Here we go again… Ok you win sir, every LS player lives within 2 minutes of LS high school, LS plays with nothing but 5’5 120lb kids with no experience, not one kid on the team is in another schools enrollment area, great job LS you have no advantage over anyone because of open enrollment, in fact it is a large disadvantage.

bunch of cry babies talking about LS and this whole open enrollment crap

come check out a practice and you tell me that we have “the best of the best” from literally everywhere according to the crockpot “dh” post

LS started winning when they changed the offense in 2010 and never looked back. couple that with making great additions to the coaching staff and you have the recipe for a successful program.

you can miss me with this whole all-star BS. We don’t recruit like La Habra, La Mirada, St. Paul, Charter Oak, Amat and so on and so forth.

Stop living in the pass? Yeah, that sounds like good advice; we’ll probably win more games as soon as we do a better job of establishing the run. Eating up time, and scoring points in the process, is a long-established recipe for playing winning football.
If you actually meant “living in the past,” I was simply trying to clarify things for those who might not have a thorough understanding of the Alhambra program’s past or present.
I believe our coaches and players have the ability to work through our current issues. If we succeed, then our future could be a pretty good one.

I would be remiss if I did not explain the magnitude of what Coaches Ruedaflores and Torres did accomplish as football coaches at Alhambra High School. I want to do this especially for the benefit of those who aren’t familiar with their stories.
The Alhambra varsity had only one winning season in the previous 16 years before Gil Ruedaflores became head coach in 1989. During that time, the team compiled an overall record of 48-103-4 under his four immediate predecessors (Lowell Johnson, Emmett Menasco, Gary Neeley, and Dave Lawson).
Alhambra’s only winning season (and playoff appearance) in the period of 1973 to 1988 occurred in ’78, when Menasco led the Moors to a 7-5 record and a trip to the CIF semifinals.
In his 21-year tenure, Ruedaflores coached the varsity to an overall record of 111-110-2, and his teams appeared in the postseason 12 times. On the downside, his playoff coaching record was 2-12.
When Ruedaflores retired in late 2009, he was succeeded by Torres, who compiled a record of 13-9 in two seasons as head coach and led Alhambra to the CIF Division 11 quarterfinals in 2011.
Coaches Ruedaflores and Torres indeed made the Moors competitive in football again. They also made a positive impact on many players over the years, as well as on their students at Alhambra High.

@Ron I agree that Eric has changed the program and to my knowledge runs a clean program but during the late Gil years recruiting was a staple of the program so it’s not above Alhambra to do that. Same goes for the Steve’s baseball program, recruiting was a staple at Alhambra back in the day.

I would love to see him at a school like Glendora, Charter Oak, La Serna, etc. I was a little disappointed he ended up at Sierra Vista. Would have been fun to see what he could do with the big boys. I have no doubt he’ll bring a few dudes in and win it again at SV. It takes more than a few dudes at better schools.

ER has gotten out of the 1st round of the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 times 2016, 2018, 2019, in 2021 we had the privilege to lose to Leuzinger a team who had LB poly on the ropes, as far as winning a CIF title if we don’t get put in a division with a handful of monsters like Aquinas, Pasadena, Mira Costa, Leuzinger then we might have a shot

@ Moor for Life: I don’t know where you got that angle from, because I’ve been one of Coach Bergstrom’s biggest supporters ever since he took over the Alhambra High football program in 2013.
Talk about trying to “flip the script.” I wasn’t including the “Gil years,” which ended in the period between 2009, when Coach Ruedaflores retired, and late 2011, when his longtime top assistant, Lou Torres, was abruptly removed as head coach.
You need to read my previous comments on this thread more closely. I said, “Outright recruiting/poaching players from other high school programs ISN’T the way we do business.”
I wrote in the present tense for a reason; my reference was strictly to the approach that we’ve taken under Coach Bergstrom for the last nine years.
I’ve been with the program since 2003, so I was painfully aware of the difficult situation that Coach Bergstrom inherited. A chaotic 18-month period, one that included two head coaching failures at AHS, followed Coach Torres’ departure from the program in late 2011.
The timing of the school administration’s decision to replace Coach Torres (following a 9-3 season) has always struck me as bizarre. I still don’t fully understand it. However, I was aware that there was a lot of drama going on behind the scenes involving some parents, the former booster club, and the admin. The varsity team’s on-the-field performance in 2011 could not have been the real issue.
Coaches Ruedaflores and Torres deserve much credit for taking over a moribund AHS football program in 1989 and making it competitive again. It was grueling work that they carried out over the course of two decades.
But, yes, at least in their later years, there was some recruiting of players from the Eastside. (That was a development I wasn’t aware of until 2010.) In addition, there were aspects of the football culture, such as the behavior of some players on campus, that needed to be changed.
Coach Bergstrom has taken the program in a better direction, and he’s received a lot of heat for it from people on here. We at Alhambra are fortunate that he has had the fortitude to stay the course for as long as he has.
Several years of rebuilding under Coach Bergstrom culminated in the outstanding seasons of 2018 (8-2) and 2019 (12-1). Then Covid-19 hit, and the Alhambra program, along with many others, has had to start rebuilding again. But, as I said earlier, we are not giving up on this season; it’s a fact that some rebuilding projects proceed faster than others.

