(El Monte) – Emilio Alvarez scored 21 points to lead Mt. View to a 70-61 win over Gabrielino Friday night in the regular season finale at home.
The Vikings had already wrapped up the Mission Valley league title going in but cemented it with the win over the Eagles finishing 11-1 in league.
It was an emotional win for Alvarez and the Vikings. Alvarez’ mom passed away Friday morning and he addressed the fans before the game thanking them for all of their support. Then he went out and led both teams in scoring.

Mt. View led by only two at the half at 32-30. Alvarez had just six points in the first half. Francisco S had 17 of his 19 total in the first half for the Vikings including 13 of 15 from the free throw line.
The Vikings finally pulled away from the Eagles late in the third quarter going on a 9-0 run that spanned into the fourth quarter to go up 53-40. Gabrielino pulled to within six in the final frame but Mt. View went on another quick 9-3 spurt to go back up by 12 and put it away.
Alvarez 15 points in the second and hit two from beyond the arc. Edgar Hernandez joined Francisco S and Alvarez in double figures with 16.
Three players did the bulk of the scoring for Gabrielino combing for 51 of the 61 points. Aaron Van led the way with 20. Van tried to keep the Eagles in the game in the fourth quarter with 11 points as he hit five for five from the line. Warren Phan had 18 and Noah Kim added 13.
Mt. View finished 16-12 overall and will open the playoffs next week at home against an opponent to be determined Sunday. Gabrielino finished 8-14 overall and 5-7 in the MVL.

It’s 2018 and transfers have been a thing for a while now and it’s not gonna change any time soon. So get with the program or you’re gonna be left behind.
CIF also doesnt want lower teams to bring in transfers every year and think they are going to stay in a lower division until they finally win CIF.
Congrates Vikings! Good Luck! Any clue why you went up from 5AA to 4A? Thats up 4 levels for the playoffs. I guess the CIF doesn’t want a lower team to much success, unless they are a private school or Arroyo!
