(Grant Escobar scored behind Rudy Robles & Jeff Worthy in the Heralds 43-42 victory.)

Do you think coaches ever let potential criticism influence a decision to go for two and the win?

The reason I ask is because so many of us are geniuses after the fact…especially your local sportswriter(s)…and bloggers…

Anyone remember Arroyo wide receiver Marcos Sanchez? As a sophomore on the Knights 2004 semifinal team he was the “Other Guy”. The “Guy” at receiver was Sergio Leon, but Sanchez in three varsity seasons caught 111 passes, 16 of them going for touchdowns.

However, on this night five years ago Sanchez had back to back brain freezes. In the first half against Alhambra, at Bergstrom, he let two kick-offs bounce in front of him and roll as if they were punts.

When the first one happened it was disbelief as the Moors recovered. When the second one happened it was one of the most amazing moments I’ve ever had on a sideline.

When a game is going on, I don’t rap with anybody. I definitely don’t question the ref audibly, I don’t question any play calling, or offer suggestions…My job is to be a ghost.

When the second kick-off bounced and rolled to a stop inside the 10 yard line, on the Arroyo side at the south end of Bergstrom, something rose in my throat that hasn’t since. As time seemed to stop and people all around were screaming, this combination of compassion and frustration erupted from me. I yelled: “PICK UP THE BALL KID!”

Fortunately no one heard me, because they were hollering louder than me…As the Moors recovered.

How can I describe the post game interview with His Arroyo Baldness after Alhambra took a 42-27 victory? Mmm? Not only were Sanchez’s muffs present in Jim Singiser’s thoughts, but so was the fact his team couldn’t stop the run even after Anthony Brown and Du’Shine Smith (135 yards 3 Tds) went out with injuries and Zion Babb finished at tailback for Gil Ruedaflores, hurdling a cornerback on a sweep.

Brown scored two touchdowns even though he only had two carries and was injured in the first quarter. One came on a 20-yard run. The other on a 42-yard punt return.

“I told my punter; ‘do not kick him the ball’,” said Singiser. “And what does he do? He kicks it right to the middle of the field.” (The rest was off the record and possibly a violation of some rage code)

Same night in San Gabriel quasi Mid Valley staffer Saile Ramirez threw three picks in Temple City’s 18-6 victory over the Matadors. For TC Dwight Broadnax rushed for 125 yards and a score, while defensive back Yosef Feidi took an interception to the house.

Lost to Time Department: On September 22, 2006 SG running back Ulyses Lopez carried the ball 15 times for 111 yards and a touchdown.
