(Jackie Robinson Field, Brookside Park – Pasadena CA) – St Francis\u00a0 swept the season series\u00a0and prevailed in walkoff fashion Friday\u00a0against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, winning 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh\u00a0on David Olmedo-Barrera’s towering hit to the centerfield track.<\/p>\n
Tommy Scheper battled a full count to a walk to lead off SF in the\u00a0 bottom of the seventh\u00a0and was safely guided over to second\u00a0on a sacrifice bunt by Danny Porto, who batted in place of Pete Hofman.<\/p>\n
Anders Schraer was intentionally walked after a 2-1 count before P J\u00a0 DeZotell, with his knees down on the batter’s box, poke-bunted it up third. Notre\u00a0 Dame tried for a force out at third\u00a0but just missed as Scheper slid on-bag safely a\u00a0blink before the third baseman\u00a0got the ball in his glove. Lo and\u00a0 behold, SF now had the bases loaded with one, and Cal State\u00a0 Fullerton-bound Olmedo-Barrera up to bat.<\/p>\n
Olmedo-Barrera got\u00a0 himself a comfortable 2-1 count and blasted it to the center field\u00a0 warning track well out of the outfielder’s reach to end it all and\u00a0 walkoff St Francis to victory. He finished 3 for 3 at bat with a run,\u00a0 walk, and leadoff triple in the first.<\/p>\n
Will Larkin earned the\u00a0 victory in gutsy fashion, carrying a shutout into the seventh\u00a0with two\u00a0outs\u00a0 before Payton Milone pelted a game tying RBI double for the Notre Dame\u00a0Knights. Larkin’s grit was put to the test often, drawing full counts on six ND batters, but he won all those battles, getting two\u00a0pop-ups, a long flyout\u00a0 to left, one of a handful of great\u00a0plays from third\u00a0by Tei Vanderford, and two swinging strikeouts.<\/p>\n
Jake Hirobayashi, a freshman who started and finished for Notre Dame on the mound versus Larkin, took the loss in another outstanding effort as he recorded either the minimum three\u00a0or retired\u00a0 the side in four separate innings. He issued two\u00a0runs, six\u00a0hits, six\u00a0strikeouts, and a pair of\u00a0walks.<\/p>\n
The Golden Knights, guided by head coach Aaron Milam\u00a0for the sixth\u00a0game this season, are 4-2 under his stewardship after\u00a0 starting the season 1-4 under former head coach Brian Esquival. They\u00a0have mproved to 2-2 in one of the toughest conferences in Southern\u00a0 California – the Mission league – and are 5-6 overall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
