The Peterson Principle: 7/4/2018

Tim Peterson

By Tim Peterson

Transfers don’t really bother me anymore. I’ll admit they used to back in the day. It was kind of disheartening to see a kid have a big year at Monrovia one season and then wearing a Cathedral uniform the next.

But I think now I’ve become immune to it. Transfers are happening more now than ever before. A player isn’t happy for one reason or another, whether it’s a perceived slight by a coach, or not enough playing time, and the next thing you now he’s packing his bags. Coaches care to a certain point, but let’s face it, if a kid doesn’t want to be there then why would you want him? CIF doesn’t really care and the penalties are now slim if any at all. And of course for the private schools, it’s a field day at every passing tournament that comes along.

So transfer all you want. The more the merrier. Judging by their comments on the boards Schurr and Montebello fans disagree. They are passionate about the evils of transfers. “Poaching” has become their favorite term. By the way can a player really be “poached”? Ultimately the decision to transfer is the kid’s alone. Last I checked they weren’t being kidnapped and threatened to play for a certain school. I understand the rivalry between the two schools. Everybody wants to win, but the whining about transfers is really getting old. I had to start deleting the comments because they were getting personal or frankly I just got tired of reading them. So going forward comment about transfers at your own risk. They may or may not make the cut.

That being said it was funny to see A.J. Carreon playing quarterback for South El Monte at the El Rancho Tournament and then for Monrovia at the Bonita Air Assault two weeks later. It didn’t bug me but it just kind of highlighted how prevalent transfers are now and how quickly they happen. What was really ironic was that Carreon started at Monrovia and then transferred to South last year. Now he’s back in M-Town. Passing tournaments aren’t CIF sanctioned so there is nothing they can look into. South El Monte head coach Frank Gallardo confirmed that Carreon had indeed left the school for Monrovia. Stay tuned…

Nice to see that Covina quarterback Nin Burns II is staying put. Rumors had him going everywhere from South Hills to Charter Oak to the LA Chargers. Well maybe the Chargers were a longshot.

**

The SGV Shootout at Arroyo is scheduled for this Saturday. It’s the last big passing event of the summer, especially with the season kicking off August 16 this year. Monrovia and South El Monte are in the same pool…that should be interesting. Who’s the favorite? I’ll take Arcadia. I heard they have a lot of transfers.

If you do plan on attending the Shootout you might want to bring some water and throw on your favorite hat. It’s supposed to be 107 degrees…in the shade.

**

The next time there’s a linemen competition can we just stay with the SGV schools and leave Upland at home? There’s something in the water out there. Those guys are from a different planet.

**

I liked what Magic Johnson did in getting LeBron James but how did he miss on Boogie Cousins? The word is he’s a cancer in the locker room and nobody wants to play with him. But at 5 million bucks and one year, who cares? If he doesn’t work out then don’t re-sign him. No harm done. The Lakers need a center. JaVale McGee is more famous for starring on “Shaqtin a fool” than for what he does on the court. Plus if LeBron told Cousins to shut up and play I think he would shut up and play. Let’s hope Magic has the Spurs GM R.C. Buford on speed dial in an attempt to land Kawhi Leonard.

**

Max Muncy is this year’s Cody Bellinger.

**

That’s my principle.

Since mr. Anonymous asked yesterday for information from mr. Peterson about covina high school’s prospects for this year, I will second the motion. I noticed that CalPreps predicts Covina will have a perfect season, with 68% as an estimate of those chances, though the coach has not been contacted and the final estimate therefore remained incomplete.

I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE RUBBED A READER OF A DIFFERENT RACE THE WRONG WAY. BUT AT LEAST IN THIS FORM OF COMMUNICATION THE PROBLEM CAN BE RESOLVED WITHOUT VERBAL INSULTS, SINCE MOST OF THE BLOGGERS ON THIS WEBSITE ARE ADULTS WHO SHOULD BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE IN A RATIONALE MANNER. I ATTENDED A SCHOOL IN PASADENA A COUPLE OF YEARS AFTER DESEGREGATION. I REMEMBER TAKING OVER A DESK AT THE START OF THE SECOND SEMESTER WHERE A YOUNG BLACK BOY HAD BEEN HAVING TROUBLE LEARNING TO WRITE, AND SOON MY PENMANSHIP BEGAN TO SUFFER BECAUSE OF DEEP MARKS INDENTED IN THE WOOD OVER THE PREVIOUS 20 OR 30 YEARS. THANK GOD THEY WERE REPLACED THE NEXT YEAR. IT MAY TAKE LONGER TO CHANGE SOME OF THE ATTITUDES THAT CAN MAKE US ANGRY, BUT THE KIDS SEEM TO BE AHEAD OF THE ADULTS ON THIS ONE.

