(La Habra) \u2013 Whittier Christian\u2019s Maddie Perez made plays all over the field, including batting in the game-winning run, to lead the Lady Heralds to a 1-0 victory over the visiting La Serna.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is the most focused player on this field,\u201d said Head coach Dale Van Duyn of Perez. \u201cShe\u2019s doing a good job running the infield.\u201d<\/p>\n
The run came in the first inning.<\/p>\n
Lancers pitcher Jackie Valdez found early trouble.\u00a0 In the bottom of the first, Reanna Lopez hit a triple to center field. Perez connected on a pitch after a long battle with Valdez, recording a RBI double.<\/p>\n
La Serna responded with four hits in the second inning, but were unable to convert any runs.<\/p>\n
Whittier Christian had the opportunity to score more runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, the Heralds had Lopez on third and Richelle Coberly on first with Perez up to bat. The Lancers handled a Perez\u2019s grounder and tagged Coberly out at second to end the threat.<\/p>\n
For the Heralds, Pitcher Bekah Kikuchi finished with two strikeouts and only seven hits against her.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe pitched an incredible game against good hitters,\u201d said Van Duyn. \u201cBest game I\u2019ve seen her throw all season.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Lancers never advanced a runner past second.<\/p>\n
It was the Lancers first game in ten days.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur hitting was off today,\u201d said La Serna coach Ginger Larsin. \u201cWith such a long layoff, it affected us just little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Lancers will be busy the upcoming days, playing 7 games in four days.
