Lions Return to Semis

By MVS Staff

[El Monte] Davon Booth had all four of his touchdown in the first half but it was more than enough as the Lions rolled to 60-12 victory over Nordhoff Friday night at El Monte High School.

The Rangers got possession first and fumbled on the second play but got the ball right back when Booth fumbled on El Monte’s first play. The Lions defense held Nordhoff to a turnover on downs.

El Monte drove the ball 60-plus yards on six plays with Booth taking it in on a 22-yard reverse.

On the first play of the second quarter the Lions got in the end zone again from when quarterback Joseph Herrera hit Booth from 31-yards out.

Midway through the second Booth got in the end zone for the third time when he broke right through the middle of the Rangers defense on a 13-yard pitch.

Lions got the ball with just a few second left in the half and inside their own ten yard line, after their defense had a goal line stand. Booth broke a 91-yard run to paydirt making it 32-0 at the half.

El Monte had possession of the ball first in the second half as Herrera scored on a one yard dive to make it 40-0.

Nordhoff got on the board late in the third quarter when Korey Stevens broke off a 13-yard run for a score but the two point conversion was missed putting it at 40-6.

Abel Cueva got in on the scoring for the Lions when he hurdled a Rangers defender, broke a tackle and took it 45-yards for the touchdown.

Nathan Velasquez and Marco Montoya also scored for El Monte on runs of two yards and 51-yards respectively.

Stevens found the end zone a second time for the Rangers on a two yard run.

Nordhoff quarterback Leeram Stoneman three two interceptions while Stevens carried most of the load on the ground.

The Lions defense was led by senior linebacker Sergio Gonzalez who had multiple tackles and a interception. Freshmen linebacker Johnny Lopez also had a interception.

Booth finished with 17-carries for 238-yards and four total touchdowns. Cueva had 89-yards on eight carries and a score.

El Monte (12-0) stays home for the semi finals and will host Jurupa Hills next Friday night.

Goldy, I have respect for you. I did not call you a hater. It was the other bozo. As far as padding stats, I don’t see it. If anyone padded stats it was Arroyo. If you have any old game film check it out and see what was inputed on maxpreps. Let me know if the numbers add up. I would love to hear your findings.

Hater? Why am I hater because I disagree with you? Come on man we can have back and fourth no need to get nasty. Yes Roy definitely ran all over us at Mt View. But everyone does that lol. I said Roy is definitely on that second tier list he just wasn’t a dominant back IMO. The other thing you have to take into account is we don’t really know what Roy Barajas or any other lions players actual stats are because Sanchez was notorious for massively inflating numbers.

He ran all over you when he played and you know this. Don’t be a hater. Tovar played in a run heavy offense. Roy didn’t.

  4. November 20, 2019 - 10:01 pm | Permalink

Ooofff I don’t know bro. Respectfully 100 percent disagree. Roy was pretty good and played on some good teams But I think Tovar was just bigger and faster. Plus, those 4 extra games were earned games not gifts. Also, the stats weren’t even kind of close even though Roy played on Varsity as a freshman. You gotta be Lion Homer to say that. I hate to admit it but I gotta agree with Knights here the 3 most dominant Runningbacks since 2010 are Fregoso Tovar and now Booth. Barajas would be on a second tier with guys like Mikey Vasquez and Peter Aholoka Matt Eddy.

Roy’s stats were severely padded and everyone knows this, stop it…

I’d take Roy Barajas over Tovar everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. The only thing Tovar has over Barajas is he played his whole Jr year. Barajas got hurt. Tovar had an extra two games both seasons. That’s why he had more rush yards.

Been thinking bout this for a minute
    I’m putting three QBs
    B. Martinez
    S. Rivera
    S. Nava or E.Camacho?

Three RBs three best in the last decade hands down are
    S. Tovar
    D. Booth
    M. Fregoso
If there’s a fourth maybe you could include Josue Martinez from Mt View bad teams but a heck of a back.

    receivers are a little tougher
    D. Cotero
    A. Miller
    J. Parham
    A. Barajas

    Second tier
    Yez Marquez
    Hunter Duran
    R. Cotero
    M. Sahagun

@ Tim Peterson what’s your list look like?

All Decade team for the MVL ok
Starting at Qb for me would Brandon Martinez. Record Holder for most passing yards in the League.
Steve Rivera, Would be my other QB. Great Leader and a two way player.
At Running Back, Sal Tovar Most Rushing yards ever in the MVL
My other Back would be Devon Booth, Elusive and you can use in so many ways.
    Receivers.
Anthony Miller was small but man could he go get it.
David Cotero was also a monster
Micheal Sahagun was beast at TE.
    heres mine show me yours.

