Saturday Night Vikes!

(Covina) – It was all Northview on a Saturday night in Covina. The Vikings jumped out to a 24-7 halftime lead and cruised to a 31-7 win over Los Altos at Covina District Field.

Northview was never threatened in the contest. On a night when Canelo Alvarez won by decision over Gennady Golovkin the Vikings knocked out Los Altos.

On Northview’s first possession James Jimenez connected with Deshon Thompson on a 79-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0.

Los Altos fumbled the ball away in its own territory on its next possessions but Northview could only manage just three points on a 28-yard Brian Calderon field goal.

The Conquerors, feeling somewhat invigorated being only down ten points instead of three touchdowns, came up with a big strike. Rene Zaldivar broke through the Northview line and rumbled 77 yards for the touchdown and suddenly, in a quarter in which Northview had completely dominated, Los Altos was only down 10-7. The Conquerors never scored again.

On the next possession Jimenez hit Deshon Thompson on a screen pass and he did the rest zig zagging his way 55 yards for six late in the first quarter to make it 17-7.

Early in the second it was Deshon’s brother Damion Thompson getting into the act by hauling in a 70-yard pitch from Jimenez for the score. The Vikings defense was stout holding Los Altos and it was 24-7 at the break.

Northview only scored one more time but that’s all that was necessary. Jimenez capped a 14-play, 60 yard drive with a three-yard run with 3:17 left in the third quarter for the 31-7 advantage.

The Vikings spent the rest of the evening putting the clamps on Los Altos. Northview held the Conqs to just 82 yards passing. David Hacegaba was just 3 for 14 for 82 yards and an interception. They did manage 167 yards on the ground with Zaldivar accounting for 97 of those. Northview forced three Los Altos turnovers including an interception by Damion Thompson in the second half.

For Northview Jimenez completed 15-24 for 282 yards and 3 scores and also ran for a touchdown. The Thompson brothers combined for 238 yards receiving and 3 TDs. Jamier Johnson had 7 receptions for 44 yards.

Northview remained unbeaten improving to 5-0 with the victory while Los Altos fell to 2-3. Both teams are on bye next week before starting league play in two weeks.

LA fans are still quiet??? I’m shocked, maybe they’re grown or maybe they’re too busy eating crow. Either way it’s a good thing….

Anonymous has a point!!!! In preseason you try to build depth throughout your team!!! To build depth you have to play, and why not give your second team a chance!!!

LA problem is they have a coach that has no winning season under his belt and a AD and Principle thats thinks bringing back the past will be a better fit.

No one will be regretting talking about the LA coaches and their dream team of transfers. Summer LA parents said YES we are dominating this year we have transfers and a new coach that is the best. Start of season LA parents well the problem is we’re a young team and we’re working through growing pains. In reality LA will beat WC and Walnut and thats it.

Maybe no one is talking about Charter Oak because their parents don’t live on the message board, and not as delusional.

Dude these where non league game, LA knows they dont have a huge line or a above average QB. Now they need to make adjustments for the start of league. But people right away start talking snack. How come nobody is talking about how bad Charter Oak is doing. But if LA ends up doing good in league play these same parents talking smack will be praising Coach Brown

Hard to reckon just what “happened” to Los Altos. Might have something to do with the meddling parents and fans who ran Ziola and Spathias out of town. That’s my wild guess.

I saw the twitter feed of the Northview field goal. The Los Altos defense #88 and #24 are just standing there with their hands on their hips. Did this team give up?
I think Northview is younger than Los Altos. I remember when Los Altos use to be a proud high school football program. What happen?

Those LA parents that were up in arms all last year are very quiet this year and at this point last year they only had 1 loss with only 3 returning starters. LOL

Northview looks really good that being said, I seen a lot of Northview teams underachieve in the playoffs. Playoffs, Playoffs!!! Finals? C’mon man we still have the whole league to get a better understanding of teams.

Commenter ‘Coach Thompson’ makes a tremendous point about the importance of coaching at the high school level. We all know that most high school athletes will never play at the next level, but it’s also true that most high school coaches aren’t qualified to direct a team at the next level either. Fact is, a large percentage of them aren’t qualified for the job they have now. THAT’S why a decent-to-great high school coach can really shine: they have their act together, are keen observers of the details, and they’re playing against a lot of guys who don’t have those qualities.
The above explanation sheds light on why Brown got beaten so badly by Perez.

Looking at Northview’s schedule I think the only team that has a chance at beating them is San Dimas. NV is poised to go undefeated. San Marino was the best team to beat them but no dice. Coach Perez has a great coaching job after losing Comstock. I look forward to the final game of the season. And yes I know they still have to lay Covina…. but NV just manhandled Los Altos who beat Covina.

Wasn’t the Los Altos parents groupies and alumni happy with the hiring of new coach. Supposedly brought in transfers. They were going to be better then last year?

Gotta be impressed with Northview and its staff. They just lost perhaps the best player ever to attend Northview yet they got better. The jimmys and the joeys are very important but this proves coaches still matter. I could be wrong but Los Altos isn’t supposed to lose to a team like Northview let alone get manhandled like they did. especially after Northview seemingly would have to replace a great class. Much respect to the Vikings and especially that coaching staff.

Sure, Northview is being spoken of in hushed tones this season, but I’m supposing Los Altos shouldn’t be so bad as to receive a thrashing like this. Right about now, all those instigators and agitators who ran Spathias out of town must be feeling a bit small.
