With the vacancy of NFL OTAs and mini-camps prep football is starting to get bigger and bigger audiences. Once only attended by parents and coaches, driving their athletes, passing league competitions were rarely discussed or even an actual significant part of the off-season.

I’ve always thought of passing league as a way to just create a sort of chemistry for players. These games don’t really prepare players for game situations. Especially for QB’s, it probably helps to bring out bad habits such as patting the ball, no making proper reads, holding on to the ball, and forgetting the feel of a pass rush.

But now in the midst of possibly not seeing an NFL season start in September fans are beginning to venture out to more local distractions. More and more fans have shown interest in high school football. Fans have now come out to see local stars. It’s great to see interest beginning to grow within the prep football atmosphere.

The word coming out of South Pasadena High School is that with the graduation of Conor Bednarski, two sophomore quarterbacks are now competing for the starting spot.

“Joey Harmon is competing for QB for varsity along with fellow sophomore Kiran Reina,” stated South Pas Head Coach Martin Konrad. “We’ll see what this summer brings via passing games.”

Harmon is the front runner of the two sophomores.

Harmon knows he will need to work hard and diligently to become a sophomore star this fall.

“I like a lot of things about Connor not just his strong arm but is very quick with his feet in the pocket and is very mobile making him a dual threat,” said Harmon of Bednarski.

“I like the quick reads and adjustments he makes before and during the play. I learned that the game moves quick up at the varsity level and I have to think very quickly. I am very thankful for all Connor has taught me and I am very lucky to have such a great predecessor and will try to fill the big shoes he has left the best I can.”

Look out for several wide outs to stand out for Harmon this fall such as Bryan Bednarski, Justin Cornford, Hector Fernandez, Yee Hi Han, and Nathan lee.

“Things are progressing, Harmon is getting better,” and it will be a “whole new ball game in pads.” Coach Konrad said of his QB.

By Saile Ramirez Now more than ever it seems that local high school football is the top priority.
