(San Gabriel) – San Gabriel\u00a0named J.D. Thompson\u00a0as its new head coach\u00a0on Friday. Thompson was the offensive coordinator\u00a0at Woodrow Wilson (Long Beach) last season and also spent several years at\u00a0Corona Centennial previously.<\/p>\n

Thompson graduated from Corona Centennial in 1994 where he played\u00a0wide receiver and\u00a0running back.\u00a0\u00a0He\u00a0has spent many seasons on both sides of the ball as a player and a coach.<\/p>\n
“I’ve been\u00a0coaching for the least\u00a016 years and have coordinated on offense and defense.\u00a0I’d consider myself\u00a0an offensive guy but\u00a0I’ve done both,” Thompson said. “Let’s just say I’m a Corona Centennial guy\u00a0which we means you can expect us to play fast and up tempo.”<\/p>\n
This is Thompson’s first stint as a head coach.<\/p>\n
“I’m excited.\u00a0I haven’t slept too well the last couple of nights,” Thompson said.\u00a0“I’m thinking we’re already behind\u00a0and my mind’s just been racing\u00a0thinking about all of the things I need to\u00a0do. I’ve already\u00a0started sending letters out to all of the parents.”<\/p>\n
Thompson’s roots are in\u00a0Corona but he is familiar with the area.<\/p>\n
“I have a friends\u00a0in the area. I know people that live just a couple of blocks\u00a0away.\u00a0I’m famliar with what\u00a0Jude (Oliva)\u00a0has done here and the\u00a0success that he has had with the offense,” Thompson said.\u00a0“The fact that San Gabriel made it to the championship game\u00a0just a couple of years ago – that’s exciting.\u00a0These are good kids here.\u00a0Tough kids.”<\/p>\n
Thompson takes over for Jude Oliva who\u00a0resigned last month. The Matadors are coming off a 3-7 season (2-3 in the Almont League) and missed the playoffs.<\/p>\n
