Where did your QB come from? Exactly. If he didn’t transfer in to fill a much needed role on your team you guys wouldn’t have your title. Rowland has an extremely large student body that is made up mostly of Asian kids who would rather score extremely high in the classroom and can careless about football or baseball. RHS excels in sports like tennis, golf, swimming , and water polo. Unless RHS starts to recruit like NHS they will always struggle on the football field.

To bad we beat you by 20 points. You guys lost to Gladstone.lol… your really bumping your chest right now? I don’t get it. Well you would maybe come in fifth in the Valle Vista, so theres that. Nogales stinks, just lucky you guys are in a sorry league. You’ll be out of the playoffs after Friday, your going to get smashed.

What is Rowland complaining about? You guys have great facilities, a big student body and you can’t come in third place. You don’t deserve to go to the playoffs. Maybe you guys need to look into the mirror and understand why Rowland never makes the playoffs. We are league champs for the second year in a row, that’s why we are in the playoffs. Like the principal said the best high school in the country.

Pacific league is harder to win just by the fact that of the amount of tough teams. 3rd place doesn’t guarantee entry into any division. The divisions are redone every 2 years. With the turmoil in Glendale not sure if they will stay in the league. Hoover has a lot to do to keep their program

No excuses for our Cardinals. This staff and Junior class is very hungry and ready to work. They didnt get it done on the field but they got a taste of success and realize they are no longer the laughing stock of the league. I am excited for my sons senior year and the excellent staff these coaches have done. Go Cardinals!

It is true that Whittier had a good season. There, you’ve been validated. No need for postseason exercises. By the way, in answer to commenter Football Fan, it’s not just Pioneer’s fault for Whittier being kept out, it’s Pioneer’s fault for everything.

Here are the Calpreps projections for a few local teams: Eisenhower 56-7 over Schurr, Highland 48-0 over SEM, El Monte 56-6 over St. Pius X, St. Paul 44-6 over Corona. These are just for teams we follow; there are many, many more such lopsided games on tap this week.
In the endless debate over making leagues more equal, I suggest discounting the value of league performance altogether. Let the kids have their thrills over besting their neighborhood buddies, but when it comes time to decide who gets in the playoffs–and who they will play—let the ranking numbers of Maxpreps and Calpreps do the talking. It’s time for this new experiment.

Div 3 I’m suggesting you tweak the old way by releaguing football only! For instance you might have a league with Hoover Glendale Temple City South Pas
La Canada and Marshall and they would be in Div 13. All the D13 Leagues would be with schools with little success and give them a true shot playing in Leagues and a divisions against schools of similar ability. Every 4 years you would look at it and keep it equitable as possible move some schools up or down to different leagues and divisions.

Also, saw somebody brought this up on Robledos Twitter. Rowland plays in a WAY tougher Valle Vista league, they finished 4th. Nogales won there league, that league is terrible compared to the Valle Vista league. Both teams were 5-5, Rowland beat Nogales by 20 points this year when they played. 20!!!!!!!!!! How is that fair? Come on, the way CIF does this is broken. If the leagues are not changed, head to head, common opponents, and strength of schedule should be above winning league, second place, and third place. Id be really frustrated if I was one of those coaches, and kids that put in all those hard working hours just be told your out, but you knowing your more deserved than some of the teams that got picked ahead of you.

Ok, so let me try to figure this out. Arcadia pretty well dominated the Pacific League this year. We can talk about transfers or whatever, but the fact is, they were a lot more talented and better coached than anyone else. And yet how did Pacific League teams get into the playoffs?
    1 – Arcadia – Division 8
    2 – Burbank – Division 5
    3 – Crescenta Valley – Division 7
    4 – John Muir – No Playoffs (Division 9)
    5 – Pasadena – Division 11
    6 – Burroughs – No Playoffs (Division 10)
    7 – Glendale – No Playoffs (Division 13)
    8 – Hoover – No Playoffs (Division 12)

So basically Burbank and CV, clearly inferior to Arcadia, get put in a higher division because…they used to be better than Arcadia? Arcadia is really damn good (they were respectable against a good D2 team and competitive with a good D3 team) – they should be competing with teams on their level, not getting an easy path to a championship because kids who graduated a few years ago had a few lousy years. Let’s say Cary Harris gets a bunch of transfers, puts things together at Glendale, and somehow wins league. Then we’d have the Pacific League champion gifted a slot in the D13 playoffs because of a history of bad football.

