It probably wasn’t what Schurr wanted but when you’re down 13-0 in the fourth a tie doesn’t look too bad.

Aaron Cantu and Nick Castillo should amp it up this week against Whittier. Look for the team that showed up the week before against Wilson. Schurr wins big.

Schurr 28 Whittier 10

Friday October 10

Azusa (4-1) at La Puente (4-1)

Last Year: Azusa 47-17

2007: La Puente 24-13

A nice early matchup between possibly the Montview league’s top two contenders. Azusa and LP won their league openers with ease taking care of Bassett and Duarte respectively. Azusa might have the edge offensively with quarterback John Chavez but the Warriors can score too with Garrett Hrey leading the way.

Whoever plays the best defense wins. I think it will be the Warriors who have allowed an average of only eight points per game.

La Puente 20 Azusa 16

Arroyo Travels to La Canada

Muir (0-4) at Burbank (3-1) Burroughs H.S.

Last Year: Muir 47-7

It’s been a struggle for Muir early but when you play the schedule the Mustangs have that should be expected. Muir is coming off a tough three point loss to Burroughs while Burbank easily handled Crescenta Valley.

Quarterback Adam Colman is having a big year for Burbank throwing for over 600 yards already but can he do it against a quick Muir secondary? Muir is led by Jarron Williams and Eddie Tripp.

Muir finally breaks into the win column holding off Burbank in the fourth.

Muir 17 Burbank 13

Pasadena (2-2) at Arcadia (1-2-1)

Last Year: Arcadia 31-27

Both teams opened Pacific League play with victories. Pasadena held off Hoover 21-13 while the Apaches took care of Glendale 34-16. Arcadia’s offense seems to be getting on track- the Apaches have scored 62 points in their last two games.

Sophomore Myles Carr replaced the injured Garrett Tuck against Glendale and threw for over 200 yards and Taylor Legace had over 100 yards receiving and a pair of scores. The running attack with Rodney Arnett and Everett Frazier is strong as well.

Pasadena might have trouble holding down the Arcadia offense. The Bulldogs need to avoid falling behind early. Arcadia gets the W.

Arcadia 31 Pasadena 17

Arroyo (2-2) at La Canada (2-1)

Last Year: La Canada 28-0

All-Time: La Canada 1-0

Rocky Moore has been putting up big numbers for the surprising Spartans who have won two of their first three. Their only loss was a three point game to Crescenta Valley.

Arroyo is suddenly in the midst of a two game losing streak after opening the season with two wins.

The Knights’ offense should be fine with Steven Rivera, Mike Vasquez, Chris Rodriguez and company. It could turn into a shootout. Arroyo holds off Spartans late.

Arroyo 30 La Canada 27

Bonita (1-3) at San Dimas (3-1) Smudge Pot

Last Year: San Dimas 50-33

The Saints have a plenty of weapons offensively in Shawn Kennedy, Ryan Kohler and Tre Evans. The problem is making the defensive stops.

The Bearcats only win was a defensive struggle against Baldwin Park. But they gave up 43 to Santa Fe and 31 to Claremont so they’ve had their problems as well.

San Dimas hung a 50 on Bonita last year. The Saints won’t get that much but they will put up some points. San Dimas takes the Smudge Pot.

San Dimas 35 Bonita 21

El Monte (0-4) at Rowland (4-0)

Common Opponents: Covina 13 El Monte 0, Rowland 48 Covina 12

Michael Ball, Josh Onovughe, Leonardo Freeman, Ervin Crawford….the Raiders can beat you in so many different ways. Last Thursday night in matter of minutes, Covina was down by four touchdowns.

El Monte is still trying to get off the floor. The Lions are coming off a 35-14 pasting at the hands of Baldwin Park. They’re still in search of that elusive first victory.

Rowland rolls to its fifth straight.

Rowland 42 El Monte 10

La Salle (3-2) at Temple City (1-2-1)

Last Year: Temple City 28-17

All-Time: Temple City 3-1

The Rams finally got their first win last week in a 27-13 cross town win over Rosemead. It wasn’t their usually style as Max Ruckle was held to under 40 yards rushing. But quarterback Justin Smith, and receivers Andrew Torres and David Spratt came up big for TC.

La Salle was slammed last week against another Rio Hondo league team – Monrovia. The Lancer defense couldn’t find a way to stop the Cats. They’ll need big games from Michael Novell and Carlos Morales to keep them in the game.

San Marino, another Rio Hondo league contender beat La Salle 35-13 in week two. Rams will be the third Rio team to knock out La Salle.

Temple City 27 La Salle 14

San Marino (4-0) at San Gabriel (2-2)

Last Year: San Marino 29-17

All-Time: San Marino 29-11-2

The knock against the Titans is that they haven’t played anybody. The likes of Gabrielino, Hoover and Cantwell just don’t seem to strike fear into the hearts of their opponents. But the fact is that San Marino has done exactly what it needed to do – beat them and beat them handily.

San Gabriel is playing .500 ball but its two losses have been to quality foes in Cathedral and Burbank. The Matadors offense isn’t clicking like they would like it to but it’s coming around.

It’s a tough game to call. Last year the Titans were undefeated and took care of business at home. I think the Matadors will do the same.

San Gabriel 21 San Marino 17

Rosemead (1-3) at South Hills (2-2) Covina District Field

Last Year: South Hills 14-10

2003: South Hills 27-21

This was a good game last year. South Hills was well…South Hills and Rosemead was on its way to becoming a CIF Finalist. Things have changed in a year. The Panthers lost a ton of seniors to graduation. While guys such as Tra Sumler and Angel Alejandre were taking the walk in June, South Hills had players like Miles Bevel, Geoffrey Vaughns and Ify Umodu all returning.

The Huskies took out the frustrations of two early season losses on Northview last week in a 62-0 rout. I don’t see it being that bad but South Hills will win…and win big.

South Hills 45 Rosemead 7

Other Games:

Thursday October 8

Hoover (1-3) at Burroughs (2-2)

Last Year: Burroughs 76-20

Burroughs in a rout

El Rancho (3-1) at St. Francis (4-0)

Last Year: St. Francis 45-7

St. Frank’s performs an encore

Friday October 9

Sierra Vista (2-2) at Duarte (0-5)

Last Year: Duarte 55-39

Since 2002: Duarte 4-3

It’s the Dons’ turn to go dancing

Workman (3-1) at Bassett (3-2)

Last Year: Workman 26-14

Workman starts off league right

Crescenta Valley (2-2) at Glendale (1-3)

Last Year: Crescenta Valley 21-13

CV gets the W

Covina (1-3) at Wilson (3-1)

Covina in a close call

Los Altos (1-3) at La Serna (1-3) California H.S.

Last Year: La Serna 21-6

La Serna by a touchdown

West Covina (2-3) at Diamond Bar (0-4)

Last Year: West Covina 35-25

The WC moves to .500

Saturday October 10

Bishop Amat (4-0) at Diamond Ranch (1-4)

Last Year: Bishop Amat 17-6

Amat prevails again as DR falls to 1-5.
