Rosemead point guard Sydney Hua<\/p><\/div>\n

(Rosemead) – Rosemead\u00a0ran off the first 13 points of the game\u00a0to deliver an\u00a0early knockout punch and cruise\u00a0to an\u00a0easy 51-26 rout of Nogales Thursday night\u00a0to advance to the second round of the CIF playoffs.<\/p>\n

Nogales didn’t score a point until there was 1:37 left in the first quarter and trailed 15-2 after one.\u00a0It didn’t get much better in the\u00a0second as the Lady Panther defense limited Nogales to\u00a0six in the quarter for a\u00a025-8 halftime advantage.\u00a0Rosemead came out in a trap defense that confused the Lady Nobles and resulted in the big early\u00a0advantage for the Lady Panthers.<\/p>\n

“We wanted to do that right off the bat – keep them in front of us and basically\u00a0limit their shots,”\u00a0said Rosemead Coach Jay Gauthier. “If they do get past it\u00a0it gives them less time to set something up.”<\/p>\n

Sarah Regan\u00a0scored the first seven points of the game for\u00a0Rosemead and had\u00a010 in the first half.<\/p>\n

Nogales\u00a0finally managed a double digit quarter in the third with\u00a012 but the Lady Nobles were still down by 16 after three.<\/p>\n

Sydney Hua got it going for the Lady Panthers in the third quarter with\u00a0nine points and added another six in the fourth\u00a0including four for four from the line. Hua led all scorers with 19.\u00a0She carried the Rosemead offense in the second half\u00a0with Melody Gauthier\u00a0injuring her finger.<\/p>\n

“Melody got hurt in the first half. We’re hoping it’s just dislocated but we’re not sure,”\u00a0Gauthier said. “She was out there mainly as a decoy\u00a0so that kind of slowed it down a little bit.\u00a0But Syd took over and\u00a0made some great plays like she is capable of doing.”<\/p>\n

Hua and the Lady Panthers outscored Nogales 15-6 in the final frame to put\u00a0it away.<\/p>\n

Gauther scored nine\u00a0and Regan finished with 10, all in the first half.<\/p>\n

For Nogales, Ashley Redmon led the way with 15.<\/p>\n

Rosemead now advances to the\u00a0second round Saturday night.<\/p>\n
