The only ones that can beat the Knights are well…the Knights themselves. It starts with four year starting quarterback Steven Rivera. The southpaw has thrown for over 5000 yards in just three years and is a consummate leader. But it’s not just Rivera. There are pass catchers in Hunter Duran and Andre Kerkhoff and Peter Aholoka seems ready to fill the void at running back left by the graduated Mikey Vasquez.

The line is solid as well led by Omar Partida and Jesus Rios. Defensively Rivera, and Kerkhoff will go both ways playing in the secondary and Eddie Federico and Christian Gutierrez will play key roles at linebacker.

Rosemead looks good for second. We’ve been hearing about El Monte or possibly even Mt. View sneaking in to the second slot but the Panthers will be there. They’ll do what they always do – run the ball and play defense. They have a new quarterback in Adan Guillen but he only needs to manage the game. Matt Eddy and Andrew Gibson will pound the ball behind a solid line led by Sal Chavarin.

Marc Paramo’s defense has always been tough and this year should be no different with Gibson, Christian Garcia, Mike Chavez, Dominic Salas and Lupe Perez on the line leading the way. Danny Villalobos will join Perez up front and play tight end as well.

El Monte has a new quarterback in Brandon Martinez. Manual Santa Cruz is still there but Martinez has replaced him as the starter. Memo Silva is a talented wide receiver for Martinez to throw to. The Lions have some size up front led by 6-3, 265 pound Jesse Gaytan. The Lions should finish no worse than third and they could push Rosemead.

Mt. View’s new offense and a .500 record last year have everybody excited. Jose Zamora could fill the shoes of Jossymar Ulloa. Kaivon Flores and Ignacio Castaneda will join the running attack. But the Vikings are still young, especially up front and it could take a year or two before a playoff appearance.

Gabrielino and South El Monte will battle to stay out of the cellar. Gabrielino finished 4-6 last year but 1-4 in league. There doesn’t appear to be much help on the way this year.

South let Coach Ray Hernandez go after a 1-9 campaign go and replaced him with Ibis Aguilar. The Eagles will need a year or two to adjust to Aguilar’s system and get back on track. QB Henry Mascorro is a bright spot for the Southmen.

Projected order of finish: 1. Arroyo – Coach Jim Singsier 2.
