This guy likes New England in the Super Bowl…what?<\/p><\/div>\n

Schurr lost DC Geoff Ackerman to Bell Gardens but the off season is going along well for the Spartans and second year Coach Marco Ramirez. They’re in the weight room and looking forward to next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’ve been going at it since December. Everything is going well. We’re trying to make sure all these kids do their job in the classroom as well,\u201d Ramirez said.<\/p>\n

Lefty Sal Chavez returns at quarterback but the Spartans are developing a younger player to back him up as well. Victor Salazar will return as OC. As for the DC?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don’t know yet. We’re trying to work on that this coming week,\u201d Ramirez added.<\/p>\n

Schurr side note: Football is king of course but there was some other news out of the Schurr athletic program this week. The Spartan wrestling team won their fifth staight Almont League title. Five straight titles in anything is nothing to sneeze at. On the softball front, three girls have signed at the next level. Emily Sanchez signed with the University of Delaware and Jackie Zachariah and Cynthia Martinez inked with La Sierra University in Riverside.<\/p>\n

I don’t where Jude Oliva will end up \u2013 Maranatha? Muir? St. Paul?- but where ever it is expect San Gabriel assistant Matt Lopez to go with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s the plan for now,\u201d Lopez said.<\/p>\n

That leaves San Gabriel minus two coaches and as of right now they are still searching. We’ve heard names, Derwin Henderson, Jerry Chow, but they are just beginning the interview process.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have 15 applicants right now. I think they should have somebody in there within the next two weeks,\u201d said a source familiar with the program.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five of the applicants are from out of state but right now there is no front runner.<\/p>\n

Ackerman is jumping right into his new head coaching position. He has contacted\u00a0 Arroyo HC Jim Singiser about Bell Gardens participating in a couple of 4-way passing tournaments as well as the annual SGV Shootout at Arroyo.<\/p>\n

The busy recruiting week continues at La Mirada. Iowa State has offered class of 2014 players WR Dallas Todd (formerly Dallas Shipp) and TE\/LB Tyler Luatua. Todd received an offer from Ohio State earlier this week.<\/p>\n

Word on the street is that former BG HC David Ramos’ coaching days aren’t over. He could end up on another staff as early as this year.<\/p>\n

Former Alhambra HC Gil Ruedaflores is happy in retirement. \u201cI’ve wondered what’s going on with all these young coaches stepping down. I’d jump back in the game in a heartbeat but my famly is more important,\u201d Ruedaflores said. \u201cAfter 42 years of them sacrificing for me, it’s time I do that for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Covina HC\u00a0Darryl Thomas feels the same way. “Yeah I’m keeping busy. I’m watching my kids play basketball,” he said.<\/p>\n

Pasadena? Ken Howard?<\/p>\n

Gladstone? It’s apparently a tough sell. Albert Sanchez tried to step down a few years ago and had to return when nobody took the job.\u00a0There are coaches out there though. Steve Bogan?\u00a0David Ramos?\u00a0Eric Escamilla?\u00a0Tip Sanders? Leon Ward? Rick Neuheisel?<\/p>\n
