The Mid hates it when key players go down. It takes too much away from the game when both teams aren’t at full strength. A running back or wide receiver is bad enough but when the QB is out? – Not cool.

However backup Daniel Sifuentes can play. He gets out of the pocket well and also can throw it down the field. He proved it Friday night with a couple of touchdown passes against Walnut.

“He was the starter on the freshman team. Daniel has done a good job for us,” said Covina Coach Darryl Thomas.

We won’t know about Livingston until Tuesday when he has an MRI. With or without Mr. Livingston, I like Covina to beat Pomona.

LP New King of Montview?

While you can make the case that Azusa (0-3) has played a much tougher schedule than La Puente (3-0) you can also make a case for La Puente as the best team in the Montview. True, Azusa has had a three game death march in San Dimas, Maranatha and Don Lugo but the Aztecs haven’t really competed losing the three games by an average of 20 points per contest. LP has scored 106 points (just over 35 points per game) against its three opponents- El Monte, Northview and Wilson while winning by an average of 12 points per game.

We won’t find out who is best until week 10 when the Warriors travel to Citrus College to take on the Aztecs. The good news is both teams will get a shot in the playoffs.

Surging Saints

Since losing the Smudgepot in Zero Week San Dimas has been white hot. The Saints have outscored their opponents 131-22 in that three game span including last week’s 31-14 trouncing of Monrovia. Don’t try to lay it on cupcakes either. Besides the defending CIF Mid-Valley Champion Wildcats, San Dimas has also beat up defending Montview League Champ Azusa, and Almont contender San Gabriel. Domonic Jollevet (great name, 295 yards) and Devante Brown (402 yards) are leading a devastating rushing attack. The onslaught should continue in two weeks against Nogales.

Hart Attack

The best thing about Arroyo’s game with Hart is that everybody came away unscathed. Nobody got hurt, everybody is in tact and Steven Rivera threw for 283 yards. The Knights have a bye this week, then travel to La Canada October 7 before opening MVL play at Mt. View October 14.

The Cats Meow

A lot of people were speculating about whether or not Monrovia could go undefeated before the season started (ok I was one of them). Now, with South Hills waiting for M-Town Friday night, there’s a good chance that the Wildcats could lose their third straight game. They have had their struggles on both sides of the ball but it’s been painful especially defensively with Monrovia allowing 61 points the past two games. Last year Monrovia was also 1-2 heading into the South Hills game and beat the Huskies to start an 11 game winning streak that culminated with a CIF Title.

Don’t Doubt the South

If I’m a South El Monte fan I’m not ready to plan a championship parade down Durfee Avenue. However after last year’s disastrous 1-9 season I am excited about Ibis Aguilar and the Eagles starting off 3-0. Ganesha, Workman and Nogales aren’t world beaters but the Southmen have taken care of business in all of those games. Last year Nogales beat South 40-19, while this season the Eagles turned the tables on the Nobles with a 28-16 win last Friday night.

We’ll know a little more about the Eagles in the next two weeks when they go up against Temple City and Bell Gardens. They get Arroyo in week seven. I’m still not convinced they can get a playoff spot in the MVL. But as they say in SEM- “Don’t doubt the South”.

That’s my principle.

Tim can be reached at tim@midvalleysports.com

Mr. Livingston I Presume We’re hoping Covina quarterback Billy Livingston can play against Pomona Friday.