Arcadia has brought in a lot rom Pasadena & the IE to participate this season. They must of figured out like the Great Bear Bryant (USC VS ALABAMA) if we can beat um, join um. I hope they realize that this won’t go on for long because Arcadia was the last team standing the SGV. Having a great passing game doesn’t always equate to a great season. A running game is definitely required in this sport to continue play in late Nov. early Dec.

You guys crack me up. You sound like a bunch of Al Bundy’s Brotha’s have always been used to described many of black men in terms of simple ebonics. Plantation was used to described to bring back memories of when we were free and were told to go fetch a living on our own and later begged to come back to a place where lynchings were the way of the times. I’ts quite unfortunate that a lot of the Pasadena Schools have lost their way due to social changes and other reasons causing their schools to become barren. John Muir was the staple of top notch athletics in not only the SGV but in the entire state of Ca. If you are old school and know what Arcadia would use to describe the Mustangs you would really get where I am coming from with this. But I can’t apologize to those who really have no clue. Has nothing to do with prejudice on my behalf more to do with shock. I’ve been on these blogs as long as perhaps anyone who still chooses to talk about the real issues in sports in the SGV and this is nowhere near the racists rants that I have observed. I felt the turning point was to see a subculture of athletes led by guys who are probably really looking out for their best interest being mazed over to a community not know to accept people of color at one time. Now that it has become mostly Asian the few die hard Arcadians want to bring back what they have been lacking for some time and thats competitiveness. I think this is one of the few mature conversations we have had in a while based on todays state of affairs.

The only acceptable way “brothas” would have been used is if you were referring to two or more siblings that had transferred. Other than that you need to look in the mirror and realize what you said was in fact racist.

Maybe you should really get your verbiage right when it comes to these types of inflammatory responses. As the person I am I have chosen to use these analogies to describe what I am seeing in terms of high school football in the SGV. My experiences of racism are far greater than most of you who write about subjects you aren’t really familiar with. Just for future reference I will leave Plantation out of the conversation but I saw a direct connection in this overhaul of Arcadia and it made me wonder.
Here is the definition of Racist
showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or believing that a particular race is superior to another.

Definition of bigot. : a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (such as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance.
I love all people, back in that day and I’m not talking long ago if you were African American you would be stopped and assaulted and told to go back to where you came from better yet they would actually drive you out of the area just to appease the residence in that community.. Get to know your history my friend, Sure things have changed but I do recall when fans were calling for the firing of their coach because of the huge influx of Asians. Now, Who’s the Bigot?

By the way how’s your team? any transfers Mr. Burbank? I have always and will always have the upmost respect for Tim Peterson for the guy he is and if what I put down is something that he felt may have offended some I would definitely agree with his decisions. You on the other hand, most of your comments are pure GARBAGE written in all CAPS, go get that problem fixed and maybe we can have a real conversation about high school football, until then “Change that diaper and put your pacifier back in your mouth or wherever you put it.

It is very easy to influence a kid. It is never the kid that makes the jump. It is always the parent or guardian. You smile at the parent, you say their son has a ton of potential and wish him well, you pat the boy on their head, you give them your cellphone number in case they would ever like to talk about the weather and voila the mom is asking about how you go about transfering. Most HC’s dont go out of their way to coddle their key players so if you are a soccer mom that want’s her baby to be treated special and that nice HC that seems to genuinely like your son, well you have a receiver strong safety. It is easy peasy that is why the same programs get transfers over and over. They cultivate the soil every day then reap the fruit. It does not just happen. However most HC’s DO NOT do this.

Don’t think the Schurr coaches can offer that……. or would even offer any of that.
I’m confident in saying that the program must have something that’s attracting kids to the school. I use to complain a about school that constantly had talent coming in and why they went there. Mostly it’s because there is something that attracted a kids attention and it carries over to the parent. A coach can say this and that at the end of the day it’s the kid and parent that make the decision to come. Everyone misses that event they talk about recruiting. A kid cannot check himself out and into another school.

    Ron,
It’s interesting how you continue to comment about transfers and the integrity of Alhambra’s program. The reality is that Alhambra was on the cutting edge of transfers back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Now that Alhambra has “changed” its culture doesn’t let Alhambra off the hook. Pandora’s box was opened with Zion, Colbert, Smith, and company.

    1) Transfers are a fair game all the way around. Coaches leave when a better or perceived better situation arise. Administration fires coaches who makes the playoff in a rebuilding year in favor of hiring their friends. There is definitely no crying in football.
    2) I agree with you on Cousins. There must have been an ageeement that if LaBron signs than we would resign KCP. Otherwise, for two million dollars more, I would rather have Randle and Cousins.
    3) SGV varsity football is like freshmen and JV football in many other CIF-SS leagues.

From T. Peterson: Right but a lot of them took personal shots at kids and called coaches character into question. They’ve called coaches despicable names and said they have no integrity. Sorry, I’m not having it.
