Covina Quarterback Darren Torres<\/p><\/div>\n

(Covina District Field) – “We look a lot better now than we did in the spring. That’s for sure,” said first year Covina Coach Joe Brown.\u00a0The Colts are coming off\u00a0of a season in\u00a0which they reached the semi finals but have since been\u00a0hit hard…really hard, by graduation.<\/p>\n

“Yeah that team last year was special. They all were seniors at the same time. We have only one starter back on defense,”\u00a0Brown said,<\/p>\n

The Big Boys taking a break<\/p><\/div>\n

Although they are\u00a0not the name players that stepped on the field last year, Covina\u00a0isn’t completley void of talent. Darren Torres, who has been the kicker for\u00a0Covina the last couple of years, is now in a\u00a0battle for quarterback with Emilio Zertuche.<\/p>\n

It all gets under way “for keeps” next week<\/p><\/div>\n

“Tonight\u00a0will go a long way in deciding on the starter. We’ll go back\u00a0and watch some film,”\u00a0Brown said.<\/p>\n

South Hills QB Adam Goss and first year HC Albert Rodriguez<\/p><\/div>\n

Both players saw time\u00a0in the scrimmage\u00a0Friday night against South Hills. Evan Stretton, who started last year is back at wide receiver along with\u00a0David Gonzalez. Frankie Ramirez will be the feature back. Justin Turner, Elia Sema\u00a0and Albert Naranjo will be the guys along the\u00a0front lines.<\/p>\n

Naranjo played last season with a hole in his heart…literally. He\u00a0had heart surgery and thought that he would never play football\u00a0again. But has has fully recovered\u00a0and\u00a0is now a living breathing miracle\u00a0and starting for the Colts.<\/p>\n

Ready to rock<\/p><\/div>\n

“It’s quite a story,” Brown said. “Unbelievable.”<\/p>\n

Defensively Covina is led by\u00a0Turner, who will play on both sides of the ball and\u00a0A.J. Oserio.<\/p>\n

Covina opens the season\u00a0with West Covina next Friday night\u00a0in\u00a0 game that is going to be televised by Fox.\u00a0“At first I was thinking oh no, not in my first game as coach. But then I started thinking\u00a0the kids are excited about it so it’s good,” said Brown.<\/p>\n

Covina then faces\u00a0La Puente, El Monte ,Walnut and then Northview to start\u00a0Valle Vista League play.<\/p>\n

As for South Hills, quarterback Adam Goss looked good and the\u00a0skill players made some plays but when you compete in a league with the likes of Charter Oak,\u00a0Chino Hills, Damien and Ayala, it makes it tough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
