Game Night: Week 7

Big game for Fred Salazar and the Saints Thursday night against Covina.

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.

Thursday October 4

Valle Vista

Covina (4-2) at San Dimas (5-1)

Expect a high scoring affair. Remember Covina-Monrovia a few weeks ago? Both teams can score, that’s a given. The question is who will make the most stops? Covina on occasion has shown signs of solid defense. The Colts did hold South El Monte to 9 points and West Covina to 16. They have also been torched a couple of times. Monrovia racked up 50 in a loss. Interesting fact about San Dimas – in four of its five wins the Saints have allowed 14 points. They’ll allow more than 14 in this one but they will get the win. The Saints defense comes up big in the fourth quarter.

San Dimas 35 Covina 28

Del Rio

Santa Fe (1-5) at La Serna (6-1) at California

Santa Fe needs a win to kick off league play. La Serna needs the victory to continue its quest to run through the Del Rio. The loss to Warren two weeks ago just made the Lancers mad. They dropped 49 on Cal a week ago and it may be more here. La Serna gets out of the gate quickly and never lets off the gas. It might be over by halftime.

La Serna 52 Santa Fe 13

Friday October 5

Almont

Montebello (2-4) at Alhambra (5-1) at Moor Field

Alhambra felt what it was like in the Almont with last week’s loss to Schurr. The Moors will get another taste of that medicine against Montebello. The Oilers had to rally last week to beat Bell Gardens for a huge win. Another Oiler win here will set up a showdown with Schurr on October 12 for the league title. Alhambra will hang around. The Moors gave Schurr fits last week before succumbing. But in the end Montebello will prevail. The Oilers are still one of the big boys in the Almont.

Montebello 31 Alhambra 17

Hacienda

Charter Oak (1-5) at Diamond Ranch (4-2)

Charter Oak got off the mat last week with a big win over West Covina. The Chargers started off slow with five straight losses but are now trying to do some damage in the Hacienda and get in the playoffs. Diamond Ranch is coming off a win over Los Altos. Although the win was uglier than the Brett Kavanaugh hearing, it was a victory for the Panthers. Los Altos committed some crucial turnovers in the loss. Charter Oak probably won’t. The Chargers aren’t your typical 1-5 team. They know a win here and they’re suddenly right back in the driver’s seat. Diamond Ranch may hold the lead for awhile but the Chargers pull it out late. After all, it’s Charter Oak.

Charter Oak 27 Diamond Ranch 24

Mission Valley

Arroyo (5-1) at South El Monte (3-3)

There’s been lot of noise this week about South El Monte upsetting Arroyo. The Eagles are back, they say. The Eagles aren’t the same team that lost to Alhambra they say. Okay, well see. The Knights have steamrolled to five straight victories after a Zero Week loss to Bonita. In case you haven’t noticed Bonita is undefeated on the field. South El Monte blasted Mt. View and Gabrielino but doesn’t everybody? Arroyo and South do share a common non-league opponent in Nogales. Arroyo bombed the Nobles 48-7 while the Eagles struggled to beat them 28-21. If everything goes right for South and everything goes wrong for Arroyo, the Eagles have a chance. I just don’t see it. Arroyo…big.

Arroyo 42 South El Monte 10

Pacific

Crescenta Valley (6-0) at Burbank (3-3) at Burroughs

This would be a huge win for Burbank and put them right back in the thick of the Pacific race. For Crescenta Valley it would be another step on the road to an unbeaten season. The Falcons haven’t been tested yet. Muir was expected to push them and fell 31-7. CV brushed aside Burroughs last week 28-7. Burbank will test them. The Bulldogs don’t roll over for anybody. But they won’t have enough. Falcons go to 7-0.

Crescenta Valley 37 Burbank 30

Palomares

Alta Loma (5-1) at Bonita (6-0, 5-1 Forfeit) at San Dimas

This could be Bonita’s biggest test so far. The Bearcats have had close calls. They beat Covina and Colony by a touchdown in each of the last two weeks. Alta Loma has only fallen to Damien. The Braves had big wins over Los Osos and Don Lugo earlier in the year. The winner moves to the top of the Palomares, which may be the toughest league in the area. Bonita and Steve Bogan just keep finding a way to win. It won’t be easy, it never is. But the Bearcats get it done again.

