Everybody’s returning to their roots. Josh Knight is back at Baldwin Park, Travis Brown has returned to Los Altos and Riley Saxon came back as the HC at Temple City last year. Now If I can just get Singiser out at Arroyo I can make my coaching debut at the old alma mater.
No, C.J. Martinez wasn’t the name I was hearing for Cantwell. Truth is, I don’t know C.J. Martinez from J.D. Martinez. Who was I hearing? Y0u know the usual suspects – Jude Oliva, Pete Gonzalez, Hector Spathias, etc. Isn’t Oliva mentioned every time there’s a head coaching opening? And isn’t Gonzalez mentioned every time there’s an opening at Cantwell? Spathias? Well I didn’t really hear him mentioned as a serious candidate for Cantwell but with him being ousted as the Conquerors HC his name will be thrown around early and often now.
What’s his latest destination? What’s the hot stove rumor for Spathias? Bassett.
Speaking of Jim Singiser it doesn’t look like I’ll be wearing the headset for the Knights anytime soon. He’s not going anywhere. He’s back from surgery and already out on the field. “1st full day back with the team. Had a blast. We improved a lot. Found some depth. Great day! And man am I paying for it. The mind was willing, the body, not so much. Gotta call my doc and ask him if he left a scalpel inside me by mistake. I’m hurting. Nap time!” Singiser tweeted last Saturday.
Speaking of ex Los Altos head coaches Dale Ziola is in the mix for the head coaching job at Nogales. It wouldn’t be a bad gig. The Nobles are back on the map after going 10-2 last year and falling to Silver Valley in the second round of the Division 13 playoffs. It used to be when you thought of Nogales you thought rebuilding project. But Richard Salazar did a solid job of establishing a winning culture before bolting for greener pastures. Ziola, who took the Conquerors to the CIF Finals twice only to fall short, could get the Nobles over the hump.
“I have to be offered the job before I could take the job, and that has not happened,” Ziola said Monday night.
Northview has already found a new offensive coordinator. Anthony Silva, who has been on Marcel Perez’ staff for the last four years, and was in the box with former OC Chris Williams, will take over as the new OC. Silva also served as Steven Comstock’s quarterback coach. Brown was signed, sealed and delivered as OC before deciding to take over at his alma mater. Brown was tabbed to replace Chris Williams who left to take the HC job at Monrovia, but now Silva will step in.
Couple of scheduling notes: The Hall of Fame Game, originally scheduled for Los Altos, will take place Friday night, May 11 at Schurr. The Schurr coaching staff – David Ramos, Eric Elias, Jude Oliva, Carlos Arredondo and company will coach the South squad. Adam Colman of Burbank will be the HC for the North.
The Charter Oak passing Tournament is set for Saturday May 19.

Why doesn’t Cleveland take Saquon Barkley with the number one pick? By all of the “experts” accounts, there’s not much of a separation between the top three quarterbacks listed and the Browns can still get a quarterback at number four. Can you imagine getting Barkley and Sam Darnold? Or Josh Rosen? Or Josh Allen? It’s a win, win.

All year I’ve been bored to tears with the NBA but now I admit I’m all in on the playoffs. Anybody up for a Pelicans- Sixers finals? I don’t know if LeBron James will end up in LA but there’s one place he won’t be – Cleveland.
**
NHL Playoffs? Nah! I went down with the Kings.
**
Remember when the Angels were red hot and the Dodgers were the scrubs of the league? Going into Tuesday night’s action the Dodgers have lost…wait for it…two more games than the Angels. That being said I’m still not convinced that Kenley Jansen is okay…

Back to high school football for one last thing: Keith Richardson is out at Pomona. He’s been out. But who’s in? Anybody know?
That’s my principle.

No one from this area is going to play college football, if they do it might be at a JC and that’s all she wrote… so funny these youth parents over here talking about sending their kids to Amat bosco etc thinking 5’8 mijo is going to do anything. Just send them to their home school and let them finish it out with their friends… the sooner our Hispanic parents realize their kid isn’t made to play D-1 or the nfl the better for their kid. I’ve said these words 100 times “I told you so” but the parents continue to make the same mistake it’s a vicious cycle.
What I’m about to say might not be popular or P.C, but it’s the truth. A couple people are talking back and forth about what school is sending what players to the next level and what teams are winning CIF.
