\n(Monrovia) –\u00a0Mason Bryant racked up 111 yards receiving\u00a0and a touchdown,\u00a0intercepted a pass and returned it\u00a035 yards for a touchdown and for good meausre booted a 35 yard field goal to spark\u00a0Monrovia\u00a0a 52-17 win over Arcadia Friday night.“Mason is a great player,” said Monrovia Coach Ryan Maddox. “He came up big or us at receiver. He had a great game and he’s a great all around athlete.”<\/p>\n
Early on\u00a0Monrovia and Arcadia had trouble moving the ball offensively. Monrovia did move the ball on the ground however on its\u00a0first possession Ge’Vontray Ainsworth started the Wildcats opening series with a 16 yard run. But no points were scored on the drive.<\/p>\n
But if the Wildcat offense can’t score points, the defense will. Linebacker Rafael Garcia Jr. picked off\u00a0then quarterback Jake Medel and ran it back for the Wildcats’ first score.
\nThe pick six was the first of five INTs that the defense forced and the first of two INT scores for six.<\/p>\n
Maddox explained his defensive strategy this way. “We put some pressure on them and we asked our kids to play a lot of man coverage and forced them into mistakes.”
\nArcadia did have its\u00a0chances to score but but both Medel and Zach Yee could not connect with wideout Darius Elliot who at times was wide open.<\/p>\n
“We came ready to play but missed opportunities deep,” said Arcadia head coach Chris Long.<\/p>\n
Arcadia missed out on big plays on offense and also shot themselves in the foot on defense.<\/p>\n
The young secondary and inexperience of the Apaches were called for two pass interference penalties. One was on fourth down in Arcadia territory and the other was in Monrovia’s endzone.<\/p>\n
The loss puts the Apaches at 0-3 but coach Long is not worried about his young team.<\/p>\n
“We have a lot of first year players this year,” said Long. “We are getting better as a team. But we still need to put together four quarters.”
\nFor Monrovia, the win put the Wildcat’s at 1-1 going into next weeks game against San Dimas.<\/p>\n
“It’s great to get the first win,” said Maddox “But we still got a lot of things to fix. Just have to get better from here on out.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