If we’re going to have a system where multiple divisions (eight teams, eight divisions for this league) will be represented in the same league, wouldn’t it make more sense to tie it to league placing instead of to specific teams? The Pacific League champ, WHOEVER it is, should be Division 5, simply because whoever is good enough to win that league is probably appropriate for the Division 5 playoffs, regardless of what their history happens to be.

@Sportsdad The old way had Monrovia open up with Bassett and countless other non-competitive opening games and often quarterfinal games that really were a disservice to both teams. The way it is done now is really for the elite teams in D1 and the teams in D11-13 who could never win a title in the old system. Any way you do it, you will end up with some teams with losing records getting in. For the record, if we stayed with the old system or the system you suggested, Charter Oak still gets in since they won the coin toss and ended up third and Damian would be out.

They’re not many monrovia lovers on this site. There’s only 2 of us left. You said “We” have played them and walked away with two easy wins” Who is we??? Burbank??? Yeah Dena Shocked me too. But what’s monrovia got to do with you and your team I have no clue. And to Say dena would beat monrovia…. now that’s hysterical! Monrovia is climbing back up slowly to be relevant again outside the weak rio hondo league but to say PHS would beat monrovia is BLASPHEMOUS AND SO DISRESPECTFUL!!! PHS can’t even be competitive for four quarters before getting blown out the water. They got the coaching but are not disciplined enough to beat monrovia. Was I surprised monrovia got in… yeah I was after losing to SM however the playoffs seem to be based on league record not overall like the NFL. Years back the saints got in with a first round bye with a 6-10 record but owned the head to head. With the divisions splitting up the league’s. For certain divisions there’s only so many spots based on league I guess…. at least for the lower tier divisions 7 and lower? As far as the Div 9 and 10… you’re guess is as good as mine. But from what I can see. League finishes matter… Muir finished 4th in league and monrovia finished 2nd in league….nuff said

I don’t mind have geographically scattered divisions, if it means having well balanced divisions (not sure if the current system achieves that), but CIF should have a rule requiring games to be played on Saturday if the teams are more than some distance apart. A long drive in Friday traffic is bad for working parents and for kids who will have to miss a bit of class.

It’s more of a NFL system then anything. Not saying it works but, I was told weeks before you gotta win league to get in and if you don’t it’s based on overall record but after seeing who got in and who didn’t it’s clearly based on league record. Like the year the saints were 6-10 but had a first round bye and the 49ers didn’t get in with an 11-5 record.

So I had a chance to finally go catch a game and opted for the LS-Colony game since they are both ranked in the division. I was not disappointed (luckily, I work in that area and didn’t have to fight the 60 frwy traffic). What an exciting game to watch. Neither team seemed to be out of this game. While there were times you thought the momentum would change and one team might runaway with it…..the other would come right back.
My personal thoughts: the composure maintained by the LS team was impressive. They seem to be outsized and out-powered by Colony but they never conceded. They seemed to make big plays when needed. The LS qb is pretty impressive. The RBs are nothing special but they are scrappy and get the job done. Defensively, the LBs made some big hits when needed….42, 43 & 44 are nasty!!! This LS team reminded me of something our old coach used to tell us, “these guys carry a hardhat and steel lunch pail to work”.
As a local guy from the area, it’ll be interesting to see how things play out in post season play. If both teams get into the playoffs, I hope CIF places St. Paul & LS on opposite ends of the Div 5 bracket. It’ll make for a nice backyard brawl.

    *********

Well, CIF placed these two to meet up in the second round. SPHS should get there easily. LS will have their work cut out for them. Hope the boys on the hill are putting in the work because Colony was no walk in the park the first time around.

