CIF football playoffs are absolutely boiling and you’re at a volleyball match? Did someone put a gun to your back?

My young friend don’t you know the prep football this time of year is not only good, is not only interesting, but it plays out in this triangular geography from Burbank to Bonita and down to Mayfair like the “Canon in D”…Not just bruising, not just smash mouth, but elegant, fragile, and as gorgeous as anything one can find on a stage or in fondest dreams…Like the “Canon” it speaks distinctively to our souls; to that which we aspire to be, to that which we hope we can be, and all the best we can hope for in others.

Beauty can be music, beauty can be in a painting, beauty can be a newborn…But right now, for the next few weeks, beauty can be found at Covina District, Ron Yary, Moor Field, B.L. Bergstrom, and Salter Stadium…And it goes by the name of; football.

The final between San Gabriel and Maranatha was 9-0, not 9-3 as is being reported in other places.

“I never miss the final score,” says Peterson. “Never.”

This is true, plus he never fails to bail before the check comes.

The last time Maranatha was shutout was December 5, 2008 in the semifinals against St. Margaret’s, 63-0.

The last time the Matadors goose egged an opponent not named Keppel? Mountain View, 48-0, in 2003. Of course that was the year they made it to the finals. It was also the last time they played Arroyo.

I know Mayfair people are probably not thrilled with me right now…but I think the Monsoons loss had less to do with old Joe T. and more to do with La Serna’s Frankie Palmer.

Note to Arcadia Fans: Get out and support your team…The Apaches have the only shot at dethroning West Covina.

When Alhambra needed it, DC Jacob Ochoa's troops provided it on the goal line against La Puente

Speaking of which…I believe it was a case of; “Touchdown Frazier! Touchdown Frazier!”

We should probably take a vote right now and name Los Altos HC Dale Ziola coach of the year.

I’ve been really hard on the Conquerors, mostly their fans, over the last few years and for good reason. The number of comments we’ve been forced to delete out of Los Altos has only been outdone by the number of comments we’ve been forced to delete from Wilson.

But let’s be honest…Ziola, his staff, and his team have done an amazing job. Amazing because this program was 0-10 last year and now they are in the quarterfinals. Credit also to the fan base, while always pushing it to the edge, each time I saw the Conquerors in 2010 the fans and boosters were there.

This is really the best story of the year especially when you think of what Scott Tibbs has suffered through since 2009, as well Shane Virnala and Justin Fa’aola in 2010. If you love football, if you love the ability to stick it out, you have to love these young men.

In his last 12 quarters of football, Arroyo’s Steven Rivera has accounted 15 touchdowns. With three more touchdown passes last night his career total is 91…That’s right, 91.

Last Add Arroyo: 26 of those touchdown passes have gone to Hunter Duran.

Speaking of southpaws…I’m sure Brandon Cox was the nightmare Jim Arnold and the rest of the Cal Condor family thought he was.

And since we’re talking about a Pasadena school…I’m sure Muir was exactly who the retiring Jack Mahlstede and his Chiefs Nation wanted to see in Week Eleven.

Despite claims otherwise, we had a feeling Brandon Martinez wouldn’t be playing for El Monte against Whittier Christian.

The question coming up from Beach Boulevard in La Habra is, is this win enough to sway opinion against Monrovia? The Wildcats have the personnel to match up with Cody Bronkar.

I hope Covina’s Geovontray Ainsworth ankle is in better shape than Martinez’s was for El Monte.

Did Southman Saul Bustos get enough credit for the season he had?

You have to feel for the Maranatha players and staff today. I’m gonna guess they’re going to swear off football for about a week.

When you make it to the quarterfinals, you are no longer cruising for a bruising…you’re a good football team. Arroyo, warts and all, is a good football team…with an excellent staff.

I need confirmation because I wasn’t there, but I’m being told Burroughs HC Keith Knoop got pass happy in the fourth quarter. Is this true?

Round One is in the books and both Almont teams are still alive….

Props to Crescenta Valley HC Paul Schilling not only for the job he’s done the last two years, but the onside kick he called successfully in the first quarter against La Mirada.

Just like that Azusa gets another crack at San Dimas…General belief is the Saints were underwhelming against San Marino Thursday night.

I am not going to watch LSU-Alabama if they play in the BCS final…anyone want to join me?

If you’re a family searching for a private school your 6’5” 310 pound son can attend, I think Pete Karavedas could arrange a nice tour for you.

Help me, help you!

8

Fanview Heavy appears every Saturday during football season.

Contact Joe at joe@midvalleysports.com

Good Afternoon!
