The Peterson Principle: 8/13/2018

San Dimas O-Line: TE-Nick Sloan, Tackles- John Egan, Fadi Zaki, Guards- Chris Diaz, Fred Salazar, C- Nico Guerra

By Tim Peterson

The high school football season kicks off Thursday night. Don’t forget your peanuts, popcorn and…sunscreen. That’s right, sunscreen. With opening night moved up two weeks temperatures will be in the nineties when the ball is teed up.

It’s one thing to run around in near triple digit heat in shirts and shorts but in full helmet and pads? Is it really that important to get all of those State bowl games in by the first week in December? What’s next? A fourth of July picnic in Zero Week? I was fine with Labor Day weekend marking the season opening kick off. Why is it necessary get underway in mid August? Anybody know the real answer? Sorry. Those State Bowls just don’t do it for me.

I guess it could be worse. After all, it is football.

**

We know San Dimas will run for over 4000 yards. They always do. So instead of waiting until October to get the hogs up front some love, let’s get it out of the way now. Here’s the Saints offensive line. TE- Nick Sloan, Tackles- John Egan and Fadi Zaki, Guards- Chris Diaz and Fred Salazar, C- Nico Guerra.

The Saints are off Zero Week and will travel to Long Beach to face Wilson on August 24. They open Valle Vista League September 28th at Baldwin Park.

Speaking of Baldwin Park, they have another new coach. No Josh Knight did not get dismissed during passing leagues, but he did get promoted to Athletic Director. The new HC will be named this week. Before the BP faithful freak out please know that he’s familiar with the program and has been on staff  all summer. Until he is announced by the board I’m not at liberty to reveal his name but the transition will be a smooth one.

The Braves game against El Monte Friday night might not be so smooth however. The Lions, in Jesse Ceniceros’ double wing offense, have been running wild all summer. Last Friday night they blitzed Ganesha for nine touchdowns in 25 plays. Ben Owsley, a transfer from Paramount, looks like the real deal. After Baldwin Park, the Lions get Rio Hondo League opponents South Pasadena and San Marino at home.

Can they challenge Arroyo? “I told you they were going to be good,” said a local coach.

**

South Pasadena and San Marino will contend in the Rio Hondo but the big fish is still Monrovia. The Wildcats have not only brought in new head coach Chris Williams but they got the band back together as well for the rest of the staff. Former Wildcat stars Mason Bryant, George Frazier, Anthony Craft, Matt Norman and Ellis McCarthy are back in M-Town to coach the players up. Monrovia never fell off the face of the earth. But 4-7 records and first round playoff exits just don’t cut it at Monrovia.

“We need to get it back to where it was,” Craft said referring the CIF championship teams that he and his friends were part of.

Can Monrovia win a title in Williams first year? Time will tell but an offense with Maury Rams IV as the focal point isn’t a bad place to start. A road win over Burbank in Zero Week  on the road would be huge for the Cats.

**

I really like Arcadia in the Pacific. Seeing them win the SGV Shootout at Arroyo was impressive and the Apaches have talent all over the field. But I’m still in a place I have to see it to believe it. Beating Crescenta Valley and Burbank is no easy task no matter how much talent you have. The Apaches opening game at home against La Salle will be a nice measuring stick.

Keep an eye on Burbank tight end Duncan Smith. He caught 11 touchdown passes last year as a junior.

Muir might miss the playoffs again and the Mustangs opener at Charter Oak could get ugly. Muir lost to Arcadia, CV and Burbank last year and those three are just as good, if not better in 2018. Tough sledding for the Stangs.

**

We have two great local matchups Friday night with Bonita at Arroyo and Los Altos at Covina. For the Bearcats it will be the debut of head coach Steve Bogan. J.P. Andrade is back at quarterback and that along with Bogan should put Bonita right back in the hunt. I’m thinking we won’t be seeing a 3-7 season again.

Arroyo still has Ernesto Camacho. Does anybody else forget he was only a sophomore when he led the Knights to the CIF title in 2016?

