Congratulations to the Arcadia football coaches and ballplayers. So far they are 7-2 overall and 6-0 in league. The former OC from South El Monte Mike Mooney is now on this staff. What a great decision for Arcadia to bring him on board. For some reason victory’s follow Mike wherever he goes. Great job Arcadia

I’m stepping away from that pot I’ve been stirring to say that Americans value winning, not coming close. Close only counts in horseshoes and grenades.

ER is small but not that small. On Santa Fe’s homecoming game when the home team is keyed up, ER shoved the bigger lineman off the field. No trickery just straight zone blocking here we come stop us football. The line is extremely fit, they have to be to play the fast paced offense they use. No huddle snap the ball and we are in your face football. The defense is also quick, they wrap and hang on and the backers are strong, rarely out of position. The DB’s are good tacklers and improving fast. Our QB’s, we use 3 or more I think, are tiny but you can’t have everything. They are good ball handlers and when they get outside can chew up yards. We play with what we have and that’s fine for ER fans.

What an outstanding performance by Bell Gardens quarterback Agustin Velasquez on Friday night:
Velasquez completed 17 of 31 passes for 247 yards and a TD (with 1 interception), and he also carried the ball 27 times for 141 yards and 2 scores. He could end up being the Almont League’s offensive MVP.

Other noteworthy performances from the Alhambra-Bell Gardens game:

BG running back Jesus Sandoval: 14 carries for 135 yards and a TD; he also caught 3 passes for 62 yards and a TD. Sandoval scored on an 80-yard run in the first quarter.
BG wide receiver Jeremy Loaiza: 11 catches for 119 yards.
Alhambra QB Noah Rodriguez: 10 of 25 for 372 yards and 4 TD’s, with 3 interceptions.
AHS WR Raul Cortez: 5 receptions for 230 yards and 3 TD’s; his scores came on plays of 69, 50, and 85 yards.
AHS WR Vito Russell: 2 receptions for 82 yards and a TD; he caught a 74-yard “bomb” from Rodriguez.

Bell Gardens improved its record to 3-1 in the Almont League and 5-4 overall; the Lancers now have a chance to finish in at least a tie for first place.
Alhambra dropped to 2-2 in league and 7-2 overall; the Moors are “on the bubble” for a Division 13 playoff spot.

@Almont Fan: Yeah, you’re right about no one getting the “nod” as an Almont League co-champion. I’m well aware of the current divisional playoff setup, which we’ve had since 2013.
I was just trying to emphasize the fact that Montebello has beaten both Bell Gardens and Schurr; the Oilers might get a slight nod when it comes to bragging rights.
I saw first-hand what a tremendous athlete Agustin Velasquez is. I’ll be back with his stats in a while.

Montebello beat both BG and Schurr so they would be #1 (even if no head to head match up is needed) even though they’re co champs. They lost to Alhambra okay at the end they got the Almont title.

When Montebello defeats San Gabriel on Friday, they will be officially be Co-Champs with the winner of Schurr and Bell Gardens.

There is no such thing as getting the “nod”. That was only relevant in the old days when all the Almont teams were in the same division and the “head to head” win would determine who went in as the 1st seed for the Almont.

Yes, Montebello beat both SHS and BGHS, but MHS also lost to a more inferior team in Alhambra.
MHS will be co-champs with either SHS or BGHS.

My guess best guess? I will take an amazing quarterback in Velasquez (BGHS) over an amazing receiver in Hartfield (SHS).

Lets see what cultivates in The Gardens. A long time farmer Ramos who knows the soil well in BG, or a newer farmer Beltran still trying to figure out the soils particle structure.

The players are still small and not the greatest athletes in the world however Medrano and his staff have done a tremendous job getting this team to the position it’s in now. It’s no fluke, this group was always destined to be special, when they arrived in 2015 Roddy Hiatt had just taken over, Rich Melendez was supposed to be the Frosh head coach and he screwed that whole thing up, these kids ended up going 4-6 which never should have happened. In comes Adrian Medrano who not only added stability but made the ranch an attractive place for a few of those TC wolverines who were spread out as far as Redlands. Here we are in week 10 of their senior year with a shot at a league title, regardless of the outcome The Ranch is doing it with all homegrown kids, no one went out and recruited, no one made false promises, nothing but hard work. Should be a good one on Friday.

    Proud to say
“You haven’t been hit till you’ve been hit by the ranch”

@ MHS parent: You misunderstood my comment. I said Montebello will most likely end up as the league co-champion with either Bell Gardens or Schurr.
Whichever team wins the BG-Schurr game will end up 4-1 in league, like Montebello should. And, yes, Montebello has beaten both of those teams.
The best Alhambra can do now is a tie for third place. Good luck to Montebello in the playoffs.

@ BG: Yeah, I have to agree with you about that.
The BG-AHS score went from 28-27 to 44-27 in a span of only 1:17 late in the fourth quarter. It was still an eight-point game (at 35-27) with four minutes left, but the Lancers then killed us with a pick-six.