Take the best kids from LS area, Whittier High area, Cal High Area, Pioneer area, Santa Fe area, Norwalk area, with a few sprinkled in from La Mirada, La Habra and Pico Rivera and you get what we call La Serna football. I don’t understand the unwillingness to accept they have an enrollment advantage over so many teams. You know how Long Beach Poly proposed to compete with Bosco and Mater Dei? By making LBUSD an open enrollment district, following that WUHSD model. Almost impossible for anyone in the Del Rio to compete with LS, the one team who could compete would be El Rancho, they would have to get all their pico kids which they don’t, pull a bunch of Montebello kids and maybe a few from El Monte, East LA, BG, probably hard because ER is not about that recruiting life, they just coach whoever comes through that door. No one else in the Del Rio will ever compete with LS because of open enrollment. Of course LS has a good staff, but sometimes coaching comes easy when you get so many solid kids with size, experience etc. accept how great your program is, no matter how it came to be.

…continuing with a discussion about “fundraising” from the “Game Night: Week 4” thread…I am a bit perplexed with the perception of fundraising and its ability to leverage an advantage in one program over another. With the exception of private schools, where fundraising could very well assist to offset tuition costs (…or dare I say provide a “free ride”) for recruited player’s families, the vast majority of schools highlighted in MVS are public schools…everyone gets free tuition!!! So help me to understand where “fundraising” factors into the equation. Its no secret I am a LS parent based on my prior posts (which amusingly was vastly criticized). I can tell you the LS “Football Club” works their tails off to provide a great experience for the athletes and families. The bottom line is…LS has participated in the same “7 on 7” tournaments as many other schools covered by MVS every spring and summer. They don’t wear the latest, most expensive uniforms money can buy. Their equipment is good, but again, not necessarily the latest, most expensive gear money can buy. If any of the LS critics out there were to see the player’s locker room, you may have been shocked (although it did get a very needed facelift and new coat of paint this year). With exception to a game or two, the players still ride school buses to their games, not fancy chartered buses.

LS has…and has had…a top notch coaching staff. Period. The coaches (some of them teachers as well) are not a high paid, high profile college/pro coaching staff. They are regular folks who genuinely care about their players. The coaches prepare the players thoroughly for the season’s beginning throughout the spring and summer…and each week thereafter throughout the season.

LS does not have a Pop Warner/Jr. All American youth football program that feeds them players year after year. They are not transfer heavy like many of the schools covered in MVS (that has never been part of LS’s culture). The vast majority of the players are scrappy kids with big hearts from within the WUHSD…plain and simple.

….so when you boil it down…it comes down to coaching and the players…players that trust their coaches and each other that they can win no matter the odds (there is no quit in this team)…it’s an attitude, not money that makes a winning team/program.

So, help me understand how “fundraising” factors into the conversation. My last post received quite a bit a criticism….I’ve just accepted there are legions of LS haters out there. I get it. Its easy to hate on a winning program. Let’s see what fury this post stirs up….

Warren really sold their soul for that kid Nico. He’s a player don’t get me wrong. Not to play this week which is not the issue, but to be on the sidelines with no jersey and headphones on, dancing. Come on. A lot of their players dunking the ball on a TD or flipping into the end zone. I don’t remember that stuff at Cathedral Coach. This attitude isn’t it. Ghetto for sure:

@ MVSer: It’s interesting that you’d make the “freshman stud” comment. Alhambra already has a freshman quarterback whom we don’t need to wait any longer for.
Bryan Leonard has great potential, and once he gets a little more experience, he could be that stud. Who knows, maybe even before the end of this season, which is just another reason why we play the games.
Player development within your own program can be a great thing.

No way Cisneros gets the Damien job. The double wing will not work at D1-D4 schools. You don’t see the double wing in the NFL or college football for a reason. If you are undermanned than you have to be creative on offense. If you have the horses to run the ball than there’s no need to pass. Cisneros goes out and gets players. If everything is equal, like in D1-D4 than the double wing will get shut down with 9 guys in the box.
I have been to a few Damien games this year and the big problem is the offense. I know the coach is old school and that the offensive problem. He still runs the two back offense with a TE. Damien has good players, the defense is lights out, but the offense lacks innovation. He has got to bring in an OC or Damien will be 3-7 every year. That’s the only problem I see with Damien because all the other things are done right to run a great program. The thing is he calls the plays. Maybe he is smart enough to bring in an OC before they let him go.

  30. September 17, 2022 - 8:57 pm | Permalink

Ron, to add to your coaching assessment. Just because coaches aren’t doing a very good job doesn’t mean you can just get rid of them. To just go get another coach isn’t easy. Majority of the coaches need to have a teaching position at school and if one isn’t available you can’t get that coach you want. Also, there is salary issue involved that comes with job. Not all districts pay the same. Needless to say there are many factors involved to replace a coach.

If you have players from other programs that aren’t happy you got to let them know what you could do for them. That’s how it work. Call it recruiting or whatever. Can’t wait for the next freshmen stud to come in when you have a second string QB somewhere you know would do good in your offense wasting away. Can’t get over the hump. Look around. It’s that time.

@ Anonymous (the one talking anonymously about Alhambra): Nope, that’s not going to happen. However, we did play poorly last night, which in large part explains why we lost to South Pasadena.
Outright recruiting/poaching players from other high school programs isn’t the way we do business; the coaches you so intensely covet for AHS will never get hired there for that very reason.
In addition, the football program at Alhambra has pretty much been back since the start of the 2018 season; our varsity has compiled a record of 28-14 and a league title during that time. We made the CIF semifinals in 2019 and last year as well.
We’ve struggled during the Covid-19 era, as have many other programs. We’re three games under .500 since the beginning of the pandemic, and we’re doing our best to work our way through it.
Our player numbers have gone up somewhat, but we still have a bunch of guys who don’t have a ton of game experience. Nevertheless, the coaches are working hard with the team and trying to bring it along as quickly as possible. We are not giving up on this season.
