(Montebello) –\u00a0Schurr is\u00a0looking to rebound from a 3-7\u00a02011\u00a0season in which they missed the playoffs.\u00a0And the Spartans will\u00a0be doing it with a new head coach.\u00a0Marco Ramirez isn’t new to the\u00a0program after spending the\u00a0last several years on the Spartan staff.\u00a0But he is new as the head man replacing the retired Ben Negrete.<\/p>\n

Rudy Madrid has a “slight” edge at quarterback<\/p><\/div>\n

“I think we lost a little bit of our swagger last year. That wasn’t what Schurr football is all about,” Ramirez said.\u00a0“This year we have\u00a0more experience\u00a0and we’re trying to get that back. we’ve\u00a0been working hard.”<\/p>\n

A couple of the Spartan Big Boys<\/p><\/div>\n

The Spartans haven’t completely settled on a quarterback. Sal Chavez and Rudy Madrid are both in the mix. Madrid, who started several games last year,\u00a0has a slight edge.<\/p>\n

“Real slight. It’s pretty close right now,” Ramirez said.<\/p>\n

The Spartans like their running backs<\/p><\/div>\n

Abel Troncozo\u00a0and Eric Perez will\u00a0line up at running back with Troncozo expected to get the bulk of the work. Outside\u00a0Ramirez feels they have some good targets in Aaron Handy and\u00a0Ricky Fonseca. Fonseca could be in the verge of a breakout year.<\/p>\n

They have some size<\/p><\/div>\n

Up front Jose Gutierrez,\u00a0David Garcia and\u00a0Gilbert Montien will be the bubbas opening holes for Troncozo and Perez.<\/p>\n

Southpaw Sal Chavez is in the quarterback mix<\/p><\/div>\n

The Spartans\u00a0have always been known as a defensive\u00a0minded program. This year the Spartans will be counting on linebackers Jonathan Enriquez and Ivan Lezama to lead the way. Willie Retana will anchor the D-line\u00a0and Jose Aguero will lend support in the secondary at cornerback.<\/p>\n
