Arroyo’s Jose Valdivia hauled in two touchdown passes<\/p><\/div>\n

(Montebello) – Randy Amezcua\u00a0broke through the line and\u00a0raced to a 74 yard touchdown run\u00a0with 1:09 left in the game to\u00a0cap\u00a0off Arroyo’s\u00a028-14 win over Schurr and a trip to the CIF Mid Valley Division Semi Finals.<\/p>\n

Amezcua, who finished with\u00a0153 yards on 19 carries, was\u00a0only part of the story however.\u00a0The Arroyo defense\u00a0stood up\u00a0time after time\u00a0and forced a Schurr fumble late in the fourth to set up Amezcua’s gallop.<\/p>\n

The Knights’ defensive unit\u00a0forced Schurr into five turnovers, intercepting\u00a0quarterback Sal Chavez\u00a0three times and forcing a pair of fumbles.\u00a0The Spartans two scores came\u00a0the unconventional way. One came on a\u00a0fake punt\u00a061-yard run by\u00a0Noah Quintero\u00a0and the other was set up in the fourth quarter when Arroyo muffed a punt on its own 17 yard line.<\/p>\n

***Trailing 21-7, Schurr\u00a0capitalized when Arroyo dropped the punt\u00a0and took over at the 17. Four plays later,\u00a0Eric Perez scored on a nine-yard sweep around left side to cut the lead to 21-14.<\/p>\n

***The\u00a0Spartans had a shot to tie\u00a0after stopping Arroyo\u00a0and regaining possession. But a\u00a0fumble at the\u00a0Knight 21 ended the threat and Amezcua iced it on the following possession.<\/p>\n

***Jacob Salmon,\u00a0Sonny Gonzalez and Jose Valdivia all had picks for the Knights to go along with two fumble recoveries.<\/p>\n

***Valdivia\u00a0caught a\u00a023-yard pass from Nathan Coto\u00a0to give Arroyo a 6-0 lead in the first. In the second he hauled in an eight-yard strike from Coto to extend the margin to\u00a013-0.<\/p>\n

***Valdivia\u00a0had seven receptions for\u00a069 yards and the two scores.<\/p>\n

***Coto completed 12 of 19 for 143 yards and two scores and also\u00a0rushed for 46 yards on\u00a0nine carries.<\/p>\n

***Down 13-0, Schurr surprised Arroyo in the second quarter\u00a0with a fake punt on fourth and six from its own 39. Quintero took the snap as the up back and outran the Arroyo secondary 61 yards for a touchdown and\u00a0Arroyo’s lead was\u00a013-7 at the half.<\/p>\n

***Abel Troncoza led the Spartans with 95 yards rushing on 16 carries while Quintero\u00a0finshed with\u00a0six carries for 69 yards.<\/p>\n

***Arroyo struck gold mid way though the third quarter when\u00a0Coto connected with Nico Lozano for a 50-yard touchdown to give the Knights a 21-7 lead.<\/p>\n

***”Nobody would have wanted our players\u00a0last year or at the beginning of this year.\u00a0Nobody would have wanted our quarterback. Nobody knew who he was.\u00a0But we kept playing and just kept winning. I’m proud to\u00a0be with a group that includes San Dimas, Paraclete and Monrovia. I’m happy that we are the one\u00a0MVL team that is represented in the semis,” said Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser.<\/p>\n

***This is the first time Arroyo has reached the\u00a0semi finals since\u00a02004.<\/p>\n

***Schurr offensive line: LT-Andrew Ortiz,\u00a0LG-Israel Lorenzo, C-\u00a0Adrian Diaz, RG-Daniel Rodriguez,\u00a0RT-Robert Melendez<\/p>\n
