A tight battle was settled when Golden Eagles’ quarterback, Justin Posthuma, called his number and ran to the end zone for the 18-yard score.

Posthuma led the offense throwing 6 for 17, 111 passing yards and one touchdown.

St. Francis got on the board in the first quarter, capitalizing on Crescenta’s second turnover inside its own 24-yard line. St. Francis’ running back, Christopher Cabrera, finished the drive with a 3-yard rushing touchdown.

Late in the second quarter CV drove from its 20 to the St. Francis 13-yard line, where Falcon quarterback Kyle Cota found an open receiver in the back of the end zone for the 7-7 tie.

With the momentum, Crescenta went ahead in their first drive of the third quarter as Harry Pessy got free for a 53-yard touchdown to put the Falcons ahead, 14-7.

St. Francis responded on its ensuing possession starting with Ryan Jenkins’ kick-off return to the Falcon 47-yard line. From there, running back Dietrich Riley finished the drive with a 14-yard touchdown run after switching the point of attack and finding open space. However, Crescenta retained the lead after St. Francis missed their extra point attempt.

Riley again took control with a 27-yard punt return a 12-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Golden Eagles the lead 21-14 after a successful 2-point conversion. The Falcons received a golden opportunity as Riley was stripped of the ball at their 36-yard line and moments later Pessy found the end zone with an 8-yard touchdown through the middle and tying the game 21-21.

The Falcons hurt themselves with a questionable onside kick which St. Francis recovered at its own 48-yard line, giving them great field position. Thereafter, Posthuma showed why he’s the leader, rushing three times including the 17-yard go ahead touchdown, giving the Golden Eagles the final 28-21 lead.

By Juan Carlos Salas (La Cañada) – A quarterback-keeper touchdown is what St. Francis needed to put away Crescenta Valley, 28-21, Friday night.
