Taylor Legace is proving to be one of the top players in the area. Glendale doesn’t seem to have the same fire as it had last year- although the Nitros did hold on to beat South Pas last week. Arcadia starts off league on the right foot.

Arcadia 28 Glendale 14

Diamond Ranch (1-3) at Glendora (1-2)

Glendora is actually a break for the Panthers. DR plays a schedule that is second only to USC. With Bishop Amat next week and league play to follow, the Panthers want a win to get some momentum going. They should get it here.

Diamond Ranch 24 Glendora 10

Rowland (3-0) at Covina (1-2) – Covina District Field

Last Year: Rowland 42-21

Rowland is a surprising 3-0 or is it a surprise? Michael Ball is playing well but we expected that. He’s getting plenty of help from Josh Onvughe and Steven David. Covina played Walnut tough before falling by just four points.

The Colts will give Rowland a battle as well but in the end the Raiders will prevail.

Rowland 21 Covina 17

Friday October 2

Temple City (0-2-1) at Rosemead (1-2)

Last Year: Rosemead 45-14

All-Time: Temple City 11-5

Temple City will get a victory. We’re just not sure when. You have to like the hard nosed play of Max Ruckle, Justin Sutton and quarterback Justin Smith. I keep saying this week after week but the Rams could be 3-0 with a break here or there.

Rosemead has been bitten by the injury bug. Joey Diaz and Luis Diaz are both out and reports are that they could be on the shelf for a long time. Joey Diaz is the heart of the offense and without him it’s going to be a rough go.

Temple City finally gets its first.

Temple City 20 Rosemead 17

South Pasadena (0-3) at Alhambra (2-1) – Moor Field

Last Year: Alhambra 43-14

2007: Alhambra 35-3

The Moors have dominated this game the last few years and there’s no reason to believe they won’t again. South Pas is still on the outside of the win column looking in and last week the Tigers fell to Hoover.

 Yeah, Hoover. Alhambra wins big.

Alhambra 35 South Pasadena 6

Northview (0-3) at South Hills (1-2) – Covina District Field

Last Year: South Hills 27-14

The records are similar but the teams aren’t. South Hills’ losses have come at the hands of La Habra and Tesoro. The Vikes have fallen to quality opponents as well but they are not in the same league as those two. Northview has lost by an average of 24 points per game.

South Hills gets back to its traditional winning ways. The Huskies should win big.

South Hills 34 Northview 7

La Salle (3-1) at Monrovia (4-0)

Last Year: Monrovia 52-7

All-Time: Even 2-2

La Salle has surprised M-Town before. Three years ago, the Lancers stunned the Wildcats in the playoffs after Monrovia beat them big in the regular season. Two years ago they stunned them again the regular season.

That won’t happen this year. Monrovia is too big and too bad. An abundance of running backs, an elusive quarterback and a stout defense have led the Cats to a 4-0 record. Nobody has come close to stopping Nick Bueno. Make that 5-0.

 Monrovia 38 La Salle 17

California (1-2) at Schurr (2-1)

Last Year: California 14-7

Schurr was devastating last week against a previously undefeated Wilson team. Chris Chairmonte, Nick Castillo, and Aaron Cantu were in complete control. Why is it the Spartans always get overlooked?

Cal has lost twice but Rowland and La Mirada can’t be classified as chumps. Last week the Condors bounced back to beat Pacifica. Close game but Schurr gets it done.

Schurr 24 California 21

Muir (0-3) at Burroughs (1-2)

Last Year: Muir 13-10

2007: Muir 33-3

It’s not often you see Muir at 0-3. But that tends to happen when Oaks Christian, Diamond Ranch and Venice are your opponents. Of course if you talk to Ken Howard it’s all about getting ready for league play. It’s finally arrived this week in the form of Burroughs.

Burroughs hasn’t been feasting on cupcakes either falling to the likes of St. Francis and Schurr. Last year was only a three point game. This one could go down to the wire again. The Mustangs win their first.

Muir 23 Burroughs 20

Arroyo (2-1) at Walnut (3-0)

Last Year: Walnut 14-10

Good early season match up. Both teams are on track to have big seasons. The Mustangs are undefeated while the Knights slipped once – last week against Claremont.

It’s the running attack of Milan King and Leonard Rhodes vs. the passing game of Steven Rivera and Chris Rodriguez. I’ll go with the Knights. They should be able to air it out enough to hold off Walnut.

The defense needs to step up to shut down Rhodes and King. They might stack the front line.

Arroyo 20 Walnut 17

Baldwin Park (3-1) at El Monte (0-3)

Last Year: Baldwin Park 10-0

Baldwin Park 5-3

Baldwin Park might be the best team in the Valle Vista. El Monte is struggling right now. Quang Phong was out last week for the Lions but the backup Manuel Santa Cruz filed in admirably.

The Lions will need him and a lot more to hold off the Braves. BP is looking to get back on track after a loss last week to Bonita.