Los Altos and Travis Brown will be looking to upend the Colts at District Field. A win over Covina in his first game as coach would be big for Brown but another Brown, Joe, and Nin Burns II will be standing in his way. Also the Conquerors need to find a way to stop Erik Cuellar who rushed for 2,302 yards and 20 touchdowns last year.

**

For everybody that keeps demanding the truth on the Schurr transfers, here you go. Of the nine total, six are “under review” and the other three are “pending former school’s response.” How did I dig out this information? How did I unearth this game changing bombshell? By logging on to the CIF website. It’s right there for all the world to see.

Oh and this will really sting. The three water polo guys got approved. And that’s the truth.

That’s my principle.

Wow! I thought I was the only one who saw this! Those two guys are always sticking up for Jude. Jude runs the Air Raid team and he has influenced more then 10 different kids to enroll at Schurr. That is a direct rule breaker in CIF rules. It’s called the 200A rule. He and the rest of the Schurr goon squad will be responsible this week when they start handing down suspensions. If I was a parent of one of those kids I would be furious.
So there you have it! One of the rules they continue to break…

Tired of Timmy and the rest of the mid staff always covering for Oliva. How about the mid and others think about the actual players that become ineligible and lose out on their football season. For some, they lose out on their senior year as a result of people like Jude.

From Duane B.: Just how are we covering for coach Oliva? If you have some specific allegations against him spit it out! You come on here and insinuate that coach Oliva has done something wrong or illegal, enlighten all of us. That way coach Oliva will know what all the fuss is about. If you don’t want to say it here, Tim and my email addresses are below. Let us know the specific things we are covering up and we can ask coach Oliva to respond.
As far as us thinking about the kids, that’s what we always do! That’s why we just don’t care about transfers anymore. As far as we are concerned, if a kid wants to go somewhere else where they and their parents think he or she will have a better opportunity, let them go! Ask yourself this. Are YOU really concerned about the kids well being?

I don’t see Arcadia taking this laying down. Muir has had a habit of recruiting kids from other league rosters. Real word on the street is Arcadia has text messages from Muir staff to kids enrolled in their school and on their team. This could go very poorly for Muir if true.

Then why isn’t he coaching? If you’re trying to say he wasn’t a coach then you don’t know what the rules are either. In order to be on the field with student athletes you must be cleared by the district. No exceptions are made. He was clearly coaching but decided to not go through the process. Like I said earlier, that should fall on the AD or HC. Either way he’s out. He won’t be allowed to even be on the field. That came directly from a District representative. Call and ask if you don’t believe…
From T. Peterson: He may have been helping out but he wasn’t officially on the coaching staff – even last year. A lot of guys help out but aren’t on the staff – common practice. You can call it “coaching” but he was never named to the staff. He’s not there now because he left. He didn’t plan on staying this year. He’s probably at the beach now. Ha ha!

Would you say that if he said something inappropriate to your child ? Or worse, maybe hit him? I don’t think you would be so forgiving. To say he wasn’t coaching is a direct lie. I saw him last year in the box on a few occasions. Don’t sit there and support bad behavior. That’s why the district has rules and that’s why he was shown the door. If you’re from district then you would know this. But obviously your an imposter. Some people don’t know how stupid they sound. Your one of them…
From T. Peterson: He was never officially on staff. The district couldn’t ban him or “show him the door” because he wasn’t on the Schurr staff. They had no say because there was nothing to rule on.

He wasn’t cleared through district office. A big no no ! What if he hit a kid or said something inappropriate? Big lawsuit would follow. You would think he would know the rules since he was a former HC. Some people think they’re bigger then the program. Obviously he was shown the door. But that responsibility shouldve been handled by the AD or HC. He shouldn’t take all the blame for that.

Looking at the big picture, I wonder how many high school head coaches make use of “consultants,” “independent contractors,” etc. in running their programs.
It seems to me that there’s a built-in lack of accountability there. I’m curious as to how prevalent this practice is.
I believe that anyone who coaches or does other work for a high school athletic program should be officially on staff, or they should not be allowed to participate.
I think this is an area that CIF has to address, if it hasn’t done so already. I’m also curious as to what degree school district regulations, or even the State Education Code, might apply.

