Benjamin Cortez and the Conquerors are undefeated through the first five games.
Six of the 12 teams had byes last week meaning there wasn’t a lot of movement. Charter Oak had a big win over St. Francis while Damien came up short against Servite. Los Altos prevailed over El Rancho in a hard-fought battle.
1. Bishop Amat (4-1) – After bye Lancers get Serra this week.
2. Bonita (5-0) – Bearcats open Sierra League play this week with Colony.
3. Charter Oak (5-0) – Solid win over St. Francis for unbeaten Chargers.
4. La Serna (4-1) – La Serna travels to Warren for Gateway League opener.
5. Damien (3-3) – No rest for the weary; Spartans get Chino Hills to begin Baseline League play.
6. Los Altos (5-0) – Gutsy win for Conquerors to stay undefeated.
7. Rio Hondo Prep (5-1) – Kares have quietly gone 5-1.
8. La Mirada (4-1) – Matadores rested up as Gateway League begins.
9. Baldwin Park (4-1) – Donovan St Cyr has 323 yards and six touchdowns receiving so far.
10. Nogales (5-0) – Nobles look for sixth straight win this week against Montclair.
11. St. Francis (2-3) – Tough loss for Golden Knights; Cathedral next.
12. El Rancho (4-2) – Dons are clearly the favorites in the Metro League.
@BHF …. That’s a possibility in D8or 9 . That’s life in the new CIF , it’s a lottery system of playoff divisional placement and seeding where you get rewarded for losing just the right number of games .
I used to have a CIF championship as ultimate goal , now not a big deal to me
Their were 2 pretty bad examples last year I think of teams that had extremely tough schedules, meaning they had a bad record but got lucky and got put in extremely low divisions, meaning they could be in and potentially make runs. Those were 1-9 San Juan Hills in D2 (they had to forfeit their entire season except 1 game but still made it somehow and even for some reason hosted 9-1 Downey and beat them on a walkoff field goal). The other was 2-8 Upland in D6 who thankfully got eliminated by St Pius in round 2 but that caused 10-0 Los Altos to get screwed by having them go on the road to face Upland and they clearly weren’t at the Highlanders level. I’m worried if like St Paul defeats let’s say, Bishop Montgomery and St Pius, and gets an at large in like D10 or D9 at 3-7. While St Paul shouldn’t even be close to the playoffs if they get can’t an auto bid (they won’t), with how the system is it’s gonna end like this and then they are gonna like win the whole thing I feel like which would absolutely suck for all of the teams in the division with them.
@FBF …. Like when 1-9 Pius X hosted 0-10 Cypress in first round . And went on to win CIF and State !!
Really embarrassing , CIF goes by a strict set of rules until they need ( or want ) to bend them .
@?
If you are an automatic qualifier from your league, the overall record doesn’t matter. Automatic qualifiers will immediately be placed in playoffs.
If you are not an automatic qualifier and looking for an at large bid, the teams that have a .500 record within your division (calpreps rating) get priority for the at large. However, several divisions will have at large teams who don’t have a .500 record therefore the team with the highest rating per calpreps will get the at large playoff bid. This is particularly true in the middle divisions.
There was a rule change this year, however, that a team must have a minimum of 3 wins in order to be considered for an at large bid at all. This was the result of several 1-9 and 2-8 teams making deep playoff runs in unfair divisions.
I thought I read somewhere that you had to have a winning record this year to get a playoff spot. Is that true or is there any minimum requirement?
I find these divisional placements very interesting. I think that D1-D5 and D12-D14 are good parameters and the right teams are placed correctly. However, there are some major coin flips and some major imbalances when you look at D6-D11. This is where you’ll see some teams unfairly placed. From D6-D8 you’ll see teams who had good seasons who have no chance against some teams who have had bad seasons like Los Altos and Upland last season. This is also the range where you see traditionally good teams have bad seasons but then go onto CIF title runs while a team with generational talent gets the shaft by being placed too high. From D9-D11 you’ll see some pretty athletic teams who should probably be higher make a run in these divisions
El Rancho in D7 or D8 would be solid, very easily could’ve been 10-0 and had a D6 even D5 playoff berth which would’ve been terrible.
While I expect La Serna to beat Warren this week, it needs to be said that the Bears present far more of an obstacle than did any the Lancers’ Del Rio foes. It’s about time CIF stopped giving LS an unofficial vacation when it comes to league play.
It is a odd thing to think as an El Rancho watcher but in this era ER is fortunate to lose to La Mirada and Los Altos. Two games they could have easily won making them 6-0 and staring at a 10-0 season. That would have placed them in a least D6 and a first round loss against teams that ER does not have the talent to match, Now Los Altos is facing that prospect. I don’t like AI deciding who plays who after the fact. Los Altos, La Serna, Bishop Amat etc. will not be rewarded for playing great early on but punished by playing great teams that have had a few losses early on in the first round. La Serna play ing Los Alamitos, Los Altos playing Downey, Amat playing SM. Doesn’t seem right. St. Paul gets a 15 game season in D10
Cathedral is waiting. The Phantoms will win this one Big.
As someone who has been hating on them for a while, Muir should be in the top 12 if they can beat Redondo Union without a QB basically.
