harvard Parents are not letting Their Kids play Football because of Concussions. That’s why they have a low turnout of kids for football.

Would be very interesting to see what administration would take a chance on Mooney. A public school administration would need to understand the heat that comes with that hire, and the parents would too. Not to many administrative teams out there that would be willing to risk their own jobs on that.

@ BT Bear: Most of the remarks you attributed to me were made by “Gordon Gekko” and several other commenters.
I did talk about Harvard-Westlake, in the context of Eric Sondheimer’s L.A. Times article about recruiting. (Sondheimer used Harvard-Westlake as an example of a private school which does not actively recruit athletes, as opposed to others that do.)
In addition, the gist of what I had to say about Mike Mooney is that he’s a great offensive coordinator who was largely responsible for South El Monte’s recent football success.
The only other thing I said about Mooney was in response to “Anonymous,” who was rooting for him to be hired as head coach at Alhambra (which I don’t believe is going to happen).
My opinion there was that Mooney would probably be better than Mr. Academic Fraud himself, Milvon James, who was being promoted for the AHS job by someone else. That’s all I said.

I’d agree with you that an 8-3 record, or something similar, is pretty good for a head football coach at Harvard-Westlake. That’s especially true when you consider the fact that he’s competing against the likes of Cathedral and St. Francis.
My question is, were the win-loss record and the failure to win the Angelus League title the only reasons for the coach’s dismissal? Were there any other factors involved?

    Now, back to Mike Mooney.
I was tempted to bring up his San Marino back story during the earlier discussion, but I passed on it because I don’t think he’ll be coming to Alhambra High. What happens at AHS is my first and foremost concern.
But, let’s talk about Mooney’s past, now that you’ve mentioned it.
After a reasonably successful tenure at Temple City High School, Mooney became head football coach at San Marino and was also hired as an assistant principal there.
Alluding to what “Gordon” said before, Mooney made progress in turning the Titans’ program around.

Perhaps you can ask Gordon for more information concerning the qualities of various younger coaches in the area. He probably has the background to discuss that topic knowledgeably, since he brought it up in the first place.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had the time to follow all of that, so I’m not going to venture any opinions.

@Mr Ron, Harvard-Westlake just fired a coach that went what 8-3. I would call that successful for the coach. Point being they have the same expectations for sorts teams, they just hold to their academic standards. As for the talk about Mooney, really? I’m going there. How about asking why he is no longer the coach reaping the rewards at San Marino? Huh? And please throw out some of the names of the young coaches in the area and their schools. Let’s discuss them.

@ Gordon: We are long overdue for a comprehensive realignment of the high school leagues in the San Gabriel Valley, especially when it comes to football. But, at this point, I’m not sure whether it will ever happen.

We’ve had occasional discussions here about public schools that have played the recruiting game, such as Corona Centennial, Downey, La Mirada, Charter Oak, Buena Park, Arcadia, and Monrovia. And, there are other schools that do it to some degree. It’s this activity on the public side that I’d like to see stopped or greatly reduced.

In his recent article in the L.A. Times, Eric Sondheimer cited Harvard-Westlake as one private high school that has remained reasonably competitive in sports without conducting a major recruiting effort. That’s a pretty good accomplishment, considering the fact that Harvard-Westlake is in the same league with Cathedral and St. Francis.

  29. Gordon Gekko's Gravatar Gordon Gekko
    January 20, 2018 - 9:55 pm | Permalink

@ Ron you’ve made some good points about recruiting. There are public schools that are competing on the same level as some private schools. They’re not local public schools but they’re out there making moves on same high caliber kids as some private schools do.

In the SGV public schools recruit as aggressive as those that are private. Some public school coaches are jealous and want to whine because they can’t attract the better talent. And not every private school recruits like the major powers MD or SJB. Some private schools have done a great job attracting good players beacuse they have a tradition, good coaches and academics.

There’s no formula to create equality. Realignment of teams is the only option. CIF can’t prevent families from having freedom of choice. This is America. Coaches, administrations and boosters have to help their schools program together if they want to have a competitive football program. It’s too bad when people can’t work together it only hurts the program and the players.