@Ron Voorman. Thank you for mansplaining to me what Really? meant. My point is that we need to stop thinking that a kid playing football will somehow fix American society and lesson the feminization (to paraphrase Really’s repulsive phrasing) of today’s society. This, to me, sounds like he is bemoaning some some perceived loss of masculine toughness. Football does not have the monopoly on teaching character or toughness or navigating adversity.

Can TP or some Admin just make a post called Schurr/Montebello and let them just post there so the rest of the articles dont have to be sidetracked. And then any post in another article between them can just be deleted since the rest of us are tired of seeing both sides try to outduel each other in looking like teenage girls arguing over a boy.

@ Publius: I believe the comments by “Really?” relate more directly to character flaws such as laziness and entitlement. But, I agree with his point about the need for young men to start behaving like responsible adults.
Yes, our character traits do count; they make an impact on the people around us and on society in general. The main question is whether each of us makes a positive impact or a negative one.

Mr. Olivas was never a coach for the district and has no ties to the school. He seems to have relationships with some of the staff and thats as far as it goes. if he wants to boost up our programs and suggest that kids around the area out of the area come to be positive impacts on the community and school…. THAT IS ALRIGHT by me!
that is what every other parent, friend, and family member does for Bell Gardens, Schurr and Montebello… lets not get into the ethical talks because being part of the district i know first hand that all these men tip toe that line.

    Schurr-

I assure you that I’m not his sister…like I said before, I’ve been coaching in the area for over 20 years. I know the truth and I know some are facts.
You say that the coaches are not as people are describing. So how come Jude Oliva is no longer allowed to coach at Schurr? The school district outed him. Not even his head coach was able to come to his rescue. I called the district and they told me directly. I’ve seen this guy at the park talking with the kids and trying to influence them to Schurr. Is that a crime? I don’t think so. But if you’re legit then you don’t need to do those types of things. Bottom line is that this is the second time he’s broken all the rules to coach. I heard about all the unethical things he did at San Gabriel but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. So to sit here and say “ hes not like that” is an injustice to our community. He also brought over 3 kids from Buena Park where he’s a teacher. Who does that? Hopefully that school gets wind of those things as well. You reap what you sow.
I hope those kids just decide to return to their previous schools and this goes away. The only one really suffering will be them when their eligibility is taken away.
If this was MHS doing these types of things then I would have the same argument. I’m not siding with anyone. I just feel that it’s really important to have rules that everyone should follow and that’s not happening right now. We will see soon enough…

Harassment! What a word to use to describe what a coach is doing wrong. I can’t believe the pussification of our youths. Mommy says, I am giving you an allowance, but to get it you must take out the trash. Now please take out the trash. He huffs and puffs but does it. The trash gets full again, she asks him to do his only job. Hi says in a minuets.Son Forgets and mommy reminds him. He continues to play with his Xbox. Now the trash builds up. Now she is Firm with him . She realized, he left. She waits and now there are 3 bags of trash. A party is going on with adults. He comes home and she says, you didn’t take out the trash! So. Do it now! Ok, and goes to the bathroom . Now she is Pizzed off. 5 bags of trash, damn it where are you Johnny? He is in his room playing Madan Football. She screams at him! Hey, why are you harassing me! I-Got This! Maybe he should tell his teacher at School to call child services for the abuse he is taking. Same Babymamma Pete has to deal will. She never learned. Oh by the way he still got his $20.00 allowance! LMAO!!

@ all-about the schurr situation, I personally hold head coach Ramos responsible for all actions and misdeeds. No other, not staff, not assistants, not anyone else! Head coach Ramos handled everything unprofessional and had knowledge of everything going on. Now he wants to blame his staff, and distance himself from every wrong doing. No that will not suffice. I will seek the resignation of shs head coach ramos. I can also validate these claims. Now this is what “I” said!