The fans talking about that are from BG, Schurr, Montebello, and ER, etc. These are all schools that are well over 90% Latino if not 100%. If you look at any Div 1, or Div 2 college roster, you will only see a handful of Latino last names if any. This makes the argument of what school is sending who to colleges completely moot. As bad as it sounds, college recruiters are looking for African-Americans, Caucasians, and Polynesians. The Midvalley coverage area is made up of mostly Latinos and Asians. I’m not saying they’re not good football players, I’m not saying they’re not great kids, but college football coaches are not looking for them unless they are out of this world like the Baldwin Park OL that is at UCLA. For every 1 Latino football player who gets an opportunity, there are about 10 who get passed over.
The same can be said for CIF Champions. Unless you’re in a division that is made up of other Latinos, there’s a good chance you won’t win a CIF title. Arroyo won D-12, a lower division title with an all Latino team but the other CIF champions, even Div 13 champ Orange, are getting the help of a more diverse population.
Those coaches you mentioned are the biggest snakes. They go around the Area brown nosing parents and players, they “train” them out of the goodness of their heart with no obligations but realistically are doing It so they can get in the kids ear about playing for them, sure enough the kids go back to their high school team feeling entitled because they felt so great with their air r team, their HS coach snaps back and the kids end up saying hey I’ll go play for my air r coaches f this, beautiful how that works right? If these coaches were any good they would play with their local kids, but nope they aren’t trying to build by coaching up they are trying to build by recruiting.
@BG
Well put and those are straight facts. If a kid works out with other coaches, you bet those coaches at some point have tried talking to that kid about coming over. Pete Gonzalez is a cry baby and thats a fact. Shady as hell and loves to cry about the same things he does (RECRUITING). As for those two other coaches……..Ive heard of them recruiting but they are not crying about what others are doing. Keep your kids training at your school or they will end up somewhere else.
oiler football has been irrelevant since the school started a football program. Not one class of OILERS has ever been able to call themselves CIF Champs. You had your chance two years ago and guess what you BLEW IT. Stay competitive MHS because you’re still not relevant.
@rules are rules it is sad but this is the way the game is going. If CIF isn’t going to hold Mater Dei, St John Bosco, Corona Centennial, even Buena Park accountable they sure as hell aren’t going to do anything bout a nobody like Schurr. With the way the rules are now with people being able to transfer now and it can be athletically motivated it a free for all. Good luck to all teams cause its a dog eat dog world. If you don’t protect your kids they will be eaten up by guys like Oliva, Elias, and Pete Gonzales. Everyone forgets about him because when does it wants everyone not to say something but when someone else does it he cries about it. Everyone forgets about the players that transferred the last couple years like the last two quarterbacks he had. Also both running backs Rodriguez and Vital. Both who were at other schools before going to Montebello. So to end this don’t let your kids train with anyone else so the snakes don’t bite them.
@Geeeez
I’m not a MHS coach. Yes I have heard about the player from MHS apparently going to Schurr. I do believe he plays on that team? Anyhow my connection is from Cantwell. I think its wrong that just because we got a new coach a bunch of players are bailing out! No secret they are all talking about going to Schurr? Why? Most of them play on the Air Raid team! Ron you are right. CIF should enforce rules that are in place? I do know a phone call goes along way! You just got to make it! Just ask Noodles who a few years ago forfeited his entire Senior season? Don’t think its worth it. My son is going to stay put at Cantwell wish his so called brothers would do the same?
Local idiot?
Please tell me how Pete can create a class? You must be the stupidest of all time. As for KRod, great Kid no doubt. Does Coach have to hold an 18 year Kid by the hand to walk him to class? That’s the reason right there he will not be playing at a University…Accountably ….As for kids moving on, another stupid comment. Kids definitely move on but not to play football. It’s just the way it is. We have great kids that top out at the HS level. You must be one of those Park coaches that think your kids are going to win the Heisman. Guess what? It’s not up to coaches to decide if someone getting a scholarship. It’s up to the University. Plain and simple! So as for you, basically you’re a clown and you have no common sense about anything. Go back and start cleaning up aisle 8 at Walmart. Clown….
Get off the blogs MHS freshman coach.
HERE, HERE….WELL DONE.!!
Based on all the player transfers we’ve seen in recent years, one could swear that the CIF bylaws provisions mentioned by “Rules are Rules” no longer exist. An organization that fails to enforce its own rules has no credibility, in my view.