Div 3 guy. I’m not stupid I know how the system is setup. It’s the whole system is the doing 1 man who obviously didn’t think it through. Every year you have 1-9 and 2-8 teams making the playoffs because they group these schools by division instead of the old system which was simple top 3 teams in the League made the playoffs. If you truly want competitive equity as the brainchild of this system calls it being Rob Wigood use the releaguing process every 4 years and put teams in leagues with schools on equal footing trying to stay as close geographically as they can and use the old way placing each league in the division they deem appropriate. Plus you make the League season much more competitive as well.

This is what I do know/believe
Divisions should have a nearly equitable number of teams. Top divisions should not have 20 to 50 less teams the other divisions.
Parochial schools should have their own division(s).

    On another note….

“Smooth Sailing?” Is everybody blind? Am I the only one who clearly views Orange Vista as a major threat? Come on people, why has Orange Vista been dismissed as a legit title contender? It appears to me that EM hung on for dear life when it faced the Coyotes, and there will definitely be a round 2.

And, for the record, if El Monte wants to go “adelante,” they will have to go passed Adelanto. You people think it’s a foregone conclusion?

What CIF needs to do is
Take top 3 teams from every league

Top 16 qualifying CIF teams make D1
    Playoffs
Next 16 qualifying teams make D2 playoffs
And so on all the way down to D 13.

Make league mean something. And spread the teams throughout.

Yes, I understand by default some teams with losing records are gonna get in because there are not enough teams in the division. Can you answer this please? How does Charter Oak go ahead of Damien in that division? Damien better record. Damien tougher league. Damien BEAT Charter Oak. Damien should be playing a 4-6 Paraclete, not Charter Oak. Instead Damien gets hosed and has to take on the #2 ranked team in division 3. So what gives? The playoff system, or the way they pick the teams, and seadings is flawed. Needs to be fixed.

South Hills, El Monte, Northview, Arcadia win easily in their openers. Arroyo will struggle with Temescal Canyon. San Dimas and San Marino win but will have tough games. Northview v. Warren in the 2nd round is interesting. Not only can Warren match NV speed for speed but come from a league that is physically tougher week in and week out. Then there’s the coaching match up. As good as Perez is his staff struggles in big games. Lara and his key assistants have been there before. San Dimas wins that Division.

As for the system being broken, as long as you are going to have so many divisions you will always have certain Divisions that end up like D3 this year. The teams in D3 have been successful for several years in a row. It just happens that some of those teams had down years, whether it was graduation, injuries, coaching changes…It will be interesting as some of these D3 teams will drop down to a D5 or D6 and probably win CIF

    RE Div 9
Monrovia got the collar drawing the unanimous #1 Seed Palm Desert the good news is if they survive the first game with 3 suspended players and at least one player with a concussion that will not return that quickly with new protocols, Monrovia will have a easy route for a couple of rounds. CIF says Monrovia is the 16 seed.

I dont think we will see lightening in a bottle on this one. Monrovia loses by at least 2 touchdowns, and depending who got suspended maybe more.

SM got a tough draw as based on the brackets in Segerstrom that is supposed to be the 14 seed but Cal Preps and Max preps say Segerstrom is a 5 seed at Cal preps rating of 18.2. How that works in CIF land is more than confusing.
They do have one common opponent in Bell Gardens. Segerstrom beat BG 35-14 and San Marino beat Bell Gardens 41-29 (but lost their QB Middle linebacker Wentz during that game. So based on that there is not much difference in the two teams.
How SM that is in the #2 or #3 seed spot ends up with Seagerstrom rather than Big Bear for Foothill is a mystery based on Max Preps and Cal Preps

How Montebello sits in the 7 seed vs 10 seed bracket position is crazy. Montebello should be the clear 16 seed .. The Alhambra loss 35-22 and a Cal Prep rating of -4.6 and only beating Keppel -45 cal preps 34-7 without a running clock says they are the 16 seed not even close to the middle standings in the bracket. This is not a mystery, but an obvious error.

Clearly with the new format there will be a lot more driving as the bracket stretches from Palm Desert up the Big Bear and down to Orange county. ON a Friday night at 7 or 8PM that will be a lot of 2 hr plus drives. So the gas stations will be the big winners.
