That’s the question I asked Arroyo’s Steven Rivera after last Friday’s disappointing loss to San Dimas.

“(The) day after it sucked,” said Rivera. “The day went by slow. Tried to watch college football but still I would give anything to play another friday this year. Just have to wait til next year (laugh). But we learn, grow from it, and remember our great season.”

And what about when his game tying touchdown was called back?

“I was in total shock because of the way it happened. One second you’re in total joy and then it is all taken away from you in a matter of four seconds. Seeing all of my boys sit in the locker room down and out is the worst.”

Final thoughts?

“We put in tremendous amouts of work as did our great coaches,” said Rivera. “I’m proud of our team and how we played throughout the entire year.”

***

“I am pleased with the way we came out against BG,” said Whittier Christian HC Sergio Gradilla. “I am not pleased with how we finished offensively. Defensively we shut them out all night, so I am very pleased with that. We are going to need another great defensive effort this Friday night against a very good Covina team.
“We are not healthy going into this game. We lost our middle linebacker Tim Sanchez for the season with a torn ligament in his foot. He injured it against Village Christian, we thought it was turf toe but he got an x-ray and it was revealed. We have a couple of guys that will not practice for the week, but will play on Friday night. I will never use the injury thing as an excuse, we will line up and play on Friday night with what we have. It will be a fun night!”

***

Last Add Tim Sanchez: Whittier Christian linebacker, playing only nine games, was in on 86 tackles and 4.5 sacks this season.

***

Note From Sunday: The Junior Pee Wee title (its time to come up with a better name than ‘pee wee’) went to the much acclaimed Rosemead Rebels as they rolled Montebello 26-0 at Duarte High School.

Both teams entered the contest 9-0, but it was the Rebels defense inspired by Head Coach Alex Gonzalez and Defensive Coordinator Nick Lasoya that brought the championship back to Mead. The Rebel defense, which only allowed seven points all season (that coming in the semifinals against Glendora), did not give up a first down on Sunday.

Keying the action on the field was Nick “BooBoo” Lasyoa (Jr.) and Andrew Perez.

***

The Mid: Is everybody healthy going into the Maranatha game?

SD HC Bill Zernickow: No, we have a lot of injuries.

The Mid: Your team reminds me of a boxer who has taken a lot of punches but can’t be knocked off his legs…

SD HC Zernickow: But, you need to win the decisions!

The Mid: And I have to ask…for the briefest of moments, on that last play against Arroyo, did you get a little sick to your stomach?

SD HC Zernickow: No, I was thinking of over time.