My comment to the CIF Southern Section is to either enforce these rules or repeal them. The lack of enforcement, or inconsistent enforcement, has made a travesty of high school athletics.
Which team did schurr h.s. beat last year that was any good? They beat a bunch of nobodies and got exposed in the playoffs
is that why they forfeited the game to bell gardens cuz they followed the rules… K rod quit cuz the coaches did give two craps about his grades and only cared about beating schurr last year. get off your high horse! pete has the worse accountability of all school in the area. he made up a class just to get kids eligible for football season just to turn their backs after season end. ASK your kids you moron! hahah how many kids get out to 4 year colleges from Montbello to play football???????????? exactly!!!!
Schurr Faithful?
All you guys do is talk smack! Schurr has been irrelevant for the last six years with the exception of last year. Some of the comments regarding your staff are hilarious. I do think they are very good football coaches but in no way shape or form exceptional. I would take our staff everyday of the week. No disrespect to your staff. I just feel the kids we have get way better coaching and get the max effort on every play. Your kids IMO watch too much tv and think it’s ok to show boat and talk smack. Just a bad example of leadership. Since Gonzalez has been at MHS we never see that. Every kid is treated the same and have accountability. Perfect example last year with last years key players. Gonzalez doesn’t try to win at all costs. The kids have to live by the rules or no playing time.
Oiler football no rings, all talk. Guys worry about your program please. Rivalry week do all your talking, all this shows is your concern about what’s going on up on the hill. You’ll see come game day. If you win, you win, if you lose well you lose. It’s all about the kids.
@ Rules are Rules, so are you saying these rules do not apply to all the kids that have left The Hill over the last few years to go to MHS? Becareful where you point your finger coach!
Jude Oliva= king of the screens win, lose or draw screen. Screen all day every day lol. Talk about over hyped!
…the excuses are starting early this year! Lol! How bout we let things play out shall we say? …SPARTANS, SPARTANS, SPARTANS…
All of you who are excited over all the possibilities of your AIR RAID team at Schurr might want to think twice about it?
(10) Athletically Motivated Valid Change of Residence
If a student completes a valid change of residence as provided in Bylaw 206.C.(1-5), a student may not be eligible to
participate at the varsity level if there is evidence the move was athletically motivated or the student enrolled in
that school in whole or in part for athletic reasons (See Bylaw 200; 510.B.-G.)
Question: What is meant by an athletically motivated move or transfer?
Answer: Based on the CIF philosophy that the “student attend school to receive an education first; athletic participation is secondary” [Bylaw
200.A.(2)], individual Section Offices may limit eligibility for a student when there is evidence the transfer, or move is made to
acquire athletic participation at School B. Such evidence of an athletically motivated move may be, but is not limited to:
• Transferring to a School after Participating on a Non-School Athletic Team, Camp or Clinic Associated with the School
• Transferring to a School Where a Former High School Coach has Relocated
• A demonstrated move or transfer that is prompted by association with club programs or outside agencies that use the facilities
of the new school.
• Evidence that multiple students have transferred or changed schools to participate in a particular sports program at one (1)
school.

@Sparta
Facts are Jude lost to Mtb 2010, Won 2011, lost 2012. Those are facts buddy! Oh ya he left after 2012 season DELETED. Those are facts: Claimed he couldn’t get a teaching job but the fact is he did not have a California Teaching Credential? That is a Fact! BTW Mr. Sparta you can look up teachers credentials and see when they are cleared? That is a fact!
@oiler
Why are you at Schurr watching practice?!? Oliva and Elias I believe have a winning record vs your buddy Pete. Nice try buddy!
@spartan alumni your kidding right you beat him once in how many years and i have to take notes back to him? With your best team you barely beat him. Ramos, Oliva, Elias and everyone else are not on the same level as him as a coach!
@oiler
you saw practice last night? take any notes back to Pete? you either have a kid playing on the All Star team, thinking of having your kid transfer to schurr, or think your track and field is crack so you use ours. hahaha either way you keep creeping and stay worried… you know as well as i do that theres good reason to be.
It’s Dave Ramos M.O. UNDER ACHIEVE in the playoffs. Same story new place
BG has the horses and I think early favorite to win league. 90% of their team is coming back who does Shurr or Montebello have one maybe two good players. 70% of the BG team have been starters since their sophomore year. But you still have to play the game.
Lol… they did not reload… they found 1 bullet…
They return most of their team, the rest of the almont lost most of their team.
