Since player of the year is based on numbers and performance there was a month long argument among the staff. Bitter enough for us to miss yesterday’s deadline.

In the end Norwalk’s Rashaad Penny emerged with his 37 touchdowns. During the course of 11 games (the Lancers made it to the second round but lost a game on the schedule when Cerritos folded its tent) and 1,872 gained on the ground Penny crossed the goal line 30 times.

He was the team’s leading receiver out of the double-wing offense, catching 12 for 383 yards and seven touchdowns. He punted, recorded 21 tackles, two interceptions, and recovered a fumble.

Penny did this as a junior, as a sophomore he scored 13 touchdowns, and now has 50 career visits to paydirt. With much of the Lancers offensive line returning to an offense that continues to baffle opponents its not unreasonable to expect even more in 2013.

***

Northwest Newcomer of the Year: Nordhoff’s Taylor Livingston

Southeast Newcomer of the Year: Downey’s Justin Huff

Mid-Valley Newcomer of the Year: Sierra Canyon’s Isaiah Renfro

Northwest DC of the Year: Nordhoff’s Cliff Farrar

Southeast DC of the Year: La Serna’s Margarito Beltran

Mid-Valley DC of the Year: Northview’s Marcel Perez

Northwest OC of the Year: La Salle’s Russell Gordon

Southeast OC of the Year: Norwalk’s Jessie Ceniceros

Mid-Valley OC of the Year: El Monte’s Brian Tabatabai

Northwest Coach of the Year: North Torrance’s Todd Croce

Southeast Coach of the Year: Downey’s Jack Williams

Mid-Valley Coach of the Year: Monrovia’s Ryan Maddox

Northwest Player of the Year: North Torrance’s Jorge Hernandez

Southeast Player of the Year: Norwalk’s Rashaad Penny

***

Other release Dates:

Mid-Valley Player of the Year—January 9

Northwest Most Valuable Player—January 10

Southeast Most Valuable Player—January 11

Mid-Valley Most Valuable Player—January 12

All Northwest Team—January 13

All Southeast Team—January 14

All Mid-Valley Team—January 15

In retrospect maybe this selection shouldn’t have been tough, but it was.
