Both teams entered this game with a 2-1 league record.

Alhambra scored first on a 30-yard field goal by senior kicker Jessie Campos. This score came at the 6:46 mark of the opening period.

Montebello got on the board in the second quarter, with a field goal of its own…a 20 yard shot, off the foot of senior Marcus Portillo with 7:59 remaining in the half.

The teams remained deadlocked until Alhambra defensive back Arwendo Tendean recovered an Oilers’ fumble, and returned it 63-yards for a touchdown with 1:43 to play in the first half. The PAT was partially blocked. This gave the Moors a 9-3 halftime lead.

The score stayed the same until late in the fourth quarter when Montebello quarterback Matthew Saenz connected with wide out Gilbert Herrera for a 33-yard score. The PAT by Portillo was good, giving the Oilers their first lead of the contest, 10-9.

The Moors had one final opportunity to win the game. However, two penalties and a sack of quarterback Armando Amaya on their last series proved to be an insurmountable obstacle.

Although scoring proved to be at a premium, there was a noteworthy performance at the hands, or feet, of Alhambra running back Erza Broadus. This talented senior ran for 226 yards on 36 carries.

Next week, the Moors will host the San Gabriel Matadors, while the Oilers will travel to Schurr to take on the Spartans. Kickoff for these contests is scheduled for 7:00PM.

By Rich Whittington (Alhambra)- The Montebello Oilers came from behind to beat the Alhambra Moors, 10-9, Friday evening at Moor Field, but it wasn’t easy.

[12816

post-28809","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-hsfootball
["GET
