1.) Recent History. The Spartans have the most recent CIF title to their credit. Last time Arroyo won a title Peterson was still hanging out by the wash with Jeff Spicoli.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n1.) Nathan Coto. The kid can play. He’s now into his second year of the post Steven Rivera era and he’s making a huge impact. For the second straight year he has guided the Knights into the second round of the playoffs. He’s thrown for over 2900 yards and 32 touchdowns and rushed for 393 yards and five scores. While Knight fans were dreading the day Rivera graduated, Coto has them happy while carving out his own little place in Arroyo history.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
2.) \u201cShut up and smack.\u201d A phrase coined by former Spartan running back and linebacker Abraham Gonzalez. Sums up pretty well the Spartan defensive scheme.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n2.) Randy Amezcua. It’s not all air all the time for Arroyo. They have a running game too. Randy Amezcua has been consistent all year for the Knights with 1066 yards and 18 touchdowns. They can grind if they have to.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
3.) More to prove. Arroyo has been at the top of the Mid Valley polls for most of the year while Schurr was at the bottom. Spartans aim to show polls don’t mean all that much.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n3.) James \u201cWolf\u201d Markoya: Have you seen this guy? He’s at every game. Heck I think he’s at every practice. With his full beard, big smile and Arroyo gear, the Knights biggest fan is always a constant at B.L. Bergstrom Stadium. With a fan like this how can the Knights go down?<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
4.) In 2006 two league champions played La Habra in the Division VII playoffs. Neither team was thought to have a chance. One didn’t to the tune of 55-0 while the other won and earned the Mid Valley staff new kicks…Provided by “His Arroyo Baldness”.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n4.) Arroyo has won ten straight. What’s one more? They competed with Los Altos, took care of Rosemead survived Baldwin Park and routed everybody else. They’re ready to step in to the semis.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
5.) If you can control the clock and play good defense, you will always have a chance and Schurr does both well.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n5.) Unlike previous Arroyo teams, the Knights are pretty big up front. Guys like Sergio Mardueno (5-7, 275) and Juan Hernandez (5-11, 280) anchor solid front offensive and defensive lines.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
6.) Spartans are never afraid to mix. Ask 1997 Schurr graduate and former WBC Light Middleweight and 2005 The Contender Champion Sergio Mora.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n6.) Schurr is solid, so is Baldwin Park. But there are no monsters named Monrovia or Paraclete waiting for Arroyo in this bracket. They wouldn’t have to face that beast until the Finals. Arroyo sees the opportunity and isn’t about to let it pass.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
7.) Post game meal choices. Lampost or Rio’s Pizza. Edge here has got to go to Rio’s.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n7.) This the 30th consecutive year Arroyo has made the playoffs. What better way to celebrate the milestone with a trip to the semi finals or beyond?<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
8.) No team has dropped a 50 burger on the Spartan defense all season. Not even Southeast powerhouse La Serna.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n8.) The Knights won the SGV Shootout in the summer. They are out to prove that they are a lot more than just passing league champions.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
9.) Arroyo has only played two teams all year with a positive rating on Calpreps while Schurr only played three with negative ratings.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n9.) Do you really think Arroyo (players and coaches alike) want to hear former Principal Jim Sefton sounding off after they lose. Just to avoid that they’ll get a victory.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
10.) Taco Mambo. Never heard of it? Friday night Arroyo players and fans will get their fill.<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n10.)Papa Singiser: All year Arroyo has been playing hard while remembering Papa Singiser, who passed away last December. There would be nothing better than for the Knights to advance to the semis with Papa Singiser looking down and smiling on his son and his team.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