Non-League

Paraclete (2-5) at St. Francis (4-2)

Two powerhouse programs will be banging heads in La Canada. St. Francis, which doesn’t open up Angelus League play until next week, is riding a three game winning streak against some pretty stiff competition. The Golden Knights knocked off Saugus and Harvard-Westlake and last week dropped 51 on Mayfair. Don’t let Paraclete’s record fool you. The Spirits play a schedule that includes everybody except the Georgia Bulldogs. If you’re looking for something to do and want to see some good high school football head over to Friedman Field Friday night. St. Francis wins at home.

Regarding the Del Rio League: it’s not like any of these teams historically have been powerhouses in the CIF southern section. They have been solid, public school programs in the Greater Whittier Area (including Santa Fe Springs, La Mirada, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, etc). The coaches and programs you guys refer to should be commended for getting their players to come out and line up every Friday and compete to the best of their ability. Our current football society has become plagued with the greed and the need for instant gratification. This isn’t a video game that they get to push the reset button the minute they are getting beat. Gone are the days of everyone getting a participation trophy. You parents and coaches who want immediate success are doing nothing for your kids in preparation for the real adult world.

Eg. “Not happy with the school you chose your freshman year? Lets transfer!”
“Oh, that school you just moved to brought in another player at your position and you aren’t willing to compete and earn the starting spot, Let’s transfer again!” (and so on and so on). Sad state of affairs. Not many of these kids will know what it’s like to fight and claw their way out of a hole. Earn what’s rightfully theirs. Feel good about an honest 40 hour work week and cash that check and go home to their family and be grateful for what they have.

We all have to take a step back and recognize that this is high school football. Not all of your “Johnnies & Joeys” are as good as you think. You spend all that money on a personal trainer that gives you a line about “how good your kid is gonna be”. How about holding your kids accountable for doing their school work, for doing their chores when they get home, for treating and respecting their authorities (teachers, police, etc) with respect. Nope….you’re the parent that blames these people for your kids’ flaws and deficiencies when all along it starts at home. It starts with you!
    What a shame.!!!

To all you coaches who put in the long hours you do, I and many others applaud you. You are not always blessed with the pool of athletes like some other schools. You are not always fortunate enough to have that crystal ball and be prepared for an injury that may have a huge impact on our team, or the kid(s) that becomes academically ineligible because they did’t do their school work. But at the end of the day, those young men who look you in the eyes and say, “yes sir” with complete respect, those kids will look back and appreciate the work you put in despite the wins and losses.

I get the game is emotional and everyone wants to win. So did I…….but this game has taught us life lessons. It teaches us to deal with adversity. These kids will never learn those life lesson if mommy and daddy hold their hands forever.

Is it because nobody better is available, or is it because the district likes these guys and doesn’t care how losing affects the kids?

Time for a change at Santa Fe, Coach Pierson has run the program into the ground! 1 win is unacceptable. If Cal loses tonight it will time for change there as well, Coach Trudell has been at Cal for 5 years and has not made the playoffs since his first year. There should be some turnover in head coaches this off season.

@ Football Outsider: Thanks, man. I plan to do stats at Alhambra and provide journalistic coverage of the games for as long as the people in charge want to keep me around.
My goal has been to increase public interest in the AHS program, and in high school sports generally. I believe the best way to do that is by being as informative, factual, and constructive as possible.
I have fun with it, too. I sometimes enjoy a little banter, but let’s be reasonable about it. We can all support our favorite teams without demeaning those who disagree with us.

@ AHS: Be bold on Friday night, and let your play do the talking.

@ Amazon: It looks like you’re putting that MBA or bachelor’s degree in marketing to good use. You’re a creative guy; I hope you have a lucrative career ahead of you. Just make sure that you always tout reliable products…

Oiler Nation II: 52 pints? That would be a large-scale beer run!

@ Alhambra Alum: Such incredibly ignorant comments from someone who most likely received a good education at AHS.
I’ve supported our players and coaches for the last 15 years. I have a passion for our program and the school, and I’ve always wanted our guys to succeed.
You must be relatively new here; otherwise, you would’ve lost track of the number of times that I’ve stood up for Alhambra. I just don’t think that doing so requires me to behave in a boorish or disrespectful manner.
The fact that I use some restraint in what I write doesn’t mean that I’m worried about anyone else on this blog. I believe in being fair and responsible.
As for the personal stuff, I’ve owned my own house for over 32 years, so you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about, unless you’re speaking metaphorically.
I have also been in public education for nearly 40 years, and, for the most part, I’ve taught successfully in settings that many would be hesitant to walk into.
I don’t believe you’re qualified to pass judgment on my toughness, or alleged lack thereof. You could try to enhance your credibility a little by attaching your real name to those bizarre statements of yours.