@ Almont Excitement: I share your excitement; I hope you never lose it.
However, you should check Friday night’s timeline more closely.
The score was 7-6 until over halfway through the second quarter; the Lancers then scored two TD’s to take a 21-6 halftime lead.
But, Alhambra closed the gap to 28-27 late in the third quarter, and the score remained there until BG got another touchdown with 4:23 left in the game.
Bell Gardens dominated the game in several statistical areas, but the score is always the most important stat. Alhambra’s kids should get some credit for fighting back and coming close to pulling off an improbable win.
Congrats to everyone at Bell Gardens; you have a good team now with that explosive offense.

@ No Moor: The only response I’m going to make to your mostly senseless rant is that you’re putting words into my mouth which I never said, or you’re twisting them to the point that they’re unrecognizable.
I’ve never “tried to have it both ways” on anything. It’s obvious that you just like to stir the pot. If you’re not an Alhambra fan, that’s fine.
I’ll still be happy with our 8-2 season. The real trick for us will be to repeat that sort of record and do better in league next year.

And, to that person who was talking “@” me: I try to avoid excesses, but perhaps you were actually suggesting that I was making excuses.
I have no excuses to offer. Alhambra has lost two games, fair and square, this season.
The only suggestion I’d make here is to curb the name-calling. I believe it’s possible to disagree about something and be civil about it. I hope you enjoy the rest of the football season.

Monrovia beat a really scrappy Monte Vista Christian (Northern California) today 55-27 Mtown had too many weapons for Monte Vista. Remember the name Nick Hernandez and Devon Mayes. Outstanding Athletes! Can’t wait to see who wins next week. I’ve seen SM and I am very glad Monrovia played today or else I wouldn’t have seen them play prior to playoffs. And my honest opinion Monrovia is better (athlete wise) than San Marino. Again, can’t wait to see who wins!

I also have to point out that San Gabriel gave Schurr a hard time on Friday night. Packing two games into one week almost worked out for the Matadors.

No matter what happens next week, I have to say that this has been Medrano’s best coaching job yet. I saw ER in the summer and they looked absolutely abysmal. Didn’t look like there were many playmakers plus players were very small. I also saw their linemen and they didn’t look that much better. Credit to those kids for playing tough and finding a way to win.

I am not going to resurrect the issue of Montebello area transfers here, but will just say that Vrooman was agitated over the new players on Schurr’s roster when they beat the Moors, but now says the Oilers’ lineup was largely unaffected when that team lost many key stars. Nice to have it both ways.
My main reason for writing, however, is to thank the man for explaining to one and all how a game that’s very competitive through 90% of its duration can often be lost in the last couple minutes, and that what has happened to Alhambra over the years in those closing moments somehow denies the team its due. I’m left to wonder just how long this fellow has been watching sports, where he can fail to see that the last minutes of a contest (commonly called CRUNCH TIME) are when we separate the men from the boys, the time when MOST games are decided. Thus, you don’t get credit for ‘hanging in there’ through three and a half quarters, only for what the scoreboard says after ALL the time has run off.

Ron you are wrong, it was 21 to 6 BG for the majority of the 1st half. with one minute left in the 3rd it was 28 to 27 BG and then the flood gates opened! Alhambra scored on three long pass plays. This was not a game, Alhambra kids were dropping like flies from cramps! The BG Quarterback ran and passed all over the place! BG also thru an interception near the goal line, this score could have been worse. I usually agree with a lot of what you post on here but the comment about the game being close is wrong.

At this point even though the season has not fully played out 3 coaches need to be mentioned. All 3 moved at the same time from solid winning programs. All 3 received harsh critiques on these boards going so far as being personal in nature. All 3 have gone quietly about their jobs taking care of business and reviving dormant programs to once again compete for league titles. Coaches Beltran, Ciniceros and Medrano. Just a quick shout out for doing a thankless job so well.

@ No Moor: Only a few people like yourself would talk about what will most likely be an 8-2 season as if it were a total failure. It should be considered a success at some level, whether or not Alhambra gets into the playoffs, considering the struggles we’ve endured over the last several years.
We were just a few plays away from having an undefeated regular season; our losses against Schurr and Bell Gardens were both in the final minutes.
Schurr’s winning touchdown came with 46 seconds remaining in the game, and, last night, we were down by one point (at 28-27) until Bell Gardens scored again with 4:23 left.
The “down” Montebello team you talk about will likely be a league co-champion with either Bell Gardens or Schurr. These are not bad teams. The Almont League has been stronger this year, with four competitive teams, instead of the usual three (or, occasionally, even two).
By the way, we don’t do stunts; we just try to win each game as it comes up. I’ll take an 8-2 season any time.

DEMOGRAPHICS! Only an idiot would refuse to accept the facts. On my great schools website the demographics for TC are listed as follows:
    White 10%
    Hispanic 18%
    Asian 69%
    other 3%
They have the coach many said they had to have in order to be successful in Saxon. If you look at the other story about the game a commenter named Old Has Been also states that classes and grades are what Temple City is all about, not Football. You also make my point with reference to the baseball team and demographics. The fact is a baseball team roster can survive with 12-15, a football team cannot.