You mean in the scrimmage? Lol that’s funny how you think a scrimmage is telling of something. The last time played in a real games was 2009 and Schurr won the first round of playoffs. Get your facts straight
Spartans reload is a joke! You might have had your best class ever come through your school and you guys choke. Saw the team yesterday and they look horrible.
@ER
BG will be better but I’m sorry they don’t have the horses. All teams will see each other shortly once the passing circuit hits full swing.
Every year Schurr is going to be loaded and every year they are going to under achieve and lose in the 1st or 2nd round. At some point the people will revolt against the coaches; if you are not going to try and win with your home grown kids at some point the parents/school will turn on you.
Heard the same thing about Schurr being loaded. Hear it’s CIF or bust!
Why? Because the Lower the division are less important than the higher divisions? Lol pure moronic!
There’s only so many SJBs and MDs get a clue joker
…the Spartans just reloaded! …the oil well is dry…gonna be a good year on top of the hill!
BG will win the almont.
Idk they did win a DRL league title in 2014 over Perrenial power La Serna, they also happened to win a D9 playoff game over Norwalk in 2016. Isnt that the same boat Schurr was in during 2017? I know the name of the game is let’s discredit the ranch since we’re trying to steal Pico Rivera kids, you know who I’m talking about. Let’s see how y’all fare with your pitiful lower level teams, let me guess y’all getting transfers right? Remember the last time we lined it up ER toyed with Sparta.
MVS needs to highlight comments in RED concerning any program playing in D11 or worse. That way, serious fans can spend their valuable time more efficiently on this site. I’m not saying these comments should be banned, because Lord knows they have comic value, but some kind of gatekeeping is in order.
@ Areadad
If warren doesn’t win this season something is wrong. RL, has got to deliver and fast! Downey just keeps on rolling year after year.
Can SEM keep it rolling? It will be tough just ask Los Altos how it is to replace 90% of your offense. The thing I would question is why fire Mike Mooney! And who replaces him.
Bell Gardens
Will be much better year 3 this is the money year for any coach worth his salt. In my opinion, BG is will make a run this year
@Sparta
I don’t mean to defend El Rancho, but isn’t Schurr in the same boat as ER? I mean both those shouldn’t say until they win something. Last year Schurr entered D12 as the 1 seed and got beat by Santa Maria. Now, both Schurr and Santa Maria should never be in D12. Any school with 3,000+ kids should be in D10 minimum. But that being said they underachieved.
why is even Gonzales being talked about… hes under achieved so much at Montebello, and i hear hes in a real scramble mode with talks of some of his best players transferring to others schools. He took advantage of the Almont league being so down, he monopolized the talent but doesn’t seem to have that going for him anymore. THE OIL WELL LOOKS DRY!!!!
@wow
Coming off two pretty good season (7-3)(9-1 )with a league championship with 4 kids playing college ball, and no not at one of the JCs!
I think we’ve been quiet but I’m sure it’s because we let our play do the talking these days! There is a reason Montebello stays quiet, El Rancho? Who are they!? Call me when they do something!
Passing Leagues are already starting, this Saturday at South El Monte will be Warren, La Puente and Bell Gardens. Can South El Monte continue their run, will Warren at least make it to the playoffs (recruiting like crazy the last two years), and will Bell Gardens continue to improve (everybody coming back). Should be fun this Saturday, I might just drive out to South El Monte High School and watch.
Schurr people have been very quiet, they know that staff underachieved last year in the playoffs with the group of athletes they had.
If there is a scalpel in Jim’s bowel, maybe Peterson put it there. Hospital room video shows the image of a clumsy guy with a CIF credential and a tray of sharps suspiciously close to the patient in question. The things some guys will do to get their day in the sun…
what buzz are you talking about ? schurr fans have been relatively quiet along with Oiler fans. Maybe El Ranchos staff is what your talking about
alot of buzz around the area about those hill toppers… im very interested how the staff does this year.
Glenn Gates former South East High coach is in at Pomona… Also Bassett’s coach will be board approved today
The bill would not end youth football in California. It, among other things, says that a child must be at least 12 years of age of play tackle football: the bill “would prohibit any person who is not at least 12 years of age from playing tackle football with a youth sports organization”.
TP. What is you feeling on the bill to end youth football in California? I feel it will really hurt high school programs.
Tim Tim Tim, way to get everyone’s head back into Football! Going to be a great season and good luck to all SGV teams.
