There was a time when the NBA All-Star Game really meant something.<\/p>\n

80.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That was the last number given to me regarding those who have applied to become the next head football coach at Maranatha.<\/p>\n

Less than 10.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s number it has been whittled down to with interviews commencing next week.<\/p>\n

Four Quarters.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Is all that is left of the football season.<\/p>\n

Two Weeks.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s how long I was supposed to last at the Mid Valley News.<\/p>\n

Once<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Is the number of times I\u2019d like the \u201cNo Huddle\u201d<\/em> guys, Sunshine & Omelette, buy dinner after a Tuesday show.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Maranatha do you know who Josh Chamberlain is?<\/p>\n

Well Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was the guy that saved the country on Little Round Top during the fighting on the second day at Gettysburg.<\/p>\n

Josh Chamberlain, on the other hand, is a basketball player at Maranatha who is tearing it up. The senior captain closed out January and opened February by pushing the Minutemen into first place in the Olympic League.<\/p>\n

Against a one loss Pasadena Poly team he dropped in 29, followed that three nights later with 19 against Valley Christian, and then against the CIF Division 4A #2 ranked Whittier Christian Heralds he scored 24.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s done all this while being injured and unable to practice at full speed.<\/p>\n

Talk about fixing bayonets…<\/p>\n

You know Erick Escamilla was at South El Monte, you know Ray Hernandez replaced him, and we found out this week that Ibis Aguilar became the fourth HC in school history\u2026But do any of you out there remember who the Eagles first HC was?<\/p>\n

Hint: He also HC\u2019d at Mt. View.<\/p>\n

Word thrown at me for 2011 in a recent email back and forth: Pomona. \u201cJoe, keep your eye on Pomona.\u201d I agreed, although I didn\u2019t have the same energy the fellow on the other end of the line did.<\/p>\n

Question Two: Does anybody out there know what Maranatha means?<\/p>\n

Whittier Christian HC Sergio Gradilla has lost a key member of his staff. Kevin Oberlander has been named head coach at Western Christian in Upland, California.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re excited to add Coach Oberlander to our coaching staff,\u201d said Western Christian Athletic Director Nick Karavedas. \u201cFor a young coach, he brings a lot of experience from the college level to his most recent experience at Whittier Christian High School.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oberlander, a graduate of Atwater High School, played college football at Trinity University outside of Chicago. In 2004, while playing quarterback, he earned MVP honors for the Mid-States Conference and was an All-American that season as he led his team to the NAIA playoffs. After college played Arena Football in Omaha, Nebraska and coached quarterbacks at Trinity.<\/p>\n

For the last three seasons he has served as quarterbacks coach at Whittier Christian as well as assistant offensive coordinator.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoach Oberlander understands that building a quality football program begins with building quality young men.\u00a0 Were excited about what he brings and for the future. His vision for biblical football at Western Christian includes developing and teaching the players to \u2018Love, Lead and Compete.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Buena Park HC Anthony White is\u00a0putting together\u00a0a passing tournament. The \u201cCoyote Passing Competition\u201d is scheduled for Saturday, July 23rd<\/sup>\u2026and openings are available.<\/p>\n