    Anonymous,
Lee Aguirre was great but at QB he wasn’t nearly the passers Rivera Martinez or Nava were. The current Rosemead QB reminds me of Lee, Ivan Ostry. He runs better than he passes and plays lights out on defense. As a pure playmaker, he wasn’t better than Cogburn. Tom Cogburn was a man amongst boys, His speed was crazy. also this list is for an all decade team not an all time team. All Decade meaning 2010-2020. Thanks for bringing up Lee though. He was a great to watch.

    Friday knights
Nice to see your return to the blogs my dude
I’m drawing a blank on Hunter Duran.

@Mr.Goldbricker your right about all these players being listed but you have to admit El Montes defense this year is doing some speacial things. People can say transfers this transfers that but they have 2 local el monte boys who have come in and improved the defense from last years team.

    I thought I read 00-19 my bad.

For the last 15+ years I’ve seen every standout from the MVL and Booth is on top of it. But I could totally see Martinez, Sumler, Tovar, Rivera and Cogburn all getting picks.

I’d love to see a 00-09 roster vs a 10-19 roster on paper and we vote who wins. Those 04, 05 Arroyo team along with the 05 South team and 08 Mead team on that roster vs guys from early 10s EM teams, Arroyo championship 16 and quarterfinal 17 team and these last two EM teams. Tim, Joe come on get a list going.

Lee Aguirre is by far the best MVL player since 2000 period.
2 time all American at Fullerton college

I’ll chime in on this all decade team.
First and foremost at QB is Steven Rivera. He’s the best of the decade hands down.
Brandon Martinez is second. Most passing yards in MVL history.
At RB, Sal Tovar took over games when everyone knew who was getting the ball and he still rushed for insane numbers.
Devon Booth is probably the most electric player of the decade.
At Receiver, Anthony Miller and Hunter Duran were phenomenal. Jordan Parham size and speed was unguardable Ehhhhh I’ll throw in Sahagun as well. Big target

How they heck did I forget BMart!
    You’re right
    Ok new list
    Brandon Martinez
    Steven Rivera
    Sal Tovar
    Devon Booth
    Michael Sahagun
    Abel Barajas
    Jordan Parham
    Anthony Miller

  19. November 18, 2019 - 9:21 pm | Permalink

    Sumler wasn’t from the decade.
    So I didn’t include him.

Nice list can’t disagree with who’s on there. But you’ve missed four guys Abel Cueva (EM) Leander Benjamin (MV), Brandon Martinez (EM), Lee Aguirre (SEM) and Ronnie Williams (Arroyo)

    1. Booth
    2. T.Sumler
    3. T.Cognurn
    4. Martinez
    5. Sahagun
    6. Rivera
    7. Benjamin
    8. Williams
    9. Nava
    10. A.Barajas

I say Booth not being biased but look at the amount of carries he’s getting averaging something like 11 a game. In two years 80 touchdowns. One game against Rosemead last year he had more tds than he got tackled. Sumler just like Booth turned it on in the playoffs. Rivera and Martinez studs could easily switch spots.

Brandon Martinez was better than both those guys. His senior year was double Nava’s Jr and Sr year. And Brandon did more than Rivera is their last two years. Granted, he won less than Rivera but one could say Arroyo had better overall teams. Good topic, Mr Goldbricker.

The transfer express keeps on rolling! Who’s the next stud RB to transfer? Or will C leave after he wins his ring and take his transfers with him?

Booth by all accounts is a humble kid. But let’s not pretend he isn’t a superstar so of course he gets a lot of credit. Nothing wrong with that. EM defense is a neutralizer, they fly to the football. Good star good supporting cast and a great defense equals another deep run. Speaking of superstars…
I’ve been following MVL for right around a decade. I love watching the great ones. With that said I’m not sure if Booth isn’t the best play maker in that span. I saw Tom Cogburn from SEM who I’ve always regarded as the best player I’ve ever seen in the MVL. I think Booth is on that level. He’s better than EMs Roy Barajas who was pretty damn good. Is Booth better than Rosemeads Sumler or SEM Sal Tovar? Not sure. I would say Sumler and Tovar were both better pure Runningbacks but I gotta think Booth is a better playmaker than both of them. Now that I’m pondering this, let’s make an all decade team 2010-2019 Two QBs Two RBs 4 Receivers/tight ends
    Top of my head
    Steven Rivera Arroyo
    Steven Nava Rosemead
    Devon Booth El Monte
    Sal Tovar South El Monte
    Jordan Parham Rosemead
    Micheal Sahagun Rosemead
    Abel Barajas El Monte
    Antony Miller Arroyo
    What do you guys think?

I’ve been to most of the games this year, I think I just missed Mtn View and Sotomayor. Most of those touchdowns given up this year are by back ups and jv guys. Half of Glenn’s TDs, one of rosemeads and souths and one of ocean views and Nordhoffs. This defense is also on another level with their offense.
