(Bellflower) \u2013 The La Mirada Matadors came out quick and ready while the Mayfair Monsoons came out flat in a 44-14 Suburban League loss at Ron Yary Stadium Friday night.<\/p>\n
From the opening whistle the Matadors played with intensity and energy while the Monsoons looked lethargic. For La Mirada Johnny Hills had a big game running through arm tackles and chewing up yardage on his way to a 153-yard performance on 19 carries with a score.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal this year was to run the football. That\u2019s what this program is built on,\u201d La Mirada head coach Mike Moschetti said.<\/p>\n
And 43 out of 48 plays they did just that.<\/p>\n
Hills\u2019 touchdown provided the first points of the game when he broke through the Monsoons\u2019 defensive line, reaching the second level after breaking several tackles on his way to 31-yard jaunt.<\/p>\n
La Mirada got its next points thanks to a Mayfair gaffe on special teams when a would-be punt sailed over Osborn Umeh\u2019s head resulting in a safety.<\/p>\n
On the next Matador possession, signal caller Gerry Myres then found receiver Angelo Cantu in the corner of the endzone to put his team up 16-0.<\/p>\n
La Mirada wasn\u2019t done yet, to end the first quarter, Ruben Ponce De Leon went 55-yards on a punt return concluding an explosive first half for the Matadors and a miserable one for the Monsoons.<\/p>\n
Mayfair was able to muster up some offense to begin the second half. Quarterback Christian Woo feigned several tackles and found enough time to float a fade to receiver Jerry Smith who elevated over his defender to inch the Monsoons closer, 23-7.<\/p>\n
In the second half Mayfair was unable to find itself and continued to spiral out of control in all facets. Myres rushed for a score on a keeper and backup running back Adam Carrasco even found paydirt on a twelve yard run to make it 44-7.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo win this game we needed to have a full team effort, offensively, defensively and special teams,\u201d Moschetti said. \u201cBefore the game you could just see it in the kids eyes, they were prepared and they were ready.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both teams will play Thursday games next week as La Mirada (5-4) will prepare for Norwalk while Mayfair (6-3) will travel to Artesia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