@ Gordon: That brings to mind the case of Kameron Johnson, who transferred from Monrovia to Cathedral in 2015.
Johnson was part of a three-back rotation at Monrovia when he was a junior in 2014, and he was in position to become the number-two guy behind Lawrence Spicer the following season.
Spicer did return for his senior year at Monrovia, rushing for 1,304 yards and 13 touchdowns. The next-leading rusher for the Wildcats gained less than 300 yards in 2015, and I’m willing to guess that Johnson would’ve done far better than that had he stayed at Monrovia.
Instead, Johnson went to Cathedral High, where he averaged just six carries and one pass reception per game.
Perhaps no one at Cathedral told Johnson that he would have to share the ball with Marcos Lopez, another good running back who transferred from South El Monte at about the same time.
Lopez also averaged only six carries at Cathedral, but he at least managed three catches a game in the Phantoms’ pass-oriented offense.
My question has always been, why would Johnson want to leave a Monrovia team that went 10-2 his junior year? In contrast, Lopez left a South El Monte squad that went 3-7 in 2014 and was undergoing a coaching change.

We have to end the transfermania and player-poaching which have made a travesty of amateur sports at the high-school level.
Put the private schools in totally separate leagues and playoff divisions, and let them hold tryouts for prospective 9th-grade student-athletes. (Who would, in theory, be the “cream of the crop.”)
If the private schools want to run what are essentially semi-professional sports operations, then let’s allow them to do that.
In the meantime, the athletic programs at public high schools, which are largely taxpayer-supported, should be subject to enforceable attendance boundaries.
Athletic transfers between public schools should be kept to an absolute minimum, except in cases where an athlete’s family physically moves from one school’s attendance area to another. And, even then, we should be careful to see whether there are any potential money trails or other inducements involved.
Public schools can—and should be—held to a higher standard.

@ Ron Mooney still has a lot of allies that would more than help him at Monrovia. MM would put a good staff together. Good coaches attract talent.

MM is a solid coach. But, there are a ton of young, quality coaches who are 35-45 years old are out there too. They just need their chance. It’s more competitive than ever to be a football coach. The older coaches in the area know it. Besides most of the older coaches dislike today’s landscape of high school football. The old coaches love their cushy jobs and camp money. Most have small town major complexes.

MM should land on his feet.

Most people don’t know it but San Marino HS success was based off what MM started. Not to take away from San Marino’s current coach’s success and prowess but, he did walk into a program that was ready to go. All he had to do was turn the key.

Monrovia select wisely. You could return to prominence if you do and rule the Rio.

Regarding #2: How many times have successful operations come to an end because of “philosophical” or “creative” differences?
Coach Mooney’s offensive system, and the players who ran it, were probably the most important factors in South El Monte’s 22-4 run during the last two seasons.
Unfortunately, it seems that even overwhelming success doesn’t always guarantee that everything will turn out great.
It will be interesting to see where Coach Mooney ends up. I’m also curious as to what impact Mooney’s departure will have on South El Monte’s program.

Mooney’s philosophy distilled to “I think, therefore I’m better than Gallardo”….whereas Gallardo’s dictum was “I’m the head coach, therefore I get all the credit.” This is the eternal conundrum.

  49. January 19, 2018 - 9:05 am | Permalink

Mooney and Gallardo split because of “philosophical” differences? Do these guys really think we cant read between the lines here??? Philosophically South El Monte was not only winning football games but dominating games. In 2 seasons, they racked up 22 wins with 2 semi final appearances. They crushed a lot of school records, philosophically they were kicking tails! So what gives here? Does Frank Gallardo have complaints about the offense? if so what could they possibly be? Something isn’t being said here. Maybe Mooney’s shadow was getting too big. Why hasn’t Gallardo fired his defensive coordinator? that was the Achilles heel of the Eagles. i.e the rosemead game.
Mooney isn’t being completely honest with his response something is missing between the lines. Didn’t Gallardo also fire his strength coach mid-season? Remember folks this is Gallardos first stint as a head coach and it smells a lot like coaching sensitivity…Franks first O.C was also fired midseason what was the reason for that firing? The strength coach was very popular with the kids and poof, hes gone. Mike was or is extremely popular with the kids and poof all of a sudden theres a “philosophical” difference? haha good one guys, now lets hear the real story. Sounds like Frank Gallardo has a problem with any coach who is popular with the kids. is Wilhans Ili next? who is replacing Mooney? does he even have a guy yet?
From T. Peterson: Mooney said philosophical differences. Gallardo said philosophical differences. That’s what we go with. That’s where it stands.
